Just watched The Big Match Revisited, Leighton James missed a penalty away at Derby, got me thinking who has the best penalty record for Burnley? Have we had someone with 100% record?

Other than shoot outs I don't remember us missing many in recent years. Although we did go age without being awarded one.

I think our record is about 3/3 for our 9 seasons in the Premier League!

Peter Noble - was it 28 out of 28. He did miss one once but the referee ordered a retake.

We had six in 2016/17, all scored. Two each for Barnes, Gray & Vokes. Five of them were away too at Southampton, Arsenal, Swansea, Everton & Watford.

It happened at Hillsborough one year.

It was when Stan ran onto the pitch to stop the pitch invader from doing something worse than just running onto the pitch!

And Arfield v Palace.

Total pens in Prem

2009/10: 6 all scored
2014/15: 2 neither scored
2016/17 6 all scored
2017/18: none
2018/19: 2 both scored
2019/20: 3 all scored
2020/21: 3 all scored
2021/22: 2, 1 scored
2023/24: 3 all scored

So 24 scored out of 27

The longest we went without one was from Vokes scoring T Everton in 2016/17 (game 33) to Southampton in 2018/19 (game 25). That’s a total of 68 games.

Peter Noble - was it 28 out of 28. He did miss one once but the referee ordered a retake.

His penalty kick at Cricket Field End was saved by Middlesbrough’s Jim Platt who dived low to his left to save Noble’s kick. Ref ordered a retake due to encroachment by Boro player and Uve’s miss was expunged from the record.

In the early 1990’s I did a fundraising quiz with 100 questions and answers to be filled in on a sheet.

I included the question regarding Noble’s penalties and I had on my records that it was 28/28 but someone challenged me and showed an alternative written record showing 27/27.

After much soul searching and querying (pre Google days) I saw Peter in Churchills bar one Saturday night so decided to ask him
for the definitive answer. Peter came straight back at me and said he didn’t know the correct answer himself!

When I explained why I needed confirmation he just laughed and bollocked me because he was fed up of numerous people coming to his shop to ask him the question from my quiz sheet. 🤣

Dennis Tueart took 3 penalty kicks for Man City in 1976 at the Turf. First was saved, second scored but ordered to retake due to encroachment and third hit the post. Game finished 0-0.

Wasn't there a retake v Palace at home 83ish? Laws and McGee seems to ring a bell.....

There was (I think?) a retake V Palace at the Turf in the FA Cup around 83/84. We missed the original kick, but the ref controversially ordered a retake and we scored and won the game 1-0. Palace absolutely fuming! I'm thinking it might have been Steve Taylor with the pen, but not sure.
I well remember the City game which ended 0-0 with it's series of missed penalties.

Or possibly Leicester's expense so there'd have been no title for them the following season. Taylor's penalty was a bit of a sliding doors moment.

I've often thought about this since Alexander started taking them for us. And I will stand by this until someone says otherwise (as it is just a hunch). But I'd say our penalty record is up there with the very best over the last 16 years

In the championship we have missed 8 out of 65 pens (87.7% conversion rate)
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/burnley ... ata=GB2%26

We have missed only 3 in the premier league out of 28 penalties (89.3% conversion rate)
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/burnley ... ata=GB1%26

We have also won 8 out of 10 shootouts in our history

1982/83 FA Cup 5th Round Replay. You are correct about Steve Taylor. The original tie at Palace had finished 0-0 in a dreadful game which MOTD struggled to find any 'highlights' in. I went to Selhurst Park on a special train that day.

Peter Noble held the world record at one time for the most consecutive penalties scored.

In fact he was even an answer to a question on the 1st edition of Trivial Pursuit regarding this.

I used to often frequent Peter's shop in Burnley Market Hall and we had many natters over the years he had the shop and I happened to mention the Trivial Pursuit card, Peter didn't believe me, so next time I went to the market hall I gave Peter the card complete in a 360 perspex frame. This sat at the side of the till for a number of years
