Been announced as ‘an option to make permanent’ which is weird considering every man and their dog called it as an obligation to be permanent. Why would he do a full leaving video to Benfica fans if it was just for a season?
Anyway, on paper looks a cracking signing.

It is an obligation but I suspect there might be some conditions

Benfica's official announcement states Burnley will pay an initial loan fee of €2m (£1.7m), with a “mandatory clause” to make the deal permanent for €24m (£20.74m).

Like this.
That gives us another tall DM. Not quite a Big Les Unit but has a certain physical stature.
Very considerable experience including CL.

Those are the figures I've quoted in the article

Option not obligation. Doubt we can have an obligation if relegated.

And I've been in a meeting for the last hour so had to be ready quickly when it was announced.

Its a mandatory clause announced by Benfica. Portugal has a rule that clubs must announce the full details of the transfers. So you can trust them as 100% accurate.
For us it’s just a case of delaying cash flows for cash flow reasons or PSR. It’s essentially a £23m signing now.

What Benfica have said
Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD informs that it has reached an agreement with Burnley for the loan of the player Florentino Luís until the end of the 2025/26 sporting season, for an amount of €2,000,000 (two million euros). The aforementioned agreement includes a mandatory clause for the exercise of the definitive transfer of the player's sporting rights, for the amount of €24,000,000 (twenty four million euros), therefore, the total value of the transfer will amount to €26,000,000 (twenty six million euros). It is further informed that Burnley will have the right to retain the 5% solidarity mechanism, for subsequent distribution to the clubs that participated in the player's training, and Benfica SAD will incur intermediation fees of 10% of the remuneration value deducted from the solidarity amount."

If its a mandatory clause it counts as this season for PSR. Only helps us with cash flow

On paper a great signing. The defending has been shocking in the two away games and first half on Saturday was pre 4-4-2 VK.
If we can get Cullen and Florentino in a double pivot with Ugochukwu to drive forward and Tchauouna/ Anthony making up the five we should have a powerful, pacy running midfield 5: going forward at least.
If someone can show Anthony where his reverse gear is and Tchaouna has a bit of defensive discipline we may have quite a formidable midfield.
Saying that if we try and defend high up the pitch against big PL clubs it will be another case of chasing shadow.

Really? Not sure on that... PSR is based on accounting dates and if we don’t recognise the permanent transfer until the next accounting period (26/27), it won’t affect this years PSR calcs. Can you show me an example of this not being true?

In terms of FFP and the accounts, if it is a straight obligation to buy after the loan then the transfer hits the accounts when the loan starts.

The big difference will be when the VAT is due, even if the transfer is paid in installments the VAT is paid upfront.

A Benfica fan posted:
"Defensively he's a world class midfielder. Just don't expect him to contribute that much to the build up play. For 6 months we was paired with Enzo Fernandez at Benfica and the two of them formed the best midfield pairing we had in years. Good luck"
Sounds like he'll work well with Cullen at getting the ball back.

Was it? I watched it and thought it was a pretty crap. Perhaps we need to mix it up a bit, now.
The clicks and giggles reveals aren’t aimed at me, I get that.

We did, although the club has been at pains to say it has learned lessons. Interesting that at the time of that one, Burnley simply stated it was a loan.

Not sure the reveal videos are intended just to be funny. The editing skills are also to be admired. The variety of different scenarios. You only need to see reactions on X, to see how well received the videos are, not everyone can be expected to appreciate them, but a significant number do.

Not sure that's correct
The reason villa have signed two players today on loan with mandatory clauses, is because it doesn't count towards PSR this season, otherwise they would have breached it.
