Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
Has our "famous" 7th position finish and what has happened since been mirrored by the current state of liverpool since their achievements of the last 3 years
Seems those achievements are quickly forgotten as a lack of investment in first team players over recent transfer windows comes home to roost
Becker bought July 2018
Robertson July 2017
van Dijk Jan 2018
Matip July 2016
Wijnaldum July 2016
Chamberlain August 2017
Fabinho May 2018
Keita June 2018
Shaqiri July 2018
Mane June 2016
Salah June 2017
Firmino 2016
Add to the above people like Origi and Milner
With the exception of maybe Alcantara, no starting players bought for almost 3 years and some have been there even longer
Yes they are at opposite ends of the league table to us, and still spent loads of cash, but both Carragher and Neville were yesterday pointing out that the lack of improving the starting eleven in recent years has gone a long way to explaining their current demise. Focussed in also on the fact that their starting eleven are playing most weeks because "squad" players are not at the same skill levels
The purse is clearly not full at Liverpool, and one would expect quite a few of theses players need to be moved on before further spending is allowed
Klopp is obviously displeased with the situation as could be Dyche
For Dyche, the situation may be seen by him as more long term in lack of funds, hence giving extended contracts to the likes of Long, JBG, Cork, Lowton, Barnes and in the case of Pieters the one year extension, because he doesn't see any improvements on such players being forthcoming as potential new signings
As good servants to the club these players are still appreciated, but if at the end of this season the only outgoings to reduce the wage bill will be the likes of Bardsley, Brady and Dunne will we have the cash spare (transfer fees and wages) to improve our starting eleven. I've left Tarks and Gibson out of the conversation as we will at least get money for them which will go towards their direct replacements
We are an ageing squad and some of those need replacing/improving on this summer
Other similarity between BFC and Liverpool is that both are now owned by Americans
Are these people more cautious with their money than other foreign owners who have taken clubs close to deep financial problems
I am using Liverpool as an example and sorry to all their fans, but I would not shed too many tears if you finished 5th

Cheers Jojo, I hadn't realised that they'd not improved their starting 11 much either, I suppose you could add their recent purchase of Ben Davies from the Nobbers as another one.

They got Thiago and Jota this season and signed Fabinho and Alisson for the 18/19 season so they only didnt sign any first team players one season (19/20) and they absolutely walked the league that year

Furthermore Liverpool losing Van Dijk is like us losing Mee. Both are irreplaceable.

Thiago is not right for their system. The same as Matic at ManU. He slows everything down when their success was based on speed of break and movement up front.
Jota had looked at good signing before his injury.

Re: Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
This is why football pundits are stupid.
They come along and tell us 6 teams can we the league. Then pick up the ones that are struggling for form. “Tottenham are a one man Harry Kane team”. “Liverpool haven’t improved their starting 11 for 3 years”.
Well why didn’t you say that when you said they could win it then?
Pundits easily forget what Klopp went out and did a few years ago. They were superb but weren’t winning. He sold Coutinho arguably his best player and bought VVD and Allison. Where can they actually improve for the way they play football? It’s alright saying their defence hasn’t been good enough, but any football team in the world without their first 2 or 3 CH would be considerably weaker.
Imagine the scenario at Burnley. Mee out, Tarkowski out, Long out, Dunne out, Westwood CH, Cork CH. It’s laughable at times the stick Klopp is getting. Over the past 3 years they’ve been incredible. Superb to watch, actually a joy to watch. Suddenly lost a bit of form and everyone jumps on them. Where was the stick for Pep and Man City last season? They lost the league by far more points than what Liverpool will do this season.

Liverpool are actually trying to run their club along many of the same financial protocols that Burnley did under Garlick, the numbers are significantly bigger and they have been hit by more significant pandemic impacted losses than us, they also have a repayment loan to service for the main stand redevelopment. The key for them is that they have financed squad development through selling talent at an astronomical price and the model relied on the big 2 Spanish clubs being solvent so they could be played off against each other which isn't happening for many reasons, that have been exacerbated by the pandemic.
On a side note: Given the regular outcry on here that Dyche doesn't have a budget, how many were surprised to learn that Klopp doesn't either and was regularly being met with a "no" to his requests. From my observations that financial practice is the norm in the Premier League.

Re: Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
Squad depth is the main difference between City and Liverpool at the moment.
City can lose key players and still look unbeatable. Liverpool look a mid-table side at best on current form.

Spot on.
Liverpool’s form since project restart with no fans has been significantly worse than the previous 18 months. It’s clearly having a bigger impact on them than other teams.
Liverpool’s net spend under Klopp has also been nowhere near that of United or City. Chelsea spent the best part of £300m in the summer and not exactly pulling up trees themselves.
You also have the likes of Salah and Mane who have been rumoured to have issues over their contracts.
But the biggest impact has to be their injuries in defence. VDV was the best defender in the world - losing him would impact any team in the world. But on top they have lost Gomez, Matip and Alisson has had 2 or 3 injuries too.
Not sure how anyone can conclude the likes of United or Spurs are in a better place - neither have managed to win the league or get anywhere near City or Liverpool in the last 2 or 3 years.
City have been good but that’s what spending a billion pounds on players gets you....and they still have not reached a CL final (let alone won one). A billion pounds buys you a huge squad where you have 2 or 3 internationals in every position. Since Covid and the heavy set of fixtures and higher number of injuries this has proved to be the deciding factor between them and Liverpool (especially bearing in mind they were already a very strong side when going neck and neck with Liverpool)

Re: Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
Didn’t Diogo Jota cost £40m + ?
He was on fire before he was injured a every bit a potential replacement for any of the front 3.

Re: Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
Yep - think the transfer was quoted between £40m and £45m and his form before the injury was fantastic.Cubanclaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 3:04 pmDidn’t Diogo Jota cost £40m + ?

Firmino’s form has been patchy and as important player as he has been for Liverpool Jota provides quality competition for him and for Salah and Mane. Origi and all the other squad players are nowhere near Salah, Mane etc so losing Jota has been significant.
And let’s bear in mind that Salah, Mane, Firmino were all bought for a total of around £90m. That’s less than City paid for their 2 right backs, or around the same as United paid for their 2 full backs, or Chelsea for their 3 pretty average left backs etc etc !!
Re: Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
City had injuries at the start of the season and were complaining about it. They were also inconsistent - gave us our usual thrashing but lost 5-2 at home to Leicester.

Re: Liverpool doing a "Burnley"
all very true about liverpools injuries but lets be honest,if you are Liverpool then not beating Fulham, West Brom, Burnley, Brighton and Newcastle is not good enough even with a few injured players.
