The England U21s includes Harvey Elliot and Elliott Anderson and I was wondering if we could come up with a starting XI of footballers who were linked by stringing names together.

Here are the rules:

For example, David Edgar strings with Edgar Davids. Paul Robinson strings with Robinson Crusoe, but this falls down because Robinson Crusoe is a fictional character, not a professional footballer.

Obviously, the more famous the footballer, the better it is.

Don't pretend you know somebody called Tarkowski Robbie who plays for the Red Lion Reserves.

There'a a bit of stretch so that David Preece can string with Reece James.

If you can bend the rules imaginatively and humorously enough to get three 'likes' it's permissible.

Off the top of my head I've got string of five:

David Preece - Reece James - James (Jim) Leighton - Leighton James - James Trafford

It would be better if Traff or Jim Leighton was the start point with him being the goalkeeper. The Jameseses are doing a lot of heavy lifting here. It'd be better if we could get an XI without recycling a string.

How many names can we 'string' together like this?
Can we string a recognizable first XI of footballers?

One could bend the rules here and say that Alex is short for Alexander and therefore you could have an infinite loop.

I did a thread a while back on how many current players with double-barrelled surnames have another surname as their forename. Some of them could be useful.
