Yom Kippur - day of atonement holiest day in the Jewish calendar, always a potential target for violence, hence the 1973 war which nearly destroyed the state of Israel

Awful, awful event. Gutless attack on innocent people heading to a place of worship on their holiest day.

I've lived not far from this place but moved away. Always baffled me that there was a huge Hasidic Jewish community (Heaton Park/Prestwich) that bordered a huge muslic community (Cheetham Hill) but you rarely saw or heard of any incidents between the two - on the face of it, living quite peacefully side by side. Indeed you often saw Hasidic Jews shopping in the center of Cheetham Hill.

It's a terrible event, but that's not true. It's safer now than it's been for a long time, statistically.

Yeah less of the yaxley-lennon/reform hyperbole please.

This is an awful incident, just a few miles from my house which makes it more shocking, but it’s very obviously a targeted attack given the current Middle East situation and not an attack on Manchester which, judging by being outside in town, most people are finding pretty safe right now.

Very true. Rarely, if ever, hear of any problems between them.

Apparently the first Jewish settlers arrived in the area late 19th century.

Just grim, very grim.

The algorithms have done a real job on people - as evident with some of the responses in this thread.

An incredibly dark day.

Major props to the law enforcement on the scene who prevented it from being any worse.

Good work by the police to take him out before any further harm was done.

Best place for him

If you do see the vid, just look at the total Bell -nds that just stand their with there phones out when there is a bloke dying on the floor, I am serious the world is a total F-ch up.
There is even a bloke shouting he has a bomb shoot him again to the Police just before they do actually shoot him again. He had no bomb but that's very lucky as he may have injured more who just would not move on.

The guy filming is obviously stuck in traffic and wanting to get out of there, totally disagree with him filming or the lack of help for the guy on the floor.

The BBC or MSM (rolls eyes) have photos where he looks like he has a bomb or something to imitate he had a bomb. Unfortunately the guy filming was probably at the scene before the police, so would have seen what he thought was a bomb.

We've just had a racist terror attack in the North West. It's pretty hard to avoid politics if you are going to talk about it.

Appalling attack. Words cannot do it justice.

Anyone who has taken the X43 to Manchester will have seen the private security employed at Jewish schools and synagogues.

It’s a crying shame that this sort of thing is happening on our doorstep.

Thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this, including the police firearms officer who has had to carry out a terrible task that he’s unlikely to ever forget.

By the sounds of it, the security here played a big role in stopping the perpetrator from entering the synagogue and far more atrocities occurring. What a relief they were there.

Many times as I've walked around Clowbridge Res. I've come across many Jewish families who go on the bus from Prestwich.......I hope they continue to do so and to enjoy our countryside.
As you say Rowls, a absolutely appalling attack.

I lived in Crumpsall in the 1960's going to grammar school.from there to Salford each day. It's always been a very cosmopolitan area of the city but there appeared to be a mutual respect back then. The 21st century is world's away from those times and today's tragedy only serves to reinforce that view.

This was when Egyptian forces tried to take back The Sinai peninsula and Syria the Golan heights both occupied by Israel after the war in 67
Don’t think the coalition of Arab forces got near to defeating Israel
All the Arab Israeli wars have achieved has been more land lost to Israel
Camp David did get Egypt their land back

Just watched the video shown on Sky when the police decide to shoot the killer.

Huge responsibility on those officers, men who don't earn huge wages. We know the British police rarely use firearms unlike their counterparts in most countries. I believe they had to shoot him and I hope they will be backed.
