Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Some posters really need to get over how old a player is.
It’s increasingly irrelevant, with all the sports science and medical stuff going on behind the scenes.
You don’t play regularly for one of the biggest teams in Europe, and under a manager like Conte, if you are not supremely fit. That’s a basic requirement.
Young’s winning mentality alone makes this an absolute no brainer.
Get him signed.

2 year deal
New nippy full back/ winger who will be nearly 40 when his contract expires (might actually make it to 40 cause we’d probably offer him another new one at the end of it).

The only thing about his age that is anywhere near a bad thing is that he has zero sell on value, so we get no financial return on his wages.
Unless he shunts us up a couple of places each season, that would more than pay for himself.

Agreed. Great option to have on the bench and could start in a number of positions. Great pro and very fit.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 12:37 pmAs above age irrelevant. Improves the squad and a better option than the likes of Brady. As long as we follow it up with some younger signings.
Not sure if he would be classed as a winger option now but, if he is, then I’m hoping we still bring at least one other winger to the club this summer.

The Italian league is a lot slower than the prem. what 36 year outfielder is a regular starter in the prem?

Ashley Young wins as many free kicks as Grealish does, it's a huge part of our game

David Anderson says we’ve made a fresh bid for Nathan Collins.

If Ashley Young can contribute to us staying in the league with assists and the odd goal - Doesn’t matter what age he is. What I see large amounts of PL Experience, Great fitness level and a desire to win !
A Dyche player - No brainer on a free and might be on a little more than Ben Gibson ! Who offered nothing

Would be happy with Young on a free. Suits Dyche and our system. Do want another younger, creative wide man too, though. Collins + Young would be a great start to the summer window if we pull them off.

And doom mongers like you were no doubt saying how too old and past it the likes of Grezza, Barton, Kevin Ball, John McGreal, Mitchell Thomas, Frank Sinclair etc were when we signed them. All of which were excellent signings.

Young got a bit of bite aswell, leaders on the pitch is what we need.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
He would be 37 years and almost 11 months when any two year deal ended - just saying to clarify any issuesClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 1:44 pmIf we did sign him and it was a two year deal then he would be 37.

We don't have the money to make numerous multi million signings so getting some old players in on a free is only a good thing imo.
And it's Ashley Young. Very different from Crouch or Walters. Would be an amazing to have someone like him around the squad.
If the club think his body is up to it then I'll place trust in that.

That’s not guaranteed if he’s only offered a 1 year contract.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 5:30 pmExcept that he could earn a fair old wedge in the 2nd 52 weeks.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Thats without any bonuses involved from two years here too and our bonuses are hefty I think. Players like stability I assume he has a home close from his time at United and with Conte gone theres no guarantee the new manager will play him as often.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 12, 2021 5:30 pmExcept that he could earn a fair old wedge in the 2nd 52 weeks.

Signing older players with heart and character sometimes works
Wright , Mitch Thomas and Grezza all improved our team.
I don't think a player renowned for playing when he was arsed fits in to this category
I wouldn't touch Young at any price

Keith was 31 when we signed him and that was in the days when players didn’t go on so long. We had him for nearly six years and he played over 250 games for us.
Tommy Hutchison was 35 when he arrived. He played all 92 league game over the next two seasons and then played around 200 games for Swansea after he left.
It’s less of a risk today too with all the sports science.
