After some of the backlash for him not signing I think it's only fair Josh gets a thread thanking him for his service. Like kids half of you lot with dummy's out.

He's been a good servant and we've had value out of him over his time here. Gave it all last season even though he knew it was likely he would be leaving

Thanks Josh.

I mean, you run the site. You must have seen the multiple comments the last few days around him not being good enough etc. Twitters full of people saying things along the lines of "f*** off then if you dont want to sign".

To be fair, when has he ever looked good enough in the Premier League?

He's just out of contract - although we have to pay him until the end of the month. I can't imagine he'll wait much longer to make a decision though on where he's going, he will need to get involved in pre-season training.

Some weird responses on here.

I'll leave it as, Brownhill is no longer a Burnley player, and I want to thank him for his service, he's done a fantastic job.

Thanks Josh.

He didn’t look like an 18 goals in a championship season midfielder 12 months ago.

You don’t, but he looked a better championship player last season so no reason he couldn’t look a better Premier League one this season.

Last season
Just like Trafford did
…and Esteve

Whether they will be or not we will all have to wait and see. But all of them had great seasons where it’s very easy to argue that they looked good enough to play in the EPL.

That’s not how football works though is it ?

If it was only players who had ever played in the premier league would be the ones being signed by premier league clubs.

Whether it’s players in the championship or any other league clubs will take a view as to whether a player looks good enough for the EPL. And if clubs can take this view then supporters of course can too.

Not sure how you think it’s a “moot” point. It’s an opinion as to whether you think a player is good enough for the EPL based on how he played last season (or previous seasons too).

There’s no definitive answer

Obviously, Brownhill has been a great servant to the club but this is a discussion forum and not fanboy central so you will get some good and bad comments. Albeit I haven't seen a backlash.

I thought last season highlighted what he does well, which is make late runs and get into the box and score goals. I'm not sure he played that well in a double pivot or as a dominating midfield player, which I think is where some of the criticism comes from...! Often he can seem not have the influence on big games that a player of his stature should have.

If he can translate his ability to ghost into the box into the PL he will be a highly valued player but the evidence is that he hasn't thus far. Possibly because we do not have the possession in the PL that players like Brownhill require. It's easier to score 18 goals and ghost into the box if the side you are playing for has 60-70 per cent possession less so when it is 30 per cent.

There was rumours that one of the big two in Scotland wanted him and I think he would be brilliant for them.

I think at nearly 30, expecting him to be able to be good enough for the PL, when he hasn't been previously, is a bit of a stretch.

I should, of course, add that he was excellent for us last season in the championship, which is his level, in my opinion.

The most balanced comments I've seen on Brownhill recognise that his departure will make us poorer because it means our top scorer and captain of last season's squad is gone, whilst also recognising that Brownhill hasn't ever really looked like a capable Premier League performer.

The most balanced comments recognise that it will be difficult to replace his personality and leadership, whilst also recognising that there are players out there who could provide more physicality/ technicality or both for the league we're heading into.

Personally, I sway more towards the idea that potentially losing 3 of our 4 best players (CJ, JB, JT) will be very hard to recover from. The recruitment team will have to work wonders for Parker now.

Anyway, I wish JB all the best wherever he ends up.

Not sure how a thread thanking Josh has suddenly degenerated.

I haven’t seen a backlash against him either. Just fair comments that we will need better as a regular starter if we are to stay up. The Premier League is taller, stronger and quicker than it was under Dyche. I haven’t seen much that differs from that.

I’d like to thank him for all he has done and wish him all the best for the future except against us. He will always be welcome back in Burnley.

As he hasn’t returned for training it’s likely he is considering all options. He was brilliant last year as a player and captain and his contribution to promotion tremendous.
He pinned back his ears and took on a new role. I’m sure he will do well in the PL. West Ham believe he’s bought a place in Essex. If he does he’ll prove the doom mongers wrong. I doubt Celtic could offer enough.
At nearly 30 he must want to set himself up for life. If we can’t do that I wish him well and thank him for all he did.

Yep you’ve confused me with someone else….i supported Trafford. Though I do not understand the point you are trying to make on Trafford. He has a fantastic season in the championship and that has helped form people’s opinion that he is now good enough for the EPL. Others may think he is not good enough because of his first season in the EPL.

Whether I thought he was good for us in the EPL is irrelevant. You could argue none of them were good enough in the EPL last time but Brownhill has played in the EPL a lot more than just last season.

The point is that he had a fantastic season last year so it’s pretty reasonable for some people to think he would be good enough for the EPL next season - just like Dyche thought he was when he bought him and picked him so many times or when Kompany picked him.

Apologies again. Maybe it was that Vincent's cap poster who was constantly on Trafford's back? I can't remember.

Anyway, no one is disputing the season that the likes of Trafford and Brownhill have just had. How could they?

My point was, that the PL is practically a different sport, and Brownhill has never convinced me and many others that he is up to that standard.

I'm actually fascinated to see how Trafford copes, whether that's with us or someone else.

Time will tell. UTC!

Seems like a lot of people are grumpy on a Wednesday morning, can't see much wrong with the OP myself.

There might not have been a "backlash" but players do seem to get magically worse when they leave us on their own terms. Brownhill is probably about right for our level, somewhere between the PL and the Championship, we may aspire to be more than that and some people may think that means you replace your best players for better but I don't think it does.

Ideally you'd have kept Brownhill and CJ and others would have left and replaced by stronger, ultimately growing your team. I get its out of our hands so somewhat irrelevant but I do find people saying he's no big loss, not good enough etc are not really being fair to someone who was one of ours and the leagues most important players last year.

I was just trying to explain the criticism of him, which does exist and largely centres on the fact that at times he isn't the dominating presence that some midfielders are..! And why he may struggle in the PL. Of course, it's just my opinion.

Cullen has good and bad games but is always at the centre of everything: Laurent the same. Josh Brownhill sometimes not so much.

Of course when you are a 100 point best side in the league team a Brownhill type player will score goals and do well but is his game suited to grinding out a point in a double pivot for a team that has 30 per cent possession?

I think he is a PL quality player if a PL team needs a Josh Brownhill and I think we do to be honest but it looks like he could be going anyway.
