Ollie Robinson
Suspended from all international cricket pending an investigation. Hardly surprising but I feel this story could run on and on and on.

Usual story of somebody sitting on it until he’s had a bit of success. Why not bring it out earlier??

Re: Ollie Robinson
Sad people digging out past silliness to try and bring down people who have achieved something in the present day.
I'm 71 and I cringe at some of the things I got up to 16-23. I'm very sympathetic towards Ollie Robinson but feel some repulsion towards the people who dig out dirt on young people who have moved on to some fame and left their indiscretions behind.
Authorities have to "make a gesture" I guess but hopefully Robinson's current character is what matters.

It won't run on and on. He's been suspended, then probably banned (a ban which he will have served while suspended) and that will be it, done and dusted.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 9:05 pmSuspended from all international cricket pending an investigation. Unless he is guilty of any further indiscretions in the future.

Why haven’t they been investigating this during the test? It should all be sorted by now. He’s been our best bowler so let’s take him out the team while we pontificate over some lunches.

Re: Ollie Robinson
A joke really. I wonder if those who dug up the messages, those in the press that published the story, those that have suspended him and those who are defending the decision have lived perfect lives with no indiscretions?

I’d bet that if you looked at what comedians were pedalling 10 years ago edgy or otherwise I’d be surprised if those sort of jokes weren’t in their repertoire. More a showing off/education/growing up incident for me

We got to distinguish between what is serious and what isn’t serious . I think you have failed on this occasion
I’m aware there will be geeks out there happy to say what Robinson did was inexcusable whatever age he was. Geeks

Re: Ollie Robinson
I believe the suspension is whilst there is an investigation. What he did was wrong and had he done the tweets last week I would have been fully supportive of banning him for a significant period of time if not indefinitely.
But he was a relative kid when he did it and he has said he does not hold those views today and all we can do is believe that. Him being dropped from the second test and some form of diversity programme would be a suitable punishment for me

Re: Ollie Robinson
If the powers that be were so incensed at such a terrible evil, why did they wait until the match finished before suspending him.
Are they hypocrites or just afraid of the criticism they would have copped had they done so?
If this sort of persecution has become the daily norm then It's high time Fred Trueman's record was expunged after his "Pass t'salt, Gunga Din" comment.

It's unfortunate that the old farts on the ECB board are too old to have been on social media in their youth, then people could trawl through their historical posts.

You're probably confusing the ECB with the MCC but it's a simple enough mistake to make. We have to accept that we are living in a completely different world now where news organisations, advertisers and sporting bodies are tying themselves in knots trying to demonstrate that they are diverse and inclusive.

Re: Ollie Robinson
I hope we also come to accept that singular actions or stupid errors of judgement don't represent the character of a complex and evolving person. A human, who by nature makes mistakes and learns from them. Advertisers in particular are just as guilty of historically portraying men and women or particular cultures or races in a way that reinforces age old stereotypes for instance. They just move with the zeitgeist and pretend they always had the values that none of them did. Individuals don't have that luxury in a world that scrutinises individuals merely to point score, not for progress sake. Thankfully attitudes are changing towards race, ethnicity and sexuality, that's great, but at the same time there are a lot of people pretending to be holier than thou, willing to hang others on "crimes" they no doubt committed in some shape or form during their lives. It doesn't move us forward to hang anyone who steps off the mark slightly, it moves us backward. Why, because it gives actual bigots ammunition to proclaim that those who don't share their beliefs a defence. I look back on instances like Danny Baker getting fired and cringe. One what I believe to be the honest mistake of a man who clearly isn't racist, career on radio gone.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 8:10 amWe have to accept that we are living in a completely different world now where news organisations, advertisers and sporting bodies are tying themselves in knots trying to demonstrate that they are diverse and inclusive.
Things like this with ollie are even worse given his age , so while I'm glad he's sorry for what he said that should be the end of it. It is in no shape or form a mistake that should derail his career or be a judgement on his whole character

I'd have thought 'old farts' would take to complete opposite decision to be honest and made him captain for "sticking it up the fuzzy wuzzies" or something like that.claretandy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 1:49 pmWith the decision that they've made, by definition, they are old farts, chump.

Re: Ollie Robinson
If you start drawing lines for limitation for time-limiting not being punished for posting that sort of thing then you'll set yourself up to fail.
How long ago is permissible to write offensive stuff, 2 years, 5 years...?
What if the next offender is only 2 days shy of the line? Or just 2 day over it. There will be a huge deal made of it and you'll end up pushing the line about.
I'm amazed that well-known people aren't having agents trawling through their historical social media presence deleting anything that could land them in hot water.
I wrote some horrible stuff online in my teens but even as a non-famous person, I've gone back and deleted it all. Potential employers etc can and will go through your social media.

Tweet from 1939: I say, old chap. Those Tweets are now ancient history, and after all, it was just a bit of bantering, or maybe I was hacked or something. Right, where's my uniform and valet.

I agree - Having an agent to control your past and current online presence is fairly common practice in the corporate world. For some reason it’s bypassed the sporting world.Falcon wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 2:17 pmIf you start drawing lines for limitation for time-limiting not being punished for posting that sort of thing then you'll set yourself up to fail.
