Where does he rank alongside Dyche as our greatest modern manager?

Granted Dyche took us to 7th. But circumstances change, the game has moved on slightly and the other teams have progressed massively.

Would 17th make him equal with Dyche, especially with what he inherited? Would he need to get us in Europe to match Dyche?

He'd still be miles off. It's a bit unfair because it's nearly impossible for him to reach the level dyche did just because of the different circumstances they inherited

It will take more than one promotion and a survival to surpass Dyche. If Parkers still here in five years and we're still in the prem then he'll be coming close. For a couple of seasons under Dyche, it almost didn't feel like it was a relegation battle. That's the best compliment I can give him. That for a while, we could actually enjoy the premier league without fearing it. The gap has widened and maybe survival is a bigger feat than then. But what I want is to get to the last 5-10 games of a premier league season with it looking likely we will survive and not fearing a horrible slog to the end of the season. If Parker can give us that he'll be up there. Dyche made us competitive at the level above and that's the minimum requirement anyone can have in getting close to him.

A better comparison for me is how Parker does this season with how Dyche did in his first PL season with us

If he keeps us up then he's ahead of VK but will still be some way off what Dyche achieved.

Parker seems to be being backed a lot more than Dyche was. He had to scrap around for free transfers and cheapies mainly.

This is all a bit daft, really.
Basing one possible survival at his first attempt against the known achievements of a previous (very successful) manager.
Sometimes it's better to see how things unfold over a comparitive period.

There's things Parker simply couldn't match Dyche on because they were already in place when he arrived. Dyche's impact and legacy goes much further than just keeping us up.

Dyche was allowed to break our transfer record 5 times.

Gray, Brady, Wood, Gibson, Weghorst.

The only "more backed" manager we've ever had is Kompany.

He managed what 7/10 seasons in the PL, at a time when PL money went completely nuts, after we had had just 1 year in the PL previously, following a 40+ year absence from the top flight.

Of course, he broke the transfer record multiple times - still minuscule compared to the money he brought in to the club.

Hope he matches Sean Dyche for our sake .
If he does that would be fabulous, but Sean Dyche changed not only the teams standing but the club as a whole

I think the point he is making is that the squad Parker has inherited was considerably weaker than the squad Dyche was working with towards the end (and that is after seasons of being a prem team).

For what it’s worth I think it would be a great achievement, I think you could almost argue manager of the season level accomplishment.

The gap is so big now that it is almost a joke. The teams we are supposed to be competing with a just blowing us out the water.

Brentford so far 55m on 3 players
Brighton 80m on 4 players
Wolves 50m on 2 players

This is the level we are working against where established premier league clubs are already paying 20-30m per player this early in the window.

I'll personally rent and reopen Burtons for a day, just to show my bare bottom in the window!

In reality it won’t be Scott keeping us up, it will be the combined efforts of the whole club and fans.

The amount spent on players will as ever be a massive factor.

That alone gives Dyche plenty of credit in the bank.

I'd be massively , pleasantly surprised.

If he is still here and we have been relegated then he gets the chance to take us back up. unless it has been an absolute **** show ( and I mean far far worse than VK's prem horror show.)

As I recall it, Dyche inherited a decent squad when he took over from Howe.

There were players who came good in a big way under Dyche that had never really been close to performing at those levels before (Trippier, Mee, Ings, Vokes) but when you see those names you think of the players they became, not the players they were at the time.

For context the midfield in Dyche's first game at Burnley was David Edgar, Brian Stock, Ross Wallace and Dean Marney. Now, whatever you think of what Parker inherited you can't possibly compare the two.

Exactly as you have posted. The fact that the 3 promoted clubs have gone straight back down 2 seasons in a row means that none of these so called “fringe clubs” have experienced the player upheaval and financial consequences that relegation can bring. Posters on here get excited when a big name player leaves one of the so called lesser lights believing them to be significantly weakened and set for a season of struggle. Wolves may have sold Cunha (15 goals) but they still have Strand Larsen (14 goals) and are able to spend the £50m from the Cunha sale on signing 2 new players. These mid table clubs will still have significantly stronger squads than Burnley when the season kicks off.

No, I realise Dyche also inherited a big challenge. But the expectations were different too.

Highly unlikely anyone will come close to what Dyche achieved here.

Dyche had his hands tied with transfers that season. We desperately needed cover in central midfield and didn't get it. Although we had Nathaniel Chalobah on loan and he didn't rate him so maybe he got that wrong.
I remember being fuming that the board didn't back him to keep us up. In the long term it didn't matter as we came back as champions with a 'strong jaw.'

Parker needs a top 10 finish and keep us in the PL for multiple seasons before comparisons can be done

Dyche started out with little money to spend, plus he ensured we had the training ground redeveloped at the expense of his transfer budget

Regardless of comparisons with SD or indeed any previous managers, if he keeps us up, it'll be a superb achievement in it's own right.

If he keeps us up, I will have to make myself sick on humble pie. I'm already sick of eating it, but if he beats the odds this season, I'll have to eat hundreds of pies!

There isn't a comparison for me, Sean Dyche achieved more with less and kept us there against the odds.

Scott Parker has had an excellent beginning to his tenure breaking records in Domestic and European stats. I hope he can match Sean for longevity in the Premier League.
