Kevin Lynch

I was watching an episode of under the cosh tonight with the referee Kevin Lynch. He said about us “if it’s 25 to 8 in the evening in this country, in Burnley it’s 1935”

He also said that we threw bananas onto the pitch in a game to the mid to late 90’s (he referenced waddle being the manager) against Blackpool away because they had a few black players. We were the only club we reported to the FA for racism. Can anyone shed any light on this?

His stories are interesting but the way he spoke about us was less than flattering.

Once had the misfortune to meet him on a train.

I remember some Rochdale fans throwing bananas on the pitch at Burnley. Leighton James picked on up and ate it throwing the skin off the pitch.Re reporting clubs for racism I reported several incidents to the Police at Millwall in an away game and it got covered by the Times .The gutless FA did the square root of sod all.

We have had a thread on this before and his stories proved to be bullshit.

The only thing I can remember about that Blackpool game was him sending off John Mullin who was on loan to us at the time from Sunderland.

It wasn't too bad when ex footballers used to exaggerate on the after dinner circuit as it was aimed at making drunk people laugh and most stories would be forgotten with a hangover.

Now, with podcasts etc.. they will be available for years to come.

I once wrote to the FA, Football League and Millwall themselves about racism (monkey chants) at thier ground. Millwall answered me basically saying it didnt happen and that its was boos based around a fictitious story they made up then a couple of weeks later the FA and Football League both wrote back to me and said that they can see Millwall have answered me and were happy with that. Totally brushed under the carpet.

Ignoring the rules just because he didn’t like a certain player…. Gutless, and lacks integrity, in a profession that DEMANDS it. Arsehole.

As above made up a load of stories and comes across as an arrogant arsehole which was probably his aim.

All made up and over-exaggerated. It’ll make him a few more quid when doing his after-dinner speaking. A bit like Dean Saunders who sadly adds parts to stories about Brian Clough during his battle with alcoholism to make the story ‘funnier’.

I genuinely couldn’t watch that podcast on account of how ugly the man is. Skin crawl vibes.

I don’t think anything could explain his performance away at Barnsley other than sheer incompetence ……probably the worst officiating I have ever seen .

Clough, one of the worst for telling stories about others when he was on the after dinner circuit. When I saw him he absolutely tore into Gary Birtles and, in particular, Justin Fashanu while launching an attack on our former chairman Bob Lord who had only weeks before passed away.

I think there’s a saying about two wrongs not making a right….

I left that night with absolutely no respect for him whatsoever and I also know how much he ripped off a struggling non-league club with last minute demands which forced them to pay him four times what had been agreed.

I remember watching this a while ago. I really enjoyed it and took it for what it was, an entertaining part fact and exaggerated fictitious account of his time as a ref. For me Lynch was 1 of the worst refs about but this doesn't deter the fact that he is a great storyteller. That is IMHO of course and some of you may disagree.

I thought it was at Burnden Park when Taffy ate the banana and it was very early 90s (would’ve had to be). That said, I’ve witnessed some pretty appalling racism from Burnley fans over the years so we’re not entirely innocent in this respect.

I recall that. I think John put his hands on Lynch’s chest and got a red card. Really looked innocuous.

It was the battle of Burnden in 1988, the banana was aimed at former Bolton player George Oghani.
