Knee Injury...
For the Medical folk on here...a Week last Sunday my Left knee blew up like a Balloon after a few mile walking. "A few days prior to this walk I kind of jolted my back mainly.. and knee stepping off what was an unexpected double kerb...." Went to the Hospital on the Bank Holiday Monday and was asked a few questions with a bit of fettling around the knee thrown in. Diagnosis some kind of tissue damage and given Pain killers. Over a week later still in a Lot of pain.... not able to sleep. Tried ice .. couple of days resting the injury...put a knee brace/ support on which to some extent helps. But I'm still left in pain and Limping.

sorry that sounds glib, ^^^^
Rest, rest rest. Raise and keep weight off it,
but keep it moving a little.
Go to Doc's - could be cartilage.

Re: Knee Injury...
I wrecked my knee ignoring an issue. The cartilage.
I found two pillows under the knee at least I could sleep.
But expect pain if you move over...
I ended up in a cast for 6 weeks (this was many years ago).

Re: Knee Injury...
I’ve done the stepping off the kerb thing. In my case it made a disc swell, trapping a nerve. My body skeleton /stance naturally adjusting to compensate the (at this point not known) swollen disc then made my knee blow up. Not saying this is the case but something to consider? Chiropractor worked a few sessions on the disc issue and everything corrected and balanced itself.

I played in a game of football in January, and 10 minutes in I stretched for the ball and felt something at the top of my calf. When I turned around to get back my knee just buckled, it was agony. It swelled up like a balloon, painkillers didn’t even touch it. After a scan on the knee they said I had torn the calf muscle right where it attaches behind the knee and had torn the miniscus. 4 months later and I’m still in pain, so I feel for you tim—noone.

Re: Knee Injury...
The old miners used to use comfrey leaves as a poultice on broken and damaged limbs
You boil up the leaves and when slightly cool plasterer them over the knee using a crepe bandage and cling film to keep the mixture in place.I injured an ankle in similar fashion and couldn't stand on it.Two days later, I could run on it.The old timer next door to me aged 85 recommended this cure and called it Knitbone which I discovered is a West Lancs dialect name for comfrey. It grows everywhere on the canal banks and wild in the country.

Have you bought a magic sponge? Buy one on Amazon, put water in a bucket and dip your magic sponge in and apply to the injury - always worked wonders as a kid.

Jimmy Greaves once said that the magic sponge was dipped in iced water and the physio would put it down your shorts. Any pain around the rest of the body was quickly forgotten.
Maybe this is an option Tim ?

You need a scan, I did similar a few years ago and discovered I had a slight tear which didn't need surgery but with heat/ice treatments plus exercise settled down but it took weeks.

Sounds awful tim. The only suggestion I can offer is to speak with the Doctor again and explain the pain is excruciating. I'd try and push them into offering you an x -ray, the main thing is to keep at them. Good luck I hope you get it sorted.

I'm thinking it's the meniscus to...but I thought it could be a fracture the longer the pain as gone on. I'm needing another opinion at the hospital I'm guessing. The not sleeping doesn't help. Re: Knee Injury...
Had an op on my meniscus last Thursday after feeling a burning sensation whilst crouching at work, followed by a few days of it locking unexpectedly and pain whenever I put any kind pressure through the joint, such as getting up off the floor or going up stairs, plus lots of swelling.
The surgeon explained that I had torn the cartilage on the outside of the joint, and the swelling on the inside of the knee was the synovial fluid protecting the ACL and other ligaments.
I was released from hospital on a day case, without crutches, and was able to hobble to the car when picked up. Any swelling around the cut sites has all but gone, with only tenderness where they were messing around. Absolutely no pain whatsoever from the area which was damaged. In a couple of weeks I'll be back running and gym work to lose the chub I've accumulated in the last 3 months!!!
Get it checked out asap, as this kind of injury can really impact on your activities later on in life with arthritis etc

I had a really painful shoulder a couple of weeks ago Tim and was agony trying to sleep.
Pharmacist recommended a tube of Voltarol cream which you apply 4 times a day.It really helped me and eased the pain a lot.

Re: Knee Injury...
Watch out with the painkillers, Tim.
the swelling is protecting the damaged tissue.
Painkillers allow you to do what you shouldn't without the warning which pain is.

Re: Knee Injury...
ClaretFelix, can I ask what procedure you had? My doctor told me they used to go in with an arthroscope to asses the joint, but with it being the miniscus they just let get better on its own.ClaretFelix wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:23 amHad an op on my meniscus last Thursday after feeling a burning sensation whilst crouching at work, followed by a few days of it locking unexpectedly and pain whenever I put any kind pressure through the joint, such as getting up off the floor or going up stairs, plus lots of swelling.

Re: Knee Injury...
Yep, arthroscopy. Two tiny cuts either side, they went in, sorted the tear and also smoothed some of the damaged cartilage on the back of my knee cap.
Obviously had x-ray and MRI first where he was able to identify the tear. I did the ACL in the same knee 12 years ago, and the screw from that is slowly making its way to the surface, so the surgeon checked everything was fine with that whilst they were in there.

Re: Knee Injury...
I had the same operation as Felix, 7 weeks ago now. I was told that the meniscus rarely repairs itself when you get to a certain age due to the lack of blood supply to it. I had the torn part of the meniscus removed and the the knee bone and cartilage smoothed.
I would suggest you push your GP to refer you to an orthopaedic consultant and push for an x-ray and then MRI scan. It’s easy to be fobbed off and told to rest but from experience mine only worsened over time, even with rest.
In terms of recovery I started with some gym sessions 2 weeks ago and went on my first outdoor run last weekend, 6 weeks after the operation. Hoping to play football in a week or two.

My advice would be to ask the GP to refer me to a consultant privately, that is the only way you are going to get the ball rolling, if not you will be waiting months all for a couple of 100 quid.

Re: Knee Injury...
Badly damaged my knee years ago playing football. Doctor at A&E diagnosed cartilage damage. Said it would be ok in a month. Six weeks later I was still limping so booked a physio appt. He worked out it was badly sprained ligaments and gave me a strengthening program over 8 weeks. Mainly involved stepping up on a single stair and balancing on one leg. It certainly worked. I'd say a physio will get to the problem with more detail than your GP.

I have paid out around 3k on private jobs on the knee and the last op I had was on the NHS to clear out the crap the private surgeon left in

definitely look to go private if you can afford it given the huge and inevitable backlogs in elective care for the next few years due the pandemic.

Re: Knee Injury...
If that is the case you may have a tear in your quadricep tendon which pain killers won’t touch. Physio is the only way forward. If your kneecap is lower than it should be then it may be a ruptured quadricep tendon which will require surgery.

Re: Knee Injury...
Surgeons who work privately also work NHS. It was just one of those things and it certainly wasn't ineffective as he repaired the torn cartlidge
What you need is a scan and to get it you will need to pay, otherwise you will have to wait months going through the NHS.
In my experience the only thing a phyisio does is take your money of you, they have ripped me off plenty of times and I personally wouldn't pay them with washers.
Now an Ostepath is a different ball game I have used them in the past for back and knee problems and they have worked magic

If I had the money I'd definitely do this. Tore acl years ago, took about 6 months for it to be diagnosed correctly with NHS. About 2 years in total for it to be fixed and running again. Even then I only got to about 70% flexibility of what it was before, never played 11 a side again. Move on 12 years, the knee is knackered, I've not been able to run properly for years, had a couple of MRIs, tried physio, surgeon reckons it's fine or at least not bad enough to do anything with so they won't do an arthroscopy or anything until I try physio again for months. It took me about 8 months to get this opinion from a surgeon albeit covid obviously hasn't helped. I can't even walk down the stairs properly atm. I'm in my 30s. If I had the money I wouldn't think twice!

Re: Knee Injury...
In my experience with a significant knee injury the leg muscle doesn't take very long to shut down and start to waste, and to attempt straight leg raise too early will cause significant pain and put your recovery way back, I had a ruptured acl and osteochondral fracture at the edge of my femur into the knee joint. My advice tm would be for you to go private and get diagnosed, I spent £90 doing so, it was the best £90 I've ever spent because at least I got a diagnosis, the week after I was admitted for arthroscopy, which was done as an NHS patient because my surgeon gave me the option to transfer back. Had I not have taken that decision to pay privately I'm sure I'd still have been waiting, simply because the route through your gp is first to let it settle down, rest ice compress exercise etc, "xray" which doesn't identify ligament injuries, it will only show significant fracture, (in my case mine was missed because it was hidden on the underside of my femur) and also the gp will usually suggest physio, all this can take months unfortunately. The problem is that the knee joint is a very complex thing, lots of little ligaments, major ligaments, tendons and obviously the tibial and femural joints meet up, which are covered by articular cartilage and meniscular protection in between, of which you may have a tear. Hope this he you make a decision tm and good luck with your recovery if it turns out to be serious.
