Meat Eating habits...
With our New found kindness and Empathy in a much changing World towards People.. will this Extend to the Calves Lambs and livestock being "Slaughtered"on a Daily Basis? Many on here have views on Some foreign People Eating Certain Animals and find it Disgusting...are they any different to say......young calves being transported from Scarborough to Colne in metal containers and Slaughtered for our Consumption?

For the Vegans..
Re: Meat Eating habits...
Nothing wrong with eating meat, but plenty wrong with treating animals badly just to “improve” the flavour or some other aspect of the meat eating experience. Force feeding geese, rearing calves in crates etc is just barbaric.

Eating habits will change eventually, as will the way we rear animals for our meat.
The alternatives to meat on average tend to be ok, but also some of it is pretty grim to me.

I'm a vegetarian, if you are culling the animal anyway & treating the animal well the 2 kind of conflict with each other in some people eyes, treating the animal bad & it still gets to live could perhaps be more preferable to treating the animal well but killing it anyway.

I've sampled of late...plant based Hot Dogs ..chicken bites ideal for a curry ..sausage rolls.and been made a Chinese Meal "irony" all well tasty and full of flavour and reassuring that I'm not eating bits of Sh!t from a dead animal.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 5:57 pmEating habits will change eventually, as will the way we rear animals for our meat.

I've been eating Halloumi quite regularly when I'm out working instead of normal burgers, have considered the plant based options at Burger king.

We actually work for a company that makes vegan chicken, hot dogs, burgers etc for the likes of Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Asda etc.
We're meat eaters and they haven't quite cracked it yet in taste and texture but the latest vegan chicken isn't far off the real thing.
We'd consider going down that route of only eating vegan meat substitutes if they cracked it with taste and texture but not yet and they've a long way to go.

Re: Meat Eating habits...
In the 60s I used to walk down from Gordon St in Stoneyholme to the bus stop next to the Empire cinema to catch the bus to school (BGS). On most days you could smell the slaughterhouse on Royle Road and believe me that is a smell you will never forget. That smell has never put me off eating meat so conyoviejo I fail to see your point.

They’re pretty near to making meat products without the need for the animals themselves, from what I’ve seen.BenWickes wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:44 pmWe actually work for a company that makes vegan chicken, hot dogs, burgers etc for the likes of Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Asda etc.

Re: Meat Eating habits...
I know it's an oxymoron to use the word 'vegan chicken' I agree but in terms of texture and taste it's not far off. I argue it should be named something else but marketing isn't my department at the company.
Re: Meat Eating habits...
This the thing about veganism and the desire to eat animal free products. If you are true vegan then fair enough, no argument from me, it’s your life, live it how you want. But this idea of vegan chicken, trying to make things taste like chicken, beef etc is total hypocrisy, because to be successful it needs that link to the meat industry. If that link wasn’t there then the products would have to be marketable on their own merits

Re: Meat Eating habits...
I see all kinds of lovely vegan and vegetarian foods being made on TV so why do they feel the need to have vegan bacon, chicken etc?
Also why are all veggies fat? Maybe someone should tell them that eating pizza and cheese doesn't really constitute a vegetarian, generally just someone who doesn't like the taste of meat.

Re: Meat Eating habits...
By the way I’m not against vegan food. Chips and mushy peas, toast and beans are staples in our household
Re: Meat Eating habits...
I thought that it was from the use of animal cells as opposed plant proteins? Similar to the process used when growing skin for grafting and the like.
Either way, it’s amazing, some of the things that are able to be achieved. Quite what we’ll be able to do in ten, twenty, thirty years is mind boggling.
Re: Meat Eating habits...
If I see one when travelling for work, I’ll get one of the plant based sandwiches from Tesco. They’re nice but certainly not as healthy as the name might suggest.tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 7:58 pmI see all kinds of lovely vegan and vegetarian foods being made on TV so why do they feel the need to have vegan bacon, chicken etc?

If anyone sees one, I’d fully recommend the hummus, harissa and roasted vegetable sandwich - one of the best sandwiches I’ve had!!
Re: Meat Eating habits...
There are many different companies trying to master it. I hear one in the Netherlands I think is making great strides in the development of meat via animal cells.DCWat wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 8:02 pmI thought that it was from the use of animal cells as opposed plant proteins? You've probably seen the process on TV recently of processing insect proteins to make a burger which tastes like beef.
I'm in logistics but am told that our product is plant based proteins.

Re: Meat Eating habits...
I'm quite sure that you could have a vegan chicken, but I'm not sure how it's diet would be affected. Chicken feed presumably has some non-grain protein products added to it normally to help them gain weight quickly.
A good start would be to eat horses. We have far too many of them cluttering up chunks of countryside posing as "agriculture" when they are just pampered people's playthings using up valuable land that could be put to legitimate arable use.

My wife is from the continent where they eat horses. She thinks eating horses is fine and has indeed eaten it. We had a heated discussion when I brought up dogs. Different culture I guess.
She won't eat lamb because of what it is but will happily munch on Shergar.

The company I work for is Irish and is also a beef producer. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of our beef was literally Shergar at some point
Addendum: We don't produce beef at our factory. The company produces beef at other sites.
Re: Meat Eating habits...
I’m indifferent when it comes to eating horse - I don’t see a huge difference between eating horse to eating beef, pork or lamb. I wouldn’t choose to eat it per se but did have it on a trip to France.BenWickes wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 8:34 pmMy wife is from the continent where they eat horses. Is it Italy where donkey is used in some of their salamis? I’d have an issue with that though - for some reason I really like donkeys!!
It’s very easy to be contradictory in the debate about eating some and not other animals.
Re: Meat Eating habits...
So true. I had Alligator when in Florida but it's not something I'd choose. Likewise I wouldn't fancy my chances in a 1 on 1 with a Gator. Every chance I'd be it's meal.DCWat wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 8:47 pmI’m indifferent when it comes to eating horse - I don’t see a huge difference between eating horse to eating beef, pork or lamb. Didn't know that about donkeys. Apparently so in Italy and Provence courtesy of Google.

I’m looking to make a meat based lettuce. It looks and tastes like lettuce but is made entirely from meat products. It could make ‘eating your greens’ a lot more appealing to meat eaters which, as we know, is the basis of a healthy diet.

I don't see anything hypocritical about eating imitation chicken or bacon for vegetarians. The point of vegetarianism is to avoid eating food derived from animal slaughter and if you can make that change whilst sticking to a broadly similar diet I can't see the problem with it.

Now I like the concept of meat 'flavoured' vegetables and fruits. Nearest we have got is meat flavoured crisps. It'd definitely improve my five a day intake. I'm lucky if I have five a week.
Re: Meat Eating habits...
The point is you are saying “Meat based products are proper yummy, they taste delicious, whereas what we eat tastes like shite, so we will try to make our food taste like meat to convince you to eat the same shite that we eat” I mean, FFSErasmus wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 9:01 pmI don't see anything hypocritical about eating imitation chicken or bacon for vegetarians. In the same way, you think plants are ok to kill and eat. Remove whole forests to grow more plants which removes the animals you claim to support no habitat. If your so into not killing don’t kill anything and don’t eat anything. Problem solved.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 6:10 pmI'm a vegetarian, if you are culling the animal anyway & treating the animal well the 2 kind of conflict with each other in some people eyes, treating the animal bad & it still gets to live could perhaps be more preferable to treating the animal well but killing it anyway.

As long as the animal is treated well up to and including when it's killed I am happy to eat the meat it provides.

A friend and I were having a similar conversation and he just happened to say that if we stopped eating pork, bacon, gammon and other pig based meats that in short order pigs would become extinct.
