And that means that if Bill Gates, as per your suggestion, gives $1m to each of 100,000 of his employees, then he is increasing poverty, because he has raised the threshhold at which poverty starts by increasing the average salary. If I get a pay rise, how can it make you poorer?
Poverty is usually defined using median salary rather than average, so your example is unlikely to change the point at which people fall into poverty.

It'll make at least a marginal difference, but fair point. Either way, it's still a rubbish definition of poverty. For example, if the tax-free allowance doubles, that would be another way of (according to official stats) making people poorer.

It would define more people as poor, not make them more poor.

Under a progressive tax system, such as the one in the UK, it's not possible to earn more and take home less just because you cross a certain threshold. That's a fallacy.

It might not be WORTH for them to do it, but that's a different thing entirely.

It's pension tax related.

Ah right, so it's not a tax problem, it's a shortage of doctors problem.

Of course, the easy way to solve this particular pensions problem is to make the rules for everyone the same as they are for MPs. Because in one of the huge non-scandals of the House of Commons (and it ought to be a HUGE scandal) is that when the rules on super tax of large pensions were first brought in, MPs realised that it would affect them because of the vast non-contributory pensions they "earn". So they made a special exemption - the pensions super tax does not apply to MPs. It is appalling, and it is corruption.
