Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
Why, just why?
Surely with the tough fixtures we have coming up, the last thing we need is that sort of distraction?
And just imagine the outcry on here if Parker were to focus on the PL - as he should, and a much weakened team were to collapse as we did at PNE last year.

Can’t think of a worse draw. Why on earth would we want that?

I had the misfortune of working with loads of band wagon jumpers in the nineties when Walker was throwing his money around, for me the more times we can beat them the better.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 4:49 pmCan’t think of a worse draw. Why on earth would we want that?

Any of Stockport, Wigan or Bolton away would do nicely thanks.
Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
A new away ground or somewhere we haven't played for a while. Harrogate or Bradford, got a feeling Oldham are already out?

Most of us had similar experiences. However, we have a difficult season ahead why would you want a hollow victory against a vastly inferior setup, when potentially it will not only distract from our focus, but potentially endanger some our most vital assets.winsomeyen wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:05 pmI had the misfortune of working with loads of band wagon jumpers in the nineties when Walker was throwing his money around, for me the more times we can beat them the better.

Did you expect us to beat PNE in the cup last year?winsomeyen wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:05 pmI had the misfortune of working with loads of band wagon jumpers in the nineties when Walker was throwing his money around, for me the more times we can beat them the better.
Assuming we would win is ridiculous.
Against almost anyone else Scott Parker would be fielding a 2nd string of squad players.
Can’t imagine Parker would want to play the first team, but might feel pressure to do so if it was against them.
Either way that lot down the road would relish it and play their best team. It would be their Cup final
They would have nothing to lose, and whilst personally I wouldn’t be bothered if we exited the cup to focus on the league, I would be v upset if we went out to that lot.

Play them when we have to. That’s more than enough for me.winsomeyen wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:05 pmI had the misfortune of working with loads of band wagon jumpers in the nineties when Walker was throwing his money around, for me the more times we can beat them the better.

I never attend a game 'expecting' anything but I do go 'hoping' for a good performance/ victory. A win at Preston on both occasions last season was always possible and certainly not a 'ridiculous' notion.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:26 pmDid you expect us to beat PNE in the cup last year?

I was responding to the poster who wants us to play Rovers because- by implication of his post - we would be bound to win, which as your post implies is a ridiculous assumption.

As much I I love seeing us beat them, I want to play them as few a times as possible so we can clock up the “years undefeated” like they did with the 35yrswinsomeyen wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:05 pmI had the misfortune of working with loads of band wagon jumpers in the nineties when Walker was throwing his money around, for me the more times we can beat them the better.

Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
Focus on the PL? We have 11 matches to play in the next 3 months. I doubt that any of our players will be in need of rest after that schedule.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 3:40 pmWhy, just why?

Hopefully someone like Derby at home and not a unique away game seeing as I’m away on holiday that week

Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
You could look at it that way, but do you really think that Scott P would want another tough match and to play his best team in the same week that we play Sunderland and Man U?
Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
Probably he wouldn't.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Wed Aug 13, 2025 9:29 amYou could look at it that way, but do you really think that Scott P would want another tough match and to play his best team in the same week that we play Sunderland and Man U?
On the other hand, would he want to send a message to the players that they are going to spend all season struggling and playing a midweek match against a lower league team is too tough for them?

Brum vs Sheff United on ITV4 this evening. Not signed up for Sky Sports / NOW TV yet, so football is in short supply.

Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
I see you make this argument quite frequently, and whilst I can completely understand someone wanting us to compete in every competition that we enter, I can't help but feel that you're being deliberately ignorant about the impact of games in close proximity on the physical performance of players. It's a pretty well established fact that a player playing on Saturday and Tuesday will not be physically capable of performing at 100% on the following Saturday. If this wasn't a thing then managers would play their strongest team in all competitions, why wouldn't they?
Now of course we have a gigantic squad which we could field for cup games, but there has to be a trade-off - whether that be taking the cups less seriously, or accepting the impact that playing the first team will have on our ability to compete in league matches. It's a game of fine margins, and with such a tough task ahead in the league, there's no doubting that playing a second eleven and getting knocked out of the league cup would give us a marginally better chance of avoiding relegation. It's sad, but true.

Re: League Cup 2nd Round Draw
Yes, but my post was relating (at the time), to someone wanting us to play Rovers. They are a lower league team, but most of our fanbase would expect SP to play our strongest team.
A repeat of the PNE debacle would not be acceptable.
Anyway, remind me again how Bradford went on last night

How can Clinton Morrison make a draw appear so difficult? All the numbers have a line at the bottom of the number. It's literally reading a number out
