Sometimes you just have to be seen to be doing something. That was more than a little something LOL. Ramsdale is a good keeper but, as we found with Joe Hart, managing the defence is an essential part of making a team more successful.
Personally, I believe that not having crowds has probably affected Sheff Utd a lot more than most.

It's not just SU though is it. He came back good ths FA Cup last year and we hardly saw him again. Madness to risk him.
This is not the year to make any progress in cups. Trust me, play the reserves.

Probably because it's easier to win the FA Cup than it is to finish 4th in the PL, you only have to win six games.Roosterbooster wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 9:23 pmDoes make you wonder why you get less for winning something (the oldest football cup competition in the world no less), than finishing 4th in something...

Sean makes great points about vaccinations for footballers being cheaper than continuous testing.
Means greater payback for the system, NHS and things remaining competitive.
Also I thought he looked dog rough - hope he's ok.

As regards to the positive tests, could it be that, as we played Aston Villa on the 17th of December and they now have several cases, perhaps it doesn't bode too well that we are now seeing a rise in cases.

Possibly! it's also worth noting we played Sheff Utd after they had also reported an outbreak, so there could be a link with them as well.dermotdermot wrote: ↑Thu Jan 07, 2021 10:55 pmAs regards to the positive tests, could it be that, as we played Aston Villa on the 17th of December and they now have several cases, perhaps it doesn't bode too well that we are now seeing a rise in cases.
Although if PL players are routinely tested twice a week, you'd have imagined any positive cases/symptoms would have emerged prior to now if it involved any of those clubs.

I see that our Seany still doesn't like that Alex James from Lancs Live. It did seem as though it softened a little for a month or so.
I've been trying to think if it's something I'm imagining, but it's still there, definitely still there.
Maybe Mr Pace will get to the bottom of it, considering his comments about communication.

Sean has been hung out to dry by Sky Sports
On Twitter running with the headline that he thinks footballers should be vaccinated.
Lots of angry responses from people who clearly haven’t gathered the context which he reiterated many times in the full interview. Shame, as he made some good points.

Re: SD press conference at 4pm
I think Sean makes what is superficially a very good point about the vaccine, but when you consider what we know about the nature of the vaccinations, the reasons for testing, and the justification for enforcing isolation, it doesn't stand up to scrutiny quite so well. I think he can be forgiven for his suggestion because he's thinking practically, but we should leave policy to those who are better advised.
So here's why he might be wrong. It is still completely unknown whether vaccinated people can act as vectors and spread the disease unknowingly. As far as I can tell this is the crucial flaw in Sean's suggestion. We only know that the vaccine has a high success of providing immunity and thus preventing you from getting sick when infected. So armed with this knowledge (that is to say, to determine a course of action recognising both what we do and do not know) what's the ultimate point, the strategic value of a vaccine? It isn't to prevent people from becoming infected, because you can still be infected; it's to stop infected people becoming sick and needing hospitalisation. But until we're at a point in this vaccine rollout where coverage is widespread enough among vulnerable people that this whole pandemic becomes trivial and our hospitals are back to normal, and until the science is clearer on the vaccine's effect on vectoring (if that's even a word?), there's still the possibility that a fully vaccinated footballer might catch and spread covid unknowingly. The only way to know if he's infected, to guard vulnerable non-vaccinated people from covid, is by doing what we've been doing for almost a year: testing people at scale and forcing those who test positive into isolation. It's not certain whether or not a vaccinated footballer could still spread the disease to his gran, for instance (or to anyone else by just going shopping etc), and the safest thing for his non-vaccinated gran is to have him tested, considering he's in a workplace where socially distancing is impossible. When looked at on the scale of a pandemic, there's a point at which vaccine coverage is sufficient to render mass testing unnecessary, but until we're at that point (we're nowhere near it) we need mass testing and isolation protocols.
I'd love to hear from any folks if there's an obvious blind spot in my thinking.

For the first time, Sean has make a D**k of himself. There is no justification for athletes to receive a vaccine before the vulnerable. I get what he's saying but the cost at this time is irrelevant. I would place footballers firmly last in inoculation. They are are super fit and probably have no issues with Covid. Im sure families who have lost loved ones to covid would have issues with his justification to let footballers have early vaccination.

One part of the interview that stood out for me , all be it was just a couple of seconds, is the communication with new owners. It's encouraging that it sounds like they want to build on what has been achieved over the last decade without changing the team by throwing money at it. IIMO two or three players to strengthen will be great.

I think SD’s comments on the window are spot on. He will have identified his targets but if those clubs aren’t prepared to sell then there’s a good chance it won’t happen. I’d rather he got the players that would improve the first team instead of another ‘back up’ player.

Re: SD press conference at 4pm
I understand the point SD is making, but as stated by another poster, if the vac doesn't stop transmission, players will need testing anyway. SD's mistake was to get involved in this conversation, he knows how it will be misrepresented. He normally speaks a lot and says nothing. We still don't know if the injured players will be fit for the Manchester United game, just that they're making progress as an example.

No they shouldn't be vaccinated. Instead they should pause the season (who really cares at this stage ?) and put the players to use in the vaccination roll out. They're going to be using some of the stadiums as vaccination hubs so why not the players ?

Re: SD press conference at 4pm
I think it's a naive and ill thought out suggestion by Sean, and the headlines off the back of it and associated negativity coming his way on social media were surely obvious.
No, he hasn't suggested that they jump to the front of the queue (that isn't stopping people immediately accusing him of that though...), but he clearly doesn't see that the biggest issue we have in terms of the vaccine rollout is the number of vaccinations we have available and the supply chain for them. We aren't struggling for money to buy them, nor are the NHS (as far as I know?) struggling for PPE/ventilators anymore (space, yes) so some nebulous claim of 'give the money to the NHS and inoculate my footballers to save money' doesn't really aid the country at all at this present moment, but instead comes off a bit tone deaf. The limited supplies we have absolutely must go to the top 4-5 tiers of individuals, and football will rightly be at the back of the queue regardless of testing cost until the supply chain for these vaccines is more plentiful.

If the premier league have moved to lateral flow resting where the result is available in about 30 minutes then it is hardly surprising cases are rising amongst footballerswho once showing a negative test intermingle with colleagues. At best this test will miss 30% even up to 50% of positive cases
Re: SD press conference at 4pm
I think SD has a point if the clubs bought vaccines for the players and made a massive donation to the NHS with the money saved on twice weekly testing to perhaps once a week testing to facilitate local NHS trusts to perhaps buy items to help patients etc.

"I'm not remotely suggesting that should be put in front of the welfare of people who are very vulnerable"
What's actually absurd is that you can read that line and think it means that footballers should be at the high end of people getting the vaccine first. You simply have not understood what those words mean.
What they mean, along with the rest of the comment, is that after the vulnerable have been vaccinated there is a case that footballers should be high on the list of the less-vulnerable. He probably means once the government's current 9 groups, down to over-50, have all been done.

As a public facing individual, when making a statement about something so emotive you need to remember how it can be interpreted/twisted by the likes of Piers Morgan and the various other non-entities that populate daytime television and social media. He is generally very savvy with his media interactions, so I found this sound bite slightly naïve from SD who must have surely considered what the red tops and Twitter would run with it as. Idiots won't read past the headline to the bit where he clearly says he is not asking to go to the top of the queue.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 9:15 amIs that a problem with Sean Dyche, or the general thickness of a society and media establishments that loves to over react and create drama where there is little? Another angle is that footballers are viewed as little demi gods by some, these thick ignorant vaccine deniers might just change their minds when videos of players being vaccinated is rolled out, especially when they encourage people to be vaccinated. As one expert said you wont be safe until we are all safe.

Re: SD press conference at 4pm
Money isn't the issue as the Govt has plenty to fund this and has blown hundreds of billions on contracts to their mates through this crisis. The focus should be on Public Health and the decision should be based on the risk of the virus impacting footballers themselves and the risk of it having the chance to get out into the community from footballers.
I have no view on what that decision should be as I will leave that to those with the medical expertise and those with all the data and with the skills and experience to make that decision
I have no problem with Dyche and what he said and beleive it was done so with complete good intention. I do however think he has got it wrong but understandably he has a focus on keeping football going and has a responsibility for looking out for the club and players he represents so its a tough position for him.
It wasn't long ago that this forum was lambasting Sam Allardyche for speaking out about what he thinks should happen for the best of football and the players so again those who are upset at the way the media and public and reacting to Dyche maybe have a look at yourselves and how you reacted to Fat Sam giving his view

Re: SD press conference at 4pm
Not sure vaccinations would help. As I understand it, a vaccine doesn't stop you getting Covid, or stop you transmitting it. It just stops you getting ill from it. Better that vulnerable people get vaccines than super fit athletes.
Mind you, Sean's proposal that the money being used to test footballers three times a week, is fed back into the NHS vaccination programme, might help.

They're still looking at exactly how it works. I think the current thinking is that it stops you getting covid but the virus can still be present in the nose or similar so you can still spread it (I'm sure the terminology there is all wrong).Gordaleman wrote: ↑Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:26 amNot sure vaccinations would help.
