Hountondji

Post by depechedingle » Fri Aug 29, 2025 8:51 pm

Just scored a fantastic goal in the Hamburg derby

Hamburg 0-2 St Pauli

Played through rounded the keeper and scored brilliantly from a tight angle.

Hands up, I'd wrote him off. Good to see him looking fit and doing well.

Great club . St Pauli . Is this the model in practice ? Increases his value whilst on loan and sell him for decent fee ?

Got the game on in the background and hadn't even realised it was him. Really was a great finish from the angle he ended up at.

He might end up back with us yet. Our striking options aren't that great.

Can only be a good thing for us if he is doing well. He took the goal very well.

Have said for a while that this is exactly the model I think they’re looking to deploy.

Why have a squad of 25 players, half hardly playing, leaving about 11-15 that are growing in value, when you can have a squad of maybe 35-40, send 10-15 out on loan and hopefully have nearly double the amount of players growing in value?

Buying Espanyol and probably shares or outright purchases in other clubs in future (e.g. Dundee) probably enables that as well.

That said, I think the goal for all players we sign will be to play for the first team at some point, just that ALK won’t care much if they don’t but they generate profits for reinvestment.

There will also be some that don’t make it and end up being a net cost (Etienne Green being the most recent example), but again I doubt ALK will care much; it’s like any share portfolio, some will always lose, it’s about picking more winners than losers.

Back on topic: I’ve always liked the look of Hountondji. A few months ago there was a thread of posters writing him off as a dud which is ridiculous at such a young age. Let’s say he carries on this form and comes back in summer a 15 goal Bundesliga striker at 23… what price would he command?? €15m???

Surprising what happens when a player is put in their correct position.

Yes; he wasn't so good, in the few games he got time in, at hanging around the penalty area hoping a ball would find him.

Brilliant club. Punching above their weight. I'd recommend a visit to the Millerntor to anyone. Fantastic stadium. Tight, compact, modern but gritty, traps and amplifies the atmosphere. What the Turf should be. And as for that atmosphere - phenomenal. In my opinion fan culture in Germany is lightyears ahead of over here. I also think they nail merchandise and ticketing in a way Burnley don't.

St Pauli the district and Hamburg in general is worth a visit - one of my favourite cities.

Chuffed for Hountondji. He, Eric Smith and Joel Fujita looked the best players on the pitch. HSV are pretty rank and the game is generally a bit slower in Germany. Not taking anything away from him though - he looked quick and strong and it was an excellent finish.

To give a bit of context Woltemade, Sesko and Ekitike have all just sold for over 65m after scoring a grand total of:

Woltemade - 12 Bundesliga goals
Sesko - 13 Bundesliga goals
Ekitike - 15 Bundesliga goals

If Hountondji does anything like 15 goals this season we could be getting a transfer record transfer from him. Or potentially he comes back and starts for us.

Fair do’s, it’s a tidy finish. Still a way from eating humble pie just yet but it’d be great if he keeps it up.

Genuinely thought this lad was absolute bobbins so would love to be wrong.

They’re incredible stats when presented like that.

As a club, I don’t think we’re big enough to maybe command the really massive fees, and obviously they have to attract a Newcastle/United/Liverpool interested to get those fees. But it just shows how, if we get this model of early identification and develop via loans model right (even for one or two players), there are potentially huge rewards on offer.

I don’t think we will get near them sums. But he’s the same age as them and if he bangs in 15 plus. I could certainly see him going for north of 30.

Long way to go and that would be a crazy achievement for him. But let’s hope he does.

If he does that and develops sack selling him, I'd want him starting for Burnley!

Maybe, if we stick away from the slow build up which has done us very well in 2 Championship promotions.

Encouraging start, but before we get carried away, he didn’t set the world on fire at Standard Liege last season - 4 goals and 1 assist in 18 appearances
