Unsure about this tbh. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, but i would prefer a younger prospect to get the 3rd or 4th striker spot

Brilliant news and summed up perfectly by Bashley: "I’m not done yet and I’m here to challenge for a place in the squad, as well as helping everyone out and being in that environment around the changing room."

Great lad to have in the dressing room, showing the newer and younger boys what it means to pull on the Claret shirt.

Massive for the leadership and experience he brings to the training pitch and club. Can’t imagine him getting on the pitch often, and even in the matchday squad (we need a new striker, and already have Flemming & Foster).

Absolutely delighted with this. His value to the club is more than just on the pitch, I’ve no doubt we’ll look a far more cohesive squad than we did in our last season under Kompany; he’ll be a huge part of that!

This is great news. Even if he's not playing a lot, his experience will be invaluable. We need leaders like him in the squad.

Huge mistake to let him go two years ago in my view but I suspect the manager then didn't like his popularity. I doubt he'll play much but he'll be such an influence on the touchline and in the dressing room.

Superb news, it really is.

Fantastic news. Even if he comes on in the last 10 in a handful of games to slow it down and win some free kicks it could be worth a few points.

The sort of player that is invaluable in a young side in this league.

Even if he doesn’t make an appearance in the Premier League next season I think his experience and character in the dressing room are invaluable. All the players talk about what a great dressing room it is and I think Barnes plays a big part in that. Delighted he’ll be here for another year.

Happy with this , even though I feel it's just going to be for the vibes and experience in the changing room. You need these characters in the squad, even if they don't play much.
Barnes just gets us as club.

Captain of the second XI and the perfect man for that role. See him in the cups and perhaps the odd appearance off the bench, but his value will mostly be in the background. As others have said, it was a mistake not to retain him in this capacity two years ago, whatever the logic for his departure.

I really didn't like the way our former manager talked about letting Ashley go and laughing about it. in that TV prog.

I can't see him having much impact on the pitch, but in a sort of player/coaching role he still has something to offer.

Excellent news.

It seems like only a couple of days ago people were insinuating it was an Alan Pace signing and he wasn’t wanted by Parker.

For sure, i'd not have any questions if he was to be used as a playing coach in the u23s.... but im just not convinced he merits a spot in our 25......

Yes, bit of a grey area. it wouldn't be ideal if he was needed for 90mins.

I thought he might leave, but only because he could still get regular first team football in the championship. Speaks volumes about his character and committment that he wants to stay, knowing his role will mainly be off the pitch not on it.

I agree 100%. You only need to see the reaction from the players after he scored against Luton in March. He's a great influence around the squad.

That said, we need to deal with the likes of Hountondji, Obafemi, Churlinov, Agyei, and (based on their contributions last season) even Foster and Benson. It's ok carrying someone like Barnes, but we can't be carrying too many players who won't have an impact on the pitch.

Agyei has reportedly got another long term injury but the others you mention are going to have to be dealt with. We've been unable to sell either Obafemi or Churlinov so at best I think it might be more loans until their contracts are run down.

There is a lot of deadwood in the current squad - which totals way more than 25
And this just adds to it
Pay him as a salaried member of staff if he is "good for the dressing room"
But as a player at Premier League level

Delcroix, Massengo and churlinov need to go, as much as it hurts so does Benson. Foster I just don’t see ever fulfilling the raw potential he has, will probs make a decent career in a European league.

From a wage bill point of view we need bodies out fast

Absolutely delighted with this news. We are getting a squad filled with quality and character. Something we lacked the last time we were in the prem imo. That could give us the edge required for what will be an incredibly tough season.

And the recruitment begins to follow its familiar pattern, has been fan favourites, obscure unproven foreigners who play for pub league teams, free transfers with long absences through injury and journeyman ex EPL players who might do a job.
Would guess that Brownhill, Steve and Traffs departures will be announced on Monday.
Our current squad has too many fringe players that we need to offload.
Just hope we finish above leeds next season
Claude 3.7

It really is a big list of players we'd (presumably) like to move on. From looking at the squad in its entirety, I think Delcroix, Sambo, Ekdal, Massengo, Churlinov, Obafemi and Hountondji would definitely be ideally moved on, then a couple of others that would probably be allowed to go such as Benson, Tresor maybe 1 or 2 of the keepers. Wouldn't expect them all to go this summer but shows how many players we have that are probably surplus to requirements

I’d imagine he’s on a pay per play/cheerleader type deal , though with the almost complete lack of on field leaders , with real prem experience he may yet play a small part .

I've a feeling that the young lads, the new arrivals, and the hotheads will all benefit from Ash being here.

Give him a rolling contract for me until he completes all his badges, and then make sure that he has a role somewhere within the club.

I'm sure that the value of having good people around a team exists in football as it does in any other walk of life and on that basis retaining Barnes makes a lot of sense.

I guess it remains to be seen whether he takes a spot in the 25 man squad.

that's great news. obviously playing time will be minimal, but such a positive character to have around. Hopefully he can transition into a coaching role of some kind and stay at the club for a good few years to come.

With all of the changes in recent years, he's become a bit of a 'Mr Burnley' so be great to see him on the touchlines around the country doing what he does best.

Well done Clarets for keeping him involved. 8-)

Agreed, but someone has to put the alternative view forward (DA has been absent recently)
But the one thing we need is a striker who can hold up the ball and score goals. Ideally, Chris Wood v2. My issue with Ash is that if he takes a squad spot, that is one less spot for an effective striker.
I agree he will influence in the dressing room, but he is past it and will not be an influence in the PL
