Sir Bobby Robson. One of the Good Guys.
Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
It’s rare as hens teeth for fans of other clubs to all like the manager of other clubs. I’ve not heard one person have a bad word to say about Sir Bobby Robson.
Everything you hear said by others, every time you saw him interviewed or simply as a pundit, he just came across as a lovely man and a gentleman.
There aren’t enough people like he was in the world.

Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
The only time I've heard people against him were the Newcastle fans who booed him towards the end of his time there and even they regret that.
Apart from that he's been universally admired/loved the rest of the time.

Would have been great if he had won the World Cup in Italy.

Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
Some clearly had little respect from him. I read this just yesterday from Sir John Hall who owned Newcastle at the time.
Hall said: "It was a shame what some of the players did to him. In some ways, he lost the dressing room because of some young players who treated him with disrespect and it caused a lot of problems for him and the club.
"I'll never forgive those players - I look at them today, pontificating on television, they've probably learned their lessons but they were young people earning good salaries thinking who is this old man trying to teach us football.
"But Bobby knew everything. He was a fanatic for the game. He lived for it. It was in the blood. It was just disappointing when it all went wrong."
I was curious to know who these young players were who are today pontificating on television. Alan Shearer was there at the time but he wasn't a young player by then and I don't think anyone has more respect for Sir Bobby than Shearer so I'll rule him out immediately. I took a look at their squad list at the time and the only names I could see there who now pontificate are Craig Bellamy and Jermaine Jenas.
Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
My dad was 4th official on the Turf in a friendly against Newcastle. Robson spent the vast majority of the game just talking to him about Burnley and football rather than coach from the side. He was very impressed with Ian Cox.

100% that’s Jenas.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 11:06 amSome clearly had little respect from him. I read this just yesterday from Sir John Hall who owned Newcastle at the time.

He had high hopes for him because Jenas was Forest captain at 18/19. There was a story I heard about Jenas wanting to go back to an away ground because he’d left an expensive diamond earring in the dressing room and Robson wouldn’t turn the coach round. I can’t remember the specifics but I remember reading Robson was really upset at the way Jenas spoke to him.

Just to correct you and avoid litigation from Jermaine Jenas, it was Kieron Dyer who left his £65k ear rings in the WBA Dressing room

The way he was treated by the press, when he was England boss was pathetic.
I shouldn't really speak ill of the dead, but Brian Woolnough was chief culprit. A proper guttersnipe hack.

When Sir Bobby passed, it felt like it was the end of an era in English football... he was sort of the last of a type of kind of figure who everyone respected.
I never met him, but he genuinely did seem the type who would talk your ear off about football because you know he just loved it.

Is it really right that, at the same time building up and lauding one individual to an almost saintly level, we seek out some other individuals, people that we don’t know, and we speculate and virtually pass judgement on them? And this, about events that may or may not have happened many years ago, related by a possibly unreliable third party.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 11:06 amI was curious to know who these young players were who are today pontificating on television. I’m afraid this kind of thing encapsulates the problem with social media.

Not for a period in the 80’s as England manager he wasn’t.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 10:57 amThe only time I've heard people against him were the Newcastle fans who booed him towards the end of his time there and even they regret that.

Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
And everyone turned on him ahead of the 1990 World Cup because he'd already taken a job elsewhere yet the FA had already told him he was being replaced as England manager.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 1:53 pmNot for a period in the 80’s as England manager he wasn’t.
I think everyone grew to like him in later years with his enthusiasm and passion for the game. I read his book a few years ago. It includes some amusing stories about the Ipswich chairman Sir John Cobbold and the only two people he was only critical of were Alf Ramsey and Emlyn Hughes.

Absolutely this. The ‘88 Euros didn’t help where we were beyond woeful. He certainly had a bashing from the press around this time.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 1:53 pmNot for a period in the 80’s as England manager he wasn’t.

Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
I recall the press conference when they took over and he didn't look a very well man but the sight of him at St. James' Park for that charity game just days before he passed away was haunting. Shocking to see him so poorly.
Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
I read recently he wanted Jose Mourinho at Newcastle and promised him he’s step aside after 2 years for him to take over. Jose declined saying he knew how much the club meant to him and he’d never leave unless sacked.

Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
Mourinho idolised him because he'd done so much for him. Every year he donates something incredible for the auction for Sir Bobby's charity.
Re: Kieron Dyer talking about Sir Bobby Robson
I've been fortunate enough to meet Sir Bobby twice and never have met a more genuine & humble man in Football.

There have been people in football I've been very fortunate to meet over the years but I have to say I regret never having had the opportunity to meet Sir Bobby.

I do recall JJ speaking very well of Sir Bobby. He was grateful that Sir Bobby had brought him to Newcastle while still a youngster, but also said they had a bit of a special relationship because they shared the same birthday.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Feb 19, 2021 11:06 am

The only special relationship I'm aware Craig Bellamy had was with an eight iron.
