Souness!!!
Souness!!!
Graham Souness ripping into the naff football in the prem.
Love it. Dead right.
British game traditionally tough and uncompromising and as our Sean would say....honest.
Now refs blow for any squeal and fall.
Hope the orem realise that was our unique selling point before it is too late.

the beginning of the end was when footballers started turning up wearing gloves.

Souness and Roy Keane say it how it is. They don't mess about.

Re: Souness!!!
It was actually when some of the players from the continent turned up and the definition of 'character' changed.

Re: Souness!!!
In my world, you fall over when you can no longer stand up. You don’t move when you are hurt. If a player is rolling about it is cheating. If you could have played on and don’t it is cheating. Referees are there to see shirt pulls and late tackles and have VAR to double check every decision... let’s have less decisions and more football.

Re: Souness!!!
Exactly. Remember when you had to be physically brought down for a foul. Not this “there was contact, so had a right to go down” sh1te.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 2:29 amIn my world, you fall over when you can no longer stand up. You don’t move when you are hurt. Can’t say characters like zola. Bergkamp. Henry. Asprilla. Cantona. Vieira. Ginola. Di canio changed it for the worse.Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 11:31 pmIt was actually when some of the players from the continent turned up and the definition of 'character' changed.

Having popped both achilles tendons while playing, I can safely say that this bit isn't necessarily true. It may be if you break a bone in which case it probably hurts to move but when you badly sprain an ankle or ping a tendon it's another matter.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 2:29 amYou don’t move when you are hurt. Rolling over and over though is completely unnatural though. Writhing, thumping the ground, holding the popped item and swearing a lot are all to be expected.

Much as I like Souness, he’s starting to reach his sell by date now. Too many “in my day” rants.

100% this. He’s not a great pundit at all, provides no real tactical insight and just falls back into cliched, ‘back in my day’ rants which gets the hits on social media I guess. Keane is the same.PremierLeagueClass wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 8:49 amMuch as I like Souness, he’s starting to reach his sell by date now. Too many “in my day” rants.

All I can say is when I turn on to watch a game, and sourness and Roy Keane are the pundits I’m more than happy

Well I thought it had started to look iffy, when Burnley played in their stripey pyjamas, in that 'original 12' picture!boatshed bill wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 11:01 pmActually it was shin pads, followed by long sleeves.![]()

I remember when Jurgen Klinsmann arrived, a notorious diver.Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 11:31 pmIt was actually when some of the players from the continent turned up and the definition of 'character' changed.
He didn't dive. When asked, he said that he came to the Prem because it was an honest league and fair play still counted. He wanted to embrace that, not abuse it.
Re: Souness!!!
I headed the pavement, with my face, last week. I laid very still for some time, clutching the side of my face, which was telling me is was hurt, in no uncertain terms!timshorts wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 8:22 amHaving popped both achilles tendons while playing, I can safely say that this bit isn't necessarily true. Wriggling was not an option!

Re: Souness!!!
Says it like it is, or was.
Probably too late to recover it for football now. Pretending to be hurt when you're not is simply cheating but, the authorities have no will to stamp out cheating.
It would be an interesting stat to see which teams, and which players within teams, spend the most time rolling about on the floor for nothing. My guess is that we'd be pretty low down that league.

Re: Souness!!!
Since the Lacazette incident the other week. There have been pundits calling it out a bit more. The Son incident against Utd was also put in the spotlight. The fact that more pundits and managers are calling it means that people like Dyche who have been calling out for years have now got some well needed back up.
As for the assertion that the character of the game changed when all the fancy foreigners came here is nonsense. The greatest diver in English football was Francis Lee probably only matched in the modern era by Jamie Vardy.

Re: Souness!!!
I don't want football to go back to the days of 'assassins' - the likes of Ron Harris, Norman Hunter and don't forget, Roy Keane. Quality players need to be allowed to play and we now have the pitches where they can do this and the Laws and practices to stop it.
Of course I do not like cheating in any form which is perhaps what they are talking about?

Re: Souness!!!
Francis Lee indeed the greatest of Divers..... I think your mistaking Vardy ....with Salah of Liverpool. I think Jamie Vardy is a very honest Footballer tbf.MrTopTier wrote: ↑Sat Apr 24, 2021 11:09 amSince the Lacazette incident the other week. There have been pundits calling it out a bit more. I thought Hutchinson was an excellent diver, used to tap his own back heel to create some noise and then went down like a stone
