Far from pointless as far as Mike Garlick and the other shareholders are concerned.
This January Transfer thread would represent a decent little opening stand against India on Thursday

I’m not too concerned if we don’t make any signings today. I think we’ll have enough to stay up. However that’ll be two transfer windows just past without an addition to the first team. Some would argue that we haven’t signed a starting first teamer since 2017. They’ve left themselves with a huge task this summer.

How many do we really need though? 2 or 3 properly good signings would probably have us sorted out? I’d rather wait until summer if it means we can identify some better players for our team.nyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 9:48 amI’m not too concerned if we don’t make any signings today. Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Collins to be 4th choice centre half!? Seriously?
I think a certain Kevin Finbarr Long would have something to say about that. He loves that gig and won’t be giving it up without a fight. He’s a great lad as well. He doesn’t deserve to be upgraded to 3rd choice, that would be really harsh on him.

I always read these transfer threads but don't usually participate but I was wondering when did a major signing last break on one? It seems you may as well just make one a sticky for people to read as they always seem exactly the same..

When people say the take over was pointless, I'm struggling to understand that...
ALK didn't buy the club just to make signing in January, who is it pointless for? the fans? The comment just doesn't make sense at all

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
It’s a shame but it looks like we have more chance of signing Kelly Dalglish than King & Kenny
But in all seriousness, if one is going to Celtic because we are baulking at £10m, and the other is going to Southampton despite being rumoured to want to return to the NW (and almost certain to be on the bench at Soton) - it doesn’t really suggest anything has changed at the club.
I was hoping the new board would want to make an immediate statement to win the fans over, even if we overpaid for Kenny by a few million, it would make that statement, he is young, in a position where we have 2 thirtysomethings and where we aren’t the strongest.
There may of course be more to it, e.g. agents playing sillybuggers, but I still feel a bit disheartened

Right back, agreed - would have been a nice future proofing exercise but can wait till the summer. He probably wouldn’t have played much this season.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 9:37 amSo we haven't got a 4th choice centre half and a 3rd choice right back because we wouldn't pay £10 million and £9 million?
And even though we've bid for these players, we haven't got any money?
Never change lads, never change
I can’t agree on what would be the third choice centre back either (no way would Long be ahead of a £10-12m defender that isn’t Ben Gibson). I think that was a vital signing this window because of Tarkowski’s situation. He will be going in the summer, and six months to bed his replacement in learning the system and getting accustomed to the club sounds vital to me, as opposed to joining in the summer and being thrown straight into the fray alongside Mee from the outset. It also seems daft to me when we know we have a guaranteed £20m or so for Tarkowski coming (and know we must replace him) and a probable £8m coming for Gibson as well. If you know the money is coming, it’s not really a gamble is it?

"ALK didn't buy the club just to make signings in January"
Agreed, but there was a clamour among fans on the ALK takeover thread for the whole process to be completed before the 1st January so that they would be in place to provide financial backing in the January window. This was also reported in the national media, a report on the takeover in the Daily Mail during December 2020 commenting that extra backing in the transfer market would be available to SD if the deal was completed by 1st January.

Can’t argue with that, Jedi, although I’m sure someone will try. #whatifthatsourvaluation
Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
My own view us that the new owners are perhaps finding it more difficult than first realised. It's fast becoming a situation where if we don't pay the asking price, or as near to it we won't be bringing anyone in, especially recognised players. With our style of play and this is not a criticism of Dyche I'm sure that will put off some players. I think our future needs to be more towards youth at a lot less money, one I hoped was Davies at Preston specially at £2 mill but that's not going to happen now. If we can keep our current squad and avoid injuries we've a good chance of staying up, then rebuilding in summer.
Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
In my view if the finances are there (unlikely) then swapping Vydra for King is probably worth a shot. We saw yesterday that in a game where no one performed and Vydra got no service (albeit he also lacked the physicality needed) he was first to be hauled off. He will never be fully trusted by Dyche.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:30 amIn the gossip columns yesterday Watford & Bournemouth were wanting Vydra. King would be excellent here, would slot straight in to partner Wood upfront and give us pace movement and the ability to carry the ball through the middle of the pitch. I remember him playing for Basturds, he had Trippier on toast and theres not many times Iv seen that.

I love comments like "make a statement" and the suggestion we should over pay by a couple of million is a joke surely?
Anyone who watched the chairman of sunderland splash out millions on Grigg despite the manager and friends telling him not to do it because he felt pressured to make a statement and keep the fans happy.
If we dont sign someone i will be bitterly disappointed but not as disapointed as i was when we signed Wells. I said at the time we might as well set fire to the money in the centre circle.

That's it in a nutshell for me. I'm more than happy not be paying stupid, inflated prices for players at this stage and walking away if people are trying to fleece us, BUT everything revolves around our best 12/13 players remaining fit (ESPECIALLY Tarks and Mee) because I THINK we do have enough about us to stay up. However only a couple of key injuries would completely scupper us I fear.randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:39 am"If we can keep our current squad and avoid injuries we've a good chance of staying up, then rebuilding in summer."

But it always isit’s not really a gamble is it?
He's clearly not our first choice (thats still Worral) and he's not played a lot of games.
Would I rather bring in players now?
Of course!
But they are essentially cover or long term, and if the price is too high, then we probably shouldn't be paying it.
Just my two cents

Today could be a breaking day for our chairman on Twitter
He’s getting tagged in posts from “Champ Manager wannabes”asking why we haven’t paid the £7m for Kenny, £10m for Collins & why we couldn’t afford the £2m that Liverpool have paid for Davies or smashing our wage structure for King

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
That's all well and good, but the same was said last January and look what happened, covid struck.
And dont forget the money liked to go on holiday over the summer when the last lot were looking after it.
"We have loads of cash, and are well run" in April
" we have no money, vivid has struck" october transfer window
"We had 55m in cash reserves " in December
The convenience of how we forget where the check book is when the windows open is amazing.
I hope the new lot dont use the previous charlatans way of "doing business" ( or lack of it )

ALK bought us with a business plan that included making us more attractive internationally. To do that we need better players and need to play better football. If they’re not prepared to spend, even if it’s on players for the future, they won’t achieve their goal.

The January window is normally a really difficult time to sign players, so this window given everything that is going on makes it almost impossible.

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
I made the comment “make a statement” and what I mean by that is unlike Wells King is a proven PL player, and Kenny is a long term target (I would be amazed if Wells was). I assume Kenny is thought of having the potential of Tarks when we signed him, so again unlike Wells, meeting the asking price would not seem to be a bad move if in 3 years time he is worth double that price.steve1264b wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 10:58 amI love comments like "make a statement" and the suggestion we should over pay by a couple of million is a joke surely?

Any new company owner has to win over stakeholders early in their tenure, in this case that includes the fans and, most importantly, Dyche. The next window is 6 months away and if Dyche feels nothing will change he could easily go before then.
So I’m not criticising the new owners, that would be unfair at this stage, but it felt to me this was a perfect chance to tactically lay down a marker, though of course we do not know the facts.

So, what price do you expect will be quoted to us in the summer when players will be so much cheaper (allegedly) as we carry out our squad overhaul?
As I can recall players were still way out of our financial reach during the last summer window.
Mind you, with Tarks and Dwight expected to move on transfers will probably be financed from players sales rather than by the new owners.

Appreciating that we won’t be awash with available funds for players, I’d hoped, particularly with the current climate, that there would be a good few opportunities to take advantage of clubs in a far worse position.Granny WeatherWax wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 2:11 pmIts a rich premier league club trying to take advantage. Exactly, shop in a different market, but still hard work given current conditions eg - teams don't want to let teams go because of Covid and the schedule, can even scout players in this country, dyche's ultra specific requirements etc etc
