If Lovebet paid upfront then it sounds good. I remember a few words of advice from my Granddad....I'll start gambling when the bookies start to go out of business

Absolutely excellent. Another piece of potentially good news. Hopefully this is now the Eve of our club cutting ties with these gambling sponsors for good. People claimed that it would never happen. Keep shouting; MAKE it happen. This is our club! We can be better! #keepbangingthedrum

If we hadn't been taken over by religious folk then I doubt it would be happening.

Yep excellent. Another business going pop. And people losing their jobs. And unable to fulfil the monies owed to us and others and the financial impact of that.

Fully agree Cricketfield and the article does point out that we are sounding out the Asian market for a replacement sponsor

Im not sure how another potential £7.5m hole in our finances , on top of all the other massive financial hits we've taken, can be seen as " good news "

I read that as the sponsor was looking to sub let the shirt themselves. They were looking not the club.

Never understood the fascination with gambling sponsors.

Always makes me laugh that those that respond to tweets promoting them don’t realise that in doing so they are furthering the reach of the advert.

Also has said above, at this moment in time, this is anything but good news financially unless we can replace like for like with something everybody finds acceptable.

LoveBet are are part of the same company who own manBetX - who sponsor Wolves. Vivaro - also known as vBet also sponsor Portsmouth with other brands, such as M88.co.uk better known as Mansion, previously Spurs, Palace and Bournemouth, but now Bristol City. Laba360 was also under their umbrella too.

So I wonder if other clubs are looking to change too

I would never see anyone losing their job as “good news”. I just want us to do better as a club and people refuse to see that gambling is so heavily associated with mental health. What happened to banning in-game betting adverts? Have you noticed that they’ve started to creep back in? This because betting firms completely prey on the vulnerable. I know five people who are associated with the betting industry. Two have left the profession and don’t agree with the harm it’s causing; one doesn’t agree with me and two remain in the profession but don’t like the way things are heading. The stories they’ve told about luring in gamblers with incentives, even though they’ve capped their fronting or put time-outs on their account, are frightening.

It’s a good debate to have but sadly, there’s a core of fans that cannot make the connection between the over-saturation taking place and mental health.

I have challenged each of these people with the following when discussing Burnley’s relationship with gambling (I have also challenged two current employees of the club; one of who insists there’s ‘no harm in it’):

If a huge porn website offered a few £8 million per season, as opposed to our current £7.5 million shirt sponsorship, would you happily support the club in accepting the sponsorship and would you buy the shirt?

Betting and porn.... both can be ‘enjoyed’ by 18s and over, legally.

Neither should be ‘enjoyed’ by under 18s.

Both can lead to addiction and possibly (money loss).

Both can be damaging to relationships.

Both can be damaging to mental health.

The response, nine times out of ten is ‘absolutely not, they’re two totally different things (there’s ‘shame’ associated with porn) etc...’

People just don’t see it!!!

People used to have to go into town to place a bet; now they’re being almost forced to (see Ladbrokes officials on the upper Longside last season, literally pulling people on the shoulder, during conversations, telling people ‘You’re gonna have s bet today, aren’t you?’

It’s just not good enough. It needs to stop and we need to become a better and more ethical club for our future fans. I’m not saying people can’t have a bet, of course they can, but place it outside the ground....or if we have to go down this road, just rely on one sponsor.... (see the 21 different endorsements counted inside the ground last season during a single one minute period).

Remove the saturation; be better; it’s achievable.

As a mod, even though I’m pleased with the article, I have removed the piece, on legal grounds, as it shouldn’t be published for all of its only available for fans behind a paywall. Thank you.

Based on this thread, who would you like as a shirt sponsor.
None, Charity, big multinational? In the current world how about Pfizer?

Yes, this is the very response I expected. It’s the response I’m opposed to but get nine times out of ten. You’ve offered a response on an issue (porn) that I think can be damaging, just like gambling, but would be good if you could explain why? Yes, a strange example to use, but would appreciate you trying to make the comparison....

I think porn is a valid profession, so no shame for me, some of my friends here, male and female are current or former actors in the industry. Ive also done some location scouting for FakeTaxi / Fake Agent which is based here. Maybe the attitudes to it here has made me think more "european" about it.

Also, anyone who things most teenagers arent already well aware of it is frankly naiive.

There may be some people who got into financial trouble with porn, and the sites do need to be regulated to ensure revenge porn etc isnt allowed on their site, but in terms of overall impact, if its a straight choice between gambling or porn? No contest.

As an open question, i'd much rather TESLA orVodafone or the like, but i dont think they are paying 7.5 anytime soon....

Very unlikely - I believe the delay in getting the shirts out this season was because we were struggling to get last season's money from them. From what I hear it has been another poor shirt deal for us.

It's clearly something you feel passionate about so stick to your guns and continue to campaign against. Personally feel there should be some further controls on gambling but that would be best done through government and legislative reform.

Is that aimed at me, Burnley1989? Sorry if it’s not. I’ve deleted the Athletic Article as we’re not supposed to allow paywalled articles to be published. I even posted to own that. Sorry if I’m getting wires crossed.

Very unlikely - I believe the delay in getting the shirts out this season was because we were struggling to get last season's money from them. From what I hear it has been another poor shirt deal for us.
That would make a lot of sense.

I was giving the club pelters for that in the summer, but if that’s the case, I wish they’d just say “there’s been a manufacturing delay whilst we resolve a commercial issue” or such like. Don’t need to be specific, or breach any confidentiality, just explain there’s a challenge to overcome.

Aye, you would hope the new regime will see better communication

Can someone summarise the story? Does it say LoveBet haven’t paid for this season? So we’ve given them half a season for free? Or we have been paid but LoveBet are seeking to find an alternative sponsor to recover some of the fees? Or Jdrobbo has convinced AP to bin them off early? :D

I'd rather see pornhub on the front of our shrts than a gambling sponsor
Probably more appropriate that they sponsor West Ham.

It said that they have paid a large sum upfront, how much we don't know.

From memory, so could be wrong, it said they are in financial difficulty due to the pandemic; they have paid most of £7.5m upfront; and we are seeking an alternative sponsor.

If they’ve paid up front, can only imagine we’ve decided to go to market because the new owners are uncomfortable with the gambling angle, but that LoveBet have agreed to exit early if we can find one?

Fair play, if so.
