Brothers in Arms

Post by karatekid » Mon May 26, 2025 4:49 pm

With the Ramsey brothers set to face each other on opposing teams next season how many other siblings have done the same professionally. I can think of the Neville bros. Everton and ManU.

Ron Futcher versus his twin brother Paul.

Burnley v Halifax. Approximately 1990?

I could also have just imagined this! 😬

There's been brothers play against each other for different countries, never mind different clubs.

Willie Irvine and Bobby Irvine both played for N.Ireland
Of course Willie played for the Clarets and his brother Bobby played for Stoke, but not sure if they ever played against each other..?

I'm sure some of our statistical fans will know if they did or not. Maybe Willie will answer this one 🤔

Bobby could also have been in goal for Stoke in both the League matches in December of that 65/66 season.

Just for the record they were both made captain for the night. Willie coming out on top by getting the winner.... I have it on good authority that he said words similar to 'cheers or thank you'

Not 100% certain that they ever played against each other, would be surprised if they didn’t:
The Clarke brothers Alan and Frank who were both playing top flight football in the late 60s early 70s
I seem to recall that there were 5 Clarke brothers and all played professional league football.

It is quite possible that Allan & Frank played against each other on a few occasions between 1970 - 73

Allan at Leeds, Frank at Ipswich, both clubs were in the old first division during that period.

Taken from John's Wikipedia page

Fashanu's footballing career began at Norwich City in 1979, and he turned professional two years later – just as his brother Justin was transferred to Nottingham Forest from the relegated Carrow Road club.
Norwich were promoted straight back to the First Division in 1981–82, but Fashanu managed just five league appearances and scored once. He managed two appearances in the 1982–83 First Division campaign – which would be his last for the club. He was never a regular player at Carrow Road.

Sorry, I don't think so.

They captained Burnley & Stoke in the 1965/66 League cup tie.

EDIT: I’ve just seen CTID’s reply confirming it.

Pretty sure Steve Caldwell played against his brother Gary (Wigan) when he was a Claret

Another ex-Claret Lee Howey must have played against his brother Steve at some point

And another - Leon Cort - played against Carl?

We had a lad called Joseph Mills about 15 years ago.

I think his brother Matt was on the bench for Bolton when we played them though.
