If you put a device in lost mode does that lock everything and cause you further issues if trying to locate it?

Not 100% sure whether find my Iphone was switched on but I did receive this email:

Dear XXXXXXXXXX,
Your Apple ID (YYYYYYY@ZZZZZZ.com) was used to sign in to iCloud via a web browser.
Date and Time: 12 November 2016, 2:57 PM PST
Browser: Chrome
Operating System: Windows
If the information above looks familiar, you can disregard this email.
If you have not signed in to iCloud recently and believe someone may have accessed your account, go to Apple ID (https://appleid.apple.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and change your password as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Apple Support

Does that email mean that someone logged into my icloud or merely that the icloud was connected at that time? I definitely didnt have the device with me at that time.

Basically I am wondering which is the lesser of two evils - leaving it in its 'normal' state or putting in lost mode?

If i leave as is can they sync it to a pc or mac and transfer my data off there?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry CFC can't answer your question as Im not that clued up on such things, except to say I try where ever possible to stay away from so called "smart" phones and the cloud as I don't trust either yet.

I have an IT question of my own, I own a mini mac and very very happy with it to but OS 10.6 is a bit long in the tooth Apple wise and they say I should download the latest OS.

I am maxed out at 2 GB on my hard drive and ram and Apple recommend a minimum of 3 or 4 I think from memory, so given that my ? Is will I loose or damage anything on my MM in doing so?

Don't go to the web-site provided - it could be a trap. Get in touch with Apple direct and forward them the e-mail. If it is real they will confirm it if not then you have escaped the trap and delete it.

I get similar messages from google. I have two google signins and whenever I change from one account t't'other they message me.
The times are correct but they've told me my account has been accessed in Dublin(no it wasn't) or on a mac(no it wasn't). I think they are taking info from my ISP and misreading it.

Could you not just change your icloud password/s?

That way you can access on any device you have and nobody else can?

(Be worth looking at your icloud and seeing if the person who got your phone maybe took some pics)

The email is more than likely real, I get them all the time as I have 4 different devices that I can say check my Gmail account with and if I log in with say my phone which is Android I get an email telling me that a device has just logged on and if it was not me I need to go to the site also vice versa with my laptop which runs windows 10, so I do not think the email is a fake. The worrying thing is if as you say you lost your iphone then somebody has logged into your Cloud account via Chrome/Windows operating system and the Apple system is IOS, but does seem strange why they would do that.

Wasnt sure if it was because they switched it on and it auto connected.

It was a good while back now so probably too late to worry either way.

Thanks cutsy124 but I don't want to spend on it that's why I just wanted to know if just trying to download the latest OS would be safe to do so.

Looks like a con trick to me. I wouldn't click on the link if I was you.

It's genuine, you get one every time you log into your account from a device you haven't used before.

If you logged into your apple account by collecting email, or through Google Chrome on a PC running windows then you are fine.

Otherwise go to your apple account and change your password.

The web address given is ok but if you don't want to use the link just go to your account without clicking it.

It's a safety feature so not fair to blame Apple for looking out for you.
