Middle class idiots going on holiday
Anyone else find it hilarious to see these clowns get hit with extra charges for flights etc when the rules change on them in mid holiday?
Just read about some "Manager" and her kids (Indi and Fleur for god's sake).
Anyone choosing to risk it at this moment gets no sympathy.
No one is that desperate for some sunshine.

Is your post merely aimed at the middle classes, or is it extended to the 'working class" as well.
As someone who worked all my life in schools, I can assure you that names such as Indi and Fleur, are as often as not associated with some of the poorest families.

No sympathy for anyone trying to get back, stuck in queues or catching something by travelling abroad. They knew the risks before they went.

Re: Middle class idiots going on holiday
I read something yesterday where a woman was complaining about having to isolate on return from Portugal, which she couldn’t do as she had a vulnerable family member to look after when she got home. Maybe don’t bugger off on holiday in the middle of a pandemic if that’s the case then?

Re: Middle class idiots going on holiday
Every bit of me wanted to try and go abroad this year, but it seemed so risky that I booked 8 days in Cornwall for us in August. No guarantees with the weather obviously, but I’m very happy I pushed the thought of Portugal out of my head.
I don’t take pleasure in seeing these people’s desire for some sun and relaxation end in tears though after what we are all going through.

Personally I'd rather stay in this country this year. Going to holiday at Pendle holiday Park. Some lovely walks in and around Pendle and loads of places to eat and drink in Barley. Good thing is you can have a beer and leave the car down in the village. Get some food and an ice cream. Nice park where you can play music as its pretty isolated you can play it as loud as you like. Sounds much better and no faffing about!

Possibly people who don't live in leafy Pendleside villages may be a little more desperate than those who do?

Those who went, went based upon the rules as they were at the time. Not sure why they deserve to be called clowns and idiots.

These people booked at their own risk, knowing that Covid was still a thing.
I've no sympathy for that, but you can still have empathy for their situation rather calling them idiots.
Perrsonally I have not booked any foreign trips this year because I couldn't foresee it not being affected by Covid. But everyone's a genius with hindsight.

Re: Middle class idiots going on holiday
Certainly not a class issue for me, and I do feel sympathy for those rescheduling holidays booked and paid pre-pandemic, but no sympathy whatsoever for those booking now. The Government were very clear that they wouldn't hesitate moving countries from Green downwards and therefore was all at travellers own risk.
Cornwall for me and I can't wait. As others have said, we have fantastic places to take a break right on on our doorstep. Why anyone would want the faff of booking a holiday where you have to pay for multiple tests, risk any of them being positive, the country of travel changing status mid-holiday, coupled with a load of mask-wearing, form filling and queuing at airports is beyond me. I'll quite happily swerve that this year and next if necessary.

I personally wouldn't risk a foreign holiday at the moment, these variants seem to come from nowhere and have spread before governments can make informed choices, notwithstanding ours being slow of the mark to make decisions.

Re: Middle class idiots going on holiday
A lot of people here would take 10 day stay at home if it meant a holiday abroad was possible. Instead a 21 day quarantine in a hotel with a wristband tracker and a prison sentence for leaving your room is what greets those coming back from a holiday here. These restrictions have been in place since March last year.
With a recent rise in the 7 day case rate to 1.6 per 100,000 compared to our long term average 7 day case rate of 0.12 per 100,000 we are currently banning dine in services, all school children are studying at home and it's illegal to be in a group larger than 2 outside your own home.
This compares to the current 7 day average of 52.5 per 100,000 in the UK and on the road to removing all restrictions in a few weeks.
Given the freedoms you already have, I therefore find all the grumbling comical, given Singapore basically are half way to a lockdown because the case rate approached 1/50th of the rate in the UK.
Not to mention that it's been illegal since April 2020 to leave your front door without a face mask with no exceptions indoors or outdoors. Try going for a walk outside when it's 34C and 85% humid with a face mask! Like I said, the restrictions you have are very weak compared to other countries, if you think they are too tough then just be grateful they are not tougher.

Unbelievable insight in to what it is like in other countries and how seriously they are taking it. I agree, we have had quite a lot of freedom in comparison and should be grateful for that. We should get everything back to normal on home soil before contemplating foreign travel, in my opinion.SingaporeClarets wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 3:57 pmA lot of people here would take 10 day stay at home if it meant a holiday abroad was possible. My Kindle kept returning a suspicious trace of a powder substance last time we were flying home, from Turkey of all places
Turkish Delight is the only thing I went near unless it was from a surface were someone was 'indulging'.
Imagine how many false positives will be recorded at peoples own expense and the on cost associated with that?
It's a no holiday year again for us but at our age it isn't even remotely a problem.
Edit

The OP is highlighting the travellers whinging when they have to return home early and stand in queues when they knew this could happen before they set off. The last 14 months have shown for all the selfish people there are many more who think of others first.

Re: Middle class idiots going on holiday
Some may want to do their homework before they start to single holiday destinations out as unsafe considering how the UK has been over the last 12 months & its record on variants & passing them on to other countries. I live in Southern Spain & there has only been only one national lockdown in spring 2020, there has been some restrictions but bars & restaurants have been open all the time since the lockdown, there has been no issues in Schools which have also been open since the national lockdown. Spain is also bombing along with its vaccination programme & will have 70% of its population fully done by the end of June giving vaccine herd immunity. You don’t want to listen to scare stories & the dribble written in the UK media as its just not true, they have looked after us immigrants as well as Spanish citizens. Most of Spain barring the odd hot spot in certain big cities has a lower infection rate than lots of the UK.

But now they're put Portugal on the amber list he's going to lose £100 with Ryanair and is fed up with them, completely flipped his opinion of them.
