It will book up no problem, no decent hotel in the town centre and very few in the town at all.

Must be structurally sound to make a massive renovation cheaper than a rebuild but if that’s the case then fair play it will be a welcome addition.

Its a miracle the whole complex hasnt burnt to the ground in the last 20 years. Wouldnt put any money on it not burning down in the next 12 months though.

It is I believe and they are connected to Pettys. They also have the Red Lion at the bottom of Manchester Road which is now a coffee shop I think.

The structural integrity of the concrete beams has never been an issue.

The fact that they’re part of an ugly and depressing, hideously designed building is the problem.

This will be the same crummy building with a plastic facade.

Can’t disagree much but the newer version does look probably as good as it can be without demolishing it and that’s not going to happen as the councils heritage report says it’s an important example of 1960’s architecture and a good example of the post war reconstruction of Burnley town centre.

This is as good as it’s going to get and they’ve done a fantastic job with the ‘Above hotel’ on Manchester Road.

Somebody else called it a polished turd, which is precisely what it will be.

When the fundamental design is so awful, a polished turd is the best the building can ever hope to be. It’s a shame the owners seemingly don’t have the funds to knock it down and start again.

This renovation will do wonders for this part of town which is desperately needed. The building at present gives a negative impression of the town to any out of town visitor to Burnley/Turf Moor- As a resident I'm looking forward to this plan vastly improving this eyesore.

What I absolutely DO know, is that it won’t be anywhere near as easy on the eye as the artists impression is…

I mean, I agree and hope that they do well -

To me that render is bloody awful (even if it's the probably the best they can do) and that proposed sign jutting out like that makes it even worse.

Tenfold improvement on what is currently there right now though. Hope all that godawful white cladding around that section of town gets replaced.

As a former occupier of a clean en-suite room with secure underground parking I am pleased to see it is being refurbished.
Hampton by Hilton and the like aren't building here anytime in the forseeable future, the Premier Inn went backwards years ago which leaves the Holiday Express as the only real rival.
If the work internally is carried out as expected and the outside has new cladding, it'll be full on football days.

It's got to be a huge improvement on the eyesore we have had to put up with for years. The Calico office building directly opposite is a dark brown brick structure and maybe that's influenced the colour of the cladding.
Yeah can see it being full on matchdays hopefully more PL seasons.
Just hope to see the Empire Theatre open at the opposite end of St James's Street before I shuffle off this world.

Driving, you see the main structure but for most people the shops are what grab your attention. They are not great for parking etc and I can't see quality businesses taking them on.

Built in 1960, by the Haworth Construction Company, which had it's Offices at what is now Oakmount Vets on Trafalgar Street. The owner was Eric Cookson, a local character who lived in a stunning modern design house, " Domus " at 542 Colne Road, which is a grade II listed building. He tried to get a seat on the board at Burnley FC in the late 1960's but was blocked by Bob Lord. He also introduced Ken Bates to Football, by bringing him to a Burnley game. Bates ended up as Chairman of Oldham in the late 60's before famously buying Chelsea for £1 in 1982 ...

Eric was a fascinating character, who bore a resemblance to the actor, Leslie Phillips, and like Phillips, had an eye for a pretty girl. He sold Haworth Construction in the early 1960's getting out before the Company overstretched and went bust. He served as a JP, was on the Board of the Burnley Building Society, and was a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. He served in the Grenadier Guards as a Tank Commander during WW2, and whilst on leave during the War, commandeered an armoured car from a local Barracks and drove down to his girlfriend's home on Lyndhurst Road, in full dress uniform to propose, armed with a bunch of roses ! His wife Rose passed away in 1994, and Eric died, aged 79, in 1998 in his own home, watching his other passion, Formula 1 with a glass of single malt whisky in his hand !

Yep, I'd be surprised if something hasn't been sorted along with all of these plans. It'd be a daft to plough all this money in if the shops at the front are going to be left looking as scruffy as they do currently.

I think? Haworth Construction were the contractors for the whole town centre development back in the 60's and whilst being responsible for the Kierby (which actually wasn't half bad in it's day) can also proudly claim responsibility for the precinct and the brilliant and aesthetic (irony) underground car park which has more pillars than car spaces it seems.
As regards the current plans, surely anything is better than nothing, barring demolition. Good luck to those putting their money into something they believe in and I hope it's a success. My main concern as an investor would be the car parking situation as "on site" parking is far more important to people now than it was 50 years ago and the Kierby doesn't really have enough. Maybe?

That's true.

The Kierby will have looked polished when it was brand new and it will look polished again when it's re-clad.

However it's kicking the can down the road. We'll be in the same position in 10-20 years time. The cycle will continue until the thing comes down properly.

In the mean time, I'm glad it's getting a makeover.

So much for me hoping this would be something more fundamental than a cladding exercise.

Quite fitting that it's going to be done in sh1tty brown, when it comes to the ultimate in turd polishing.

As pointed out above it won't look anything like the artist impression. It'll look like the Kierby, but with brown tiles on it.
