New Mattress Advice

Given the international break I thought I'd ask the UTC cognoscenti about mattresses.
I don't sleep very well anyway, but I am in the market for a new mattress, otherwise it'd be a weird topic to bring up.

A quick google of 'super king mattress' yields results betwixt £299 and £1599 so lets split the difference and say a budget of around £700 for a 10+ year mattress.
Anyone have any advice or opinions to offer?

We spent around £150 on a basic mattress, then added a £50 mattress topper that is amazingly comfortable. It was only supposed to be for the short term, but we haven't bothered changing.

My advice - dont buy one without lying on it first.
Dont know if you’re local, but i went to Briercliffe Beds up Harle Syke, lots to try and very helpful.

We did the whole “mattress in a box” thing with Emma a couple of years back. Didn’t think I’d like it, but it’s held up really well and I actually sleep through the night now. Pretty sure they’ve got a 200-night return policy too.

I bought a new bed last year, in fact it was October when it arrived so I've had it around a year. After asking around, I went to Briercliffe Beds and the lady I dealt with could not have been more helpful. Whether you choose to buy a mattress from them or not, I'd definitely support Eloise Laws' recommendation and pay them a visit.

Spend as much as you can. We bought an expensive one about 8 years ago and it is one of the best investments I’ve ever made

Whatever you decide you are better sleeping on it first. I think nowadays the actual spring mattresses don't matter as much providing you have a good memory foam topper. When I got 1 years I asked somebody at silentnight for a sheet of the stuff & just put it on a basic mattress for a dreamland sleep.

Get an Emma Sleep memory foam mattress topper and prolong the life of your mattress indefinitely for an outlay of a few hundred quid.

I did and it's brilliant

Edit: wait for a discount, they happen all the time. I think my S-King was £200 but I'd have to check, it was around that.

Back up the posters saying a mattress topper. My other half is a very restless sleeper and with our old mattress it was like sleeping on a bouncy castle as she moved around. Last time out I went for pocket sprung… feel virtually nothing now as the springs act independently of each other.

Pop into a Premier Inn and ask where they get theirs. Unbelievably good, said knowing all tastes are different.

I can recommend OTTY mattresses. Had mine for about 4 years now and it's still great.

I got this one https://otty.com/products/otty-pure-hyb ... o-mattress

Wait until black Friday and they usually have some serious discounts - I think I paid around £500 and they also threw in 2 x memory foam pillows.

Made by silentnight beds in Barlick.

Pocket spring in Skipton were more luxurious than silentnight until folded. As already mentioned if you aren't bothered about bedding & aesthetically pleasing a basic bog standard mattress will do with a good spongy topper. The posture felt & topaz comprises of recycled clothing when I worked at the silsden branch before it burnt down we pulled sharped objects out with pliers before stapling & gluing. People spend a fortune when it's not necessary but clever marketing pays for itself.

We stayed in a PI about 10 days ago and can confirm their mattress was really comfy. The wife noticed it was from Silentnight. We bought a decent one from Dreams several years ago, I like a reasonably hard mattress the one we chose was a Risborough D mattress.

We got a mattress years ago from Mattressman, based purely on Brian Jensen rugby tackling him. Still super comfy.

You spend a third of your life in bed, so invest as much as you can in the right quality mattress. 7-10 years is what manufacturers recommend as a replacement period, and I’d imagine if you’re rotating or flipping them every few months you’ll extend the life. Mattress toppers are also great if you get a quality one.

Years ago, I found out the hard way regarding wasted money, that lying on a mattress, for a few minutes in a showroom, can in no way emulate what it's like to sleep on for 6/8 hours. The last three have come from companies that offer a trial and a full refund if it's not suitable.

Can't work out if this is an accusation about my productivity, or a statistical observation.

We've got a Simba hybrid, love it. Think it was about £900 for the king-size. Worth every penny

My advice would be the same as some of the other comments, have a lie on some before you buy one but ultimately buy the one that’s best for you and not what someone else recommends.

As a manufacturer of beds (ABC UPHOLSTERY LTD- if you want to have a look) there is a massive difference in quality between a cheap mattresses and an expensive one. Also the branded mattresses are marked up in price massively due to their name and their fancy marketing.

We’ve got a Simba Hybrid Pro. It’s very comfy but I’m a terrible sleeper anyway.

The wife swears by it, though.

We got a Hamilton and James pillow top mattress off Danabc1985 by far the best mattress we’ve ever had and saved the best part of a grand from what the other retailers charge and his prices include delivery and set up so no extra charges too

We got a Tempur, not the cheapest, the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. Memory foam is the way to go, will last 20 years, worth every penny.

Get a double-sided one so that you can "flip" it . We've had ours for years and it's still super comfy.

I bought a memory foam hybrid (foam on top) a while ago and it’s ok but I find it gets far too hot and am thinking of going back to a traditional mattress.

Look decent prices. I guess the only real downside is not being able to sit/lie/jump on it beforehand. But looks good value compared to the ridiculous prices you see in some other places.
