I am looking to buy a tonne bag of top soil locally and have it delivered. Has anyone bought any recently? Where can I get the best quality at the best price please?

Seems to have gone up to £60 now but if you ask them to deliver it when they have a bulk delivery near you, they deliver it for free for you which was a nice change.

Got some delivered from our local builders merchants. Not dear. Was dead and smelt a bit funky but once you get some organic matter in there and get the fungi and bacteria working its turned out pretty decent. Needs time to start working proper like.

It’s often cheaper to buy it loose rather than in a bag. They’ll just tip it into a pile (put a tarpaulin down first. Also the more you buy the cheaper the price eg £60 for one tonne or £95 for 2.

There are also top soil calculations available online to determine how much you need.

I’ve been using Greenvale, you can just order from their website.

Delivery is good but comes with a charge, nornally order a bag of topsoil, a compost and a bag of bark all at the same time to make it worth it.

If your base soil is poor best put your new topsoil in raised beds. Then enrich it over-winter with well-matured farmyard manure and/or your own compost. I use scaffold netting to protect plants from birds, cabbage whites etc.

We sell top soil at Berrys in Leyland and can deliver pal
