We’ve all got Wood
Fifty of the very best from our superb, Kiwi, centre forward. An absolute pleasure to see him pull on a Burnley shirt. A very, very intelligent footballer, who continues to get better and better whilst at the club. He scores goals!
Here’s to the next fifty, Chris! Keep enjoying your football.

Some great goals there.
WIth both his head and feet.
Proving to be an integral member of the team
and on reflection extremely difficult to mark.

Let's hope the form continues from the start of next season, then he might have 100 goals for Burnley this time next year.

He’s rapidly closing in on 50 premier league goals. He’s in great company there and he looks like he’ll grab quite a few more! I suspect he’ll be our leading scorer in the premier league for a very long time!

To put his massive achievements into perspective, he is the first Claret to score 44 league goals in the top flight since Frank Casper.
He is now on 46, just another 32 to go to catch Willie irvine.

I’ve been a huge fan of wood for a long time. But nobody can argue he (and we) hasn’t performed even better since Vydra has come in.

As stated on another thread today, the points per game are worse with Vydra in the team than out of it this season. That's no criticism, just a fact.

All I have seen is posts praising both and saying what a good strike partnership. Wood is clearly our best striker but has also clearly benefitted from playing with somebody dragging defenders everywhere.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:35 pmOr many just appreciate both?

Willie was beyond a bit special - goodness knows how many goals he would have scored had he not got that injury at Everton.ClaretLoup wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 10:28 pmTo put his massive achievements into perspective, he is the first Claret to score 44 league goals in the top flight since Frank Casper.

I was a bit unsure when we signed Wood but, as Neville said on Monday, he's a better player than I thought he was. Watching that video too, lots of different types of goals.

Thanks JDRobbo for exhibiting this amazing collection of goals and reminding us of what a great striker we have in CW. The video also illustrates the contribution of other players, including Ashley Barnes who seems to be the forgotten man at the moment. His goal ratio in the PL is good too.

VAR decision just in...... they were all offside.
Love the headed 3rd against Villa, so difficult when the ball is curling away from goal and you have to adjust to head it.

£15M was a lot of money for us at the time, he's proved to be an absolute bargain though, outscoring £30M forwards in that time.

Great watch, thanks for posting. The thing that stood out for me, other than the quality of the goals, was the important timing in the game. How many ‘ and Chris Wood makes it 1-0 to Burnley ‘did we hear or ‘that’s the equaliser for Burnley from Chris Wood’. This player does not score consolation goals.

Re: We’ve all got Wood
To be fair most of his criticism has been warranted. He had an awful start this season and took some time to get firing. Dyche kept faith in him more than he would perhaps do with our other strikers.
He's also pretty limited outside of scoring goals. His hold up play is generally poor and something even Dyche has said he needs to improve but at the end of the day we have a team full of limited players and we make the most of everyone's strengths including his.
If he was a better all round player he wouldn't be playing for us.

Re: We’ve all got Wood
Very little of his criticism has been warranted. Some people's expectations are way to high, and there are some who don't rate him. You cannot be a pretty limited player and score double figure premier league goals for 4 consecutive seasons, it is an impossibility.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 6:51 amTo be fair most of his criticism has been warranted. AS for his all round game, e's very good in the air, win's flick ons to get us up the pitch. You can play into him, and his hold up play is decent. He has enough pace to run in behind, and is strong in the channels, giving us a base to set up from. His movement in and around the box is exceptional - top 10 strikers in the premier league exceptional, and his finishing is very good. The best all round striker I have seen at Burnley in my lifetime, and he's been generally outstanding since day 1. Results at the end of the season are what matter, not kneejerk hissy fits during a relatively short lean spell.

Re: We’ve all got Wood
Wood has been in a rich vein of form recently scoring 8 goals over the last 8 matches.
If he had been scoring at that rate throughout the season he would now be a leading candidate for the PL Golden Boot.
But clearly he is not, as up until the end of February we were among the lowest scorers in the PL with only Sheffield United scoring fewer goals.

Well put, Dan.
Re: We’ve all got Wood
And even during his lean spell he was putting up good numbers in terms of shots and expected goals. The upturn in goals scored was almost inevitable and entirely predictable. It's also unlikely to be related to the identity of his strike partner.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 8:56 amVery little of his criticism has been warranted. I'm guessing you glossed over comparing his recent record to earlier in the season then?dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 8:56 amResults at the end of the season are what matter, not kneejerk hissy fits during a relatively short lean spell.
Personally I didn't find the criticisms knee jerky or hissy fits. He had a time this season where he wasn't up to scratch. He mentioned it himself in the recent post match interview.
His hold up play is 'something he needs to work on' -words of our manager, not me. But you can certainly see what Dyche sees when he says this.
Your points kinda contradict one another. First you say people expect too much, then that he's not a limited footballer. As said already if he didn't have his limitations he wouldn't be playing for us. Your opinion on here will always be liked because to many Burnley fans a player can do no wrong.
I don't personally sit in camp delusion and will support our players despite knowing their shortfalls. Not sure why you've turned this into a ******* contest. I'm not knocking Wood and think he's done brilliantly to turn things round this season. I was just highlighting that the criticisms were definitely warranted, and some even come from our manager himself.
You mustn't say things like that. Don't take those tinted glasses off.

Re: We’ve all got Wood
Wood’s scoring record in the Premier League is fantastic
Chelsea’ s leading scorer has 6 goals this season and they sit in the top 4 .
Wood has missed games this season also.

Keep your knickers on, nobody's turned it into a asterixing competition, whatever that is it's just a debate. Recent record is part of a season's work. As I said, no knee-jerk reactions, just an assessment of the season's work. He still had brilliant movement to create chances early in the season, he still worked hard, he still did plenty of elements of his job really well. Now he's doing all elements of his job really well.
I didn't hear any criticism from Dyche, have you got examples? I heard him give a pep talk about him playing hard, when he was at the top of the game, to ensure he wasn't going to rest on his laurels. I suspect with his brilliant man management, he knows how to get the best out of Chris wood.
My points don't contradict, if you think Chris Wood is a limited footballer, then your expectations are too high. The list of players scoring double figures in the last 4 seasons is
-Chris wood
-Harry kane
-Mohammed Salah
-Heung Min Son
-Alexandre Lacazette
-Jamie Vardy
You can't be in that group if you're limited.
As for Ings, he clearly was a very good player. In my opinion Wood has done better for Burnley than Ings did. He offers more in this Burnley team, than Ings did in the Burnley team he was in. That's just personal choice, I'm not going to argue with anybody who has a different view on that, as it's just opinion.
Hope this doesn't cause any further offence, or meltdown.

An amazing achievement by CW given that he has spent large parts of those 4 seasons "feeding off scraps", as they say in the sports media
