Former Gloucestershire and England bowler Syd Lawrence has sadly passed away at the age of 61 following a battle with MND.

Sad news. His career was effectively ended by an injury suffered while bowling (broken kneecap?). I remember the noise being described by one of his teammates as like a gunshot.

Was reading an interview with him online somewhere only yesterday, didn't realise he was so close to the end. What a horrible illness, RIP.

Sad news indeed. RIP Syd.

Remember watching him at Old Trafford, never seen a wicket keeper and slip cordon stand so far back. He was rapid.

I wasn’t aware of his illness until recently when they had a fundraising day for MND at the England v West Indies game at Bristol.

It’s a horrible illness that I saw at a personal level with a good friend of mine.

I didn’t realise he was so close to the end either.

Another lost to the dreadful MND. I saw the same person Tony refers to lose his life to MND, so hard to see someone who had a larger than life personality slowly lose the battle against MND. RIP Syd

10th February 1992, last day of the 3rd Test v New Zealand at Wellington. A New Zealand TV cameraman intruded as he was being carried off and both Mickey Stewart and Ian Botham took exception and told him where to go in " anglo-saxon " terms ! He then said something about Lawrence, that so enraged his Gloucestershire team mate, the mild mannered Jack Russell, that he set off after him and had to be physically restrained from pursuing him ...
