Looking for family member and want advice, please. Needs to be good for both roads and country/farm tracks. Presumably can only be 250 watts max? Ideally a budget model but don't want to buy rubbish. Thanks.

Have a look at oxygenbicycles.com - I'm no expert, but I have an S-Cross ST which handles farm tracks and rough paths, whilst allowing a pannier on top of rack at rear for a few tools and drink bottle etc. Also have a bag on cross bar for maps, mobile, binocs.

Love it - it gets me out and about on our country lanes whereas, if it was left to pure pedal-power, I probably wouldn't be able to! Go for largest capacity battery you can afford.

Have a look at icycle in clitheroe, they sell cheap second hand electric mtbs

They know their stuff so I would trust them to refurbish bikes properly.

They look interesting……. Technically not allowed on the roads, and can do 35mph, off road on cheap components - no thanks!

I'm still on old fashioned pedal power on a liw quality mountain bike, so can't offer any opinion. Just passing a link on.

Is there a difference between "technically not allowed on the roads" and "not allowed on the roads"?

I guess the difference is that the enforcement seems non-existent so they seem to have become de-facto allowed on the roads. I'd say at least 75% of the e-bikes I see on the road aren't UK road legal.

Obviously if you have an accident whilst riding one the repercussions can be more serious.

I'd say about 90% of bikes I see now when I'm out riding are e-bikes.

I was recently given an unused chinese, folding e-bike because my son has got to the point where I cant keep up with him around Towneley. I put this together a few years ago for a relative - so knew it was a piece of junk.

I was really apprehensive about anything other than tarmaced paths, convinced the thing was going to fall to pieces. However the electric assistance is amazing! No issue coming back up towards Pike Hill from Towneley. I wouldnt go off-roading properly with it but for simply riding - it has been fine and it fits in the car/garage easily.

I have a Carerra Crossfuse bike gives great pedal assistance on hills and is great ...
