Sunderland’s training ground used to be at Washington.pureclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 7:42 pmHave just heard REAKING:News The board of the Spanish football federation have approved LaLiga's request for Villarreal v Barcelona to be played in Miami in December

More seriously, I’m hoping FIFA block this nonsense.

Don’t think it can happen here but the concern is if it happens in one country it makes it easier for others.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:05 pmI susoect that if FIFA dont , our club will be one of those that is all over this...

Didn’t Wrexham and Birmingham have a request to have their league game played in America rejected last season? I seem to remember the FA refused as it would set an unhealthy precedent.

Once we get to 14 American owners in the Premier league, anything could happen...

Not anything once the regulator is in place but it’s worrying and it’s up to 11 now.Transpennine wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:18 pmOnce we get to 14 American owners in the Premier league, anything could happen...

Agreed.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:20 pmNot anything once the regulator is in place but it’s worrying and it’s up to 11 now.
It'll be interesting what the final remit of the regulator ends up being. The House of Lords has proposed about 370 ammendments.... many of them led by Karen Brady.... who isn't exactly a fan.
Hopefully the regulator will have the necessary power to stop this nonsense...

Maybe that’s the regulator’s first job - get rid of Brady.Transpennine wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:25 pmAgreed.

If any evidence was needed of American owners not understanding British football, or perhaps more worryingly, not giving a hoot, this is it.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:16 pmDidn’t Wrexham and Birmingham have a request to have their league game played in America rejected last season? I hope it never happens but I certainly wouldn’t bet against it.

Wouldn't that be sweet. They could get the taxpayers' cash back as well for that stadium. But we won't go there....ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:26 pmMaybe that’s the regulator’s first job - get rid of Brady.![]()

Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
The US football authorities were lobbying FIFA to have prem games in the US before the World Cup, very interesting.
Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
Don't see why we shouldn't go there. It was, and remains, a disgrace.Transpennine wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 9:10 pmWouldn't that be sweet. They could get the taxpayers' cash back as well for that stadium. But we won't go there....

FIFA backed out of a defense of it's old statures 16 months ago - when it was apparent that they and the MLS would would lose their series of court battles
it was all followed on the MMT for several years
most of the details around the climbdown can be found here - search.php?keywords=Relevent&t=20891&sf=msgonly
as for those expecting the new regulator to do more than what was contained in the Football Governance Act (it is now law), that would take more bills to be put before parliament

Money talks and FIFA is run by charlatans so anything is possible.

Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
I've no doubt it'll happen one day, which is sad. The only way to chase growth is to push global reach. All they care about is making money, the days of owners genuinely caring about the community, supporters and historic culture of a given club is over. It was over as soon as it became the norm to pay players as much per day as some folk earn in years.

If this does happen (and I really hope this doesn’t) would those fans that have bought a season ticket for 19 games get a refund/discount?

It'd be an away game and I suspect that tickets might get to open sale.

If la liga do it all other leagues will follow and claim they have to do so to compete. The premier league will be no different. The big clubs will push for it. Not only to have games in America but the middle east and asia.
It will be interesting to see what Espanyol do.

This would be an even bigger joke because of the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. Why not just invert the fixtures and play them away? They knew about this when the fixtures were compiled.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Wed Aug 13, 2025 2:09 pmSeire A may be having a game in Austrailia if the Italian FA approves

Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
It’s down to the players to take a stand but when they do the clubs would chuck more money at them and they’d fold.
Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
I doubt whether the players alone would hold sway.
They're employees after all and play who and where they're told.
Hopefully the new Football regulator will hold a position of some clout. Someone Who will be able to maintain the interests of the Community- the supporters - and long term interests of the clubs, so the football clubs loyal fan base is respected.

It was on talk sport yesterday I think that the PL have indicated there are no plans or discussions to do this.
Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
The regulator will also have the power to make this nonsense happen. It's a mistake to assume that the regulator will agree with "us" and oppose "them". He or she might go the other way.Transpennine wrote: ↑Mon Aug 11, 2025 8:25 pmAgreed.

Re: New venue for Sunderland v Burnley
posted on the MMT, but for those who do not look at that - there are many - it is also relevant to this thread
Chester Perry wrote: ↑Fri Aug 15, 2025 3:15 pmThis is essentially a legal argument, most pertinently it neglects to mention that the MLS had opposed league matches from other countries being played on US soil - that is why Relevent went to court (with several cases) in the US so they could promote such games. It also neglects to mention that FIFA appeared in court to support the MLS stance. That knowledge makes the argument somewhat weasely and revisionist.
from The Athletic
A La Liga game in Miami is a grim prospect, but it’s not FIFA’s job to stop it
