Worst/best accent
Worst/best accent
Currently holidaying in Elmer on the south coast (next to Bognor) and it’s been swamped by cockney wide boys with horrendous tattoos and even worse accent. Jesus Christ it’s unbearable got to be up there with the worst accent.
The best is Geordie and Irish
The worst-
Cockney
Brummie
Scouse

Worst? Scouse by a country mile. Followed by Brum, Cockerknee, Leeds (yorks) and Naaaaaaaaarrrrrrccccchhhhhh.
Comedic effect? West Country. Still laugh when I hear it....
Best? Ours. Geordie is good and Northern Irish (especially on the ladies)

Are there any cockneys left in London. Apart from Danny Dyer that is. Never hear one on the media channels. Hear London accents but they aren't cockney.Inchy wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 6:10 pmCurrently holidaying in Elmer on the south coast (next to Bognor) and it’s been swamped by cockney wide boys with horrendous tattoos and even worse accent. In general I love accents. They define Britain.

North Derbyshire then; it took a bit of getting used to when we lived in Chesterfield for a while, I didn't mind it so much from the lasses, but I wasn't keen on the lads calling me duck.
The Black Country and Brummie accents (Yam Yams and Yow Yows) seem to grate on everyone, but the other one that I dislike particularly is that of the ladies in County Durham, though I'm fine hearing it from the blokies.

Re: Worst/best accent
I've lived in Birmingham now for 20 years. Still got my Burnley lilt but my wife and kids are all Brumies. To be honest the Birmingham accent isn't too bad, I think most people confuse a Birmingham accent with a Black Country accent. Walsall, Wolverhampton folk from the Black Country are very different sounding to a Brummie.

I like the scouse accent of Holly Johnson but the Jamie Carragher scouse is like fingernails down a blackboard.
Is there any reason for the difference?

Re: Worst/best accent
It's not just the accents. It's the way people string words together. i.e. Steve McMananaman as a football pundit, ' he's went early'. This just grates with me. I think he was trying to say that the player had made his move too soon, But 'he's went early'. Now come on.

That would be Alfreton, Ripley and along the Erewash Valley. Further north around Chesterfield it’s just “duck” without the “me” which I don’t mind but” mah duck “ is strangely annoying.

Brummies always sound as though they're just about to yawn. Think about it
The Brum accent is the only British accent that is said to be in a minor key.
You didnt know that did you.

I don't think it's just London or Greater London, it's all over the place now. Crap music and Americanisms are to blame.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 11:13 pmtheres a peculiar london offshoot, the type popular with youth culture. It's not accent related, but the amount of folk (usually under 30 years old) asking.... "can I get" at a shop/pub etc is getting beyond a joke.
You can't 'get' anything, because you don't f***ing work here.
Re: Worst/best accent
Scouse without doubt the worst. It really grates. Sad to say as a northerner I am not keen on any northern accent. Hate that hybrid accent in and around London 'innit like bruv'.
Having lived in Bucks. I find the accent's around Bucks, Oxfordshire, Berkshire most bearable.
Special word for the proper Wolverhampton accent. I met a bloke who spoke proper Yam Yam in Blackpool a few years back. They don't even arrange words in a sentence like everybody else. It went something like 'Ahhhh, wasn't it, lovely walk I had, weather am ahhh'. It grated after a while but for the comedic affect of winding up my Welsh mate it was bearable.
Nod to the accent up in Inverness and further north towards Thurso/Scrabster. Talked to a lovely wee lass at the ferry terminal with the loveliest accent. 'Ayee, yae need tae go doon tae that lane'

Re: Worst/best accent
For me Female, softly spoken Southern Irish, East Coast Scottish and Geordie are the most easy on the ear.
The worst and most grating are Brummie, West Coast Scottish and Home Counties/Cockney.
I'm sorry but Lancashire folk sound a bit dumb

Re: Worst/best accent
Love the Nottinghamshire accent (e.g. Flip in Made in England) mainly because unlike most accents it is really hard to mimic.
Worst is got to be the London accent where you get a young lad from Kingston SW London trying to sound like he is from Kingston Jamaica!
