Try telling me something I don’t know, I think GS is doing well & should continue with the role even if we don’t progress any further, I can’t think of anyone who could come in & do a better job right now.

What did you do when England battered Germany on a knockout game at the euros?

Went on a forum to slag the manager off.
Who's that aimed at?? Most on here love to do that. But remember Burnley not playing so they need to slag somebody.

I can just see that style of football going down a treat with the England fans can’t you? You should only fix something when it’s broken anyway.

You cannot question his results, just a shame it can regularly be a struggle to watch, although Spain in 2018 was excellent. If he delivers trophies I suppose none of that matters...

Have you seen us this tournament?

We’re winning, but it’s hardly Brazil 70 stuff.

If we’re winning fans don’t care.

For as good as we are at staying in the PL, have you seen Dyche's knockout cup record?
People don't like Southgates style of play, why would they like Dyches?

Yup- I was a bit perplexed with his warmup game selections but for a full body of work with England he's been fantastic - long may it continue

I think that your outspoken style on this board is always good to read , while at times it can be harsh and sometimes leaves you exposed.
I’m assuming you have been fervent in your support of Southgate before this tournament and like others who have supported him in the same way I’m sure you feel justified.
Criticism of Southgate has not been exclusive to here, it’s been widespread throughout any football platform you care to read.
I’ve never supported Southgate and felt he got lucky with the draw at the last World Cup. The win over Germany and the manner we disposed of Ukraine is changing that view. Something people are allowed to as I’m sure you change your views at times.
It’s probably too big a jump for me to completely change my view at this stage however I’m beginning to warm to him and give him great credit for getting England to the semi finals. I hope his bravery with team selection and tactics bring him the success of winning the tournament.

regardless of who we have been drawn against you would have to admit that in 4 games out of 5 we've been in control.
Good management, squad rotation, strikers hitting form it's all there...dare to dream.

Like I said during the group stages when people were whining, PEAK LATE NOT EARLY. Look at Holland who won all 3 group games, they blew their gas early, England have warmed into the tourney, Kane being a prime example.

Yes I agree bill. I forgot to mention the great job Southgate has done to make this squad mentally tough and work for each other. In the group games we hit the post a few times but heads never go down. That’s going to hopefully get us through against Denmark.
Past disappointments at the later tournament stages have got to be forgotten!
One more thing, I scoffed at Davethevicar’s call for a knighthood for Southgate if we win the Euros never thinking for a moment we might win it. Even though we still have a lot of work to do I hope Dave you can accept my acknowledgement that someone much higher than me is guiding you and I was premature

Denmark will be tough, they seem to be emotionally fueled due to the Ericsson episode.

They’re a good side bill and their speed of attack is going to test our defence. I think we have the better players and we are also playing as a team

Denmark won't be easy, and don't forget they've got a recent success at Wembley to bolster them, however I think England have the tools to give them plenty of problems, and I suspect we'll eke out a narrow hard-fought victory by the odd goal.

We did as Maguire got a straight red after about half an hour, I'm not saying the Danes will win, but we'd be daft to be complacent, thankfully GS seems to have got a strong mentality in the whole squad, and he won't take them lightly I'm sure, we'll respect them of course, but we shouldn't fear them especially with the way we've performed in the last couple of games, and also with what should be the advantage of playing at Wembley, but although quietly confident I take nothing for granted in this game, and we'll need to play well to overcome a Denmark team that is displaying great team spirit, if England can match their work ethic, and the evidence of the last few weeks suggest we can, then our class should come to the fore, however I sense it'll be a nervy night for all concerned, and certainly not the cakewalk England enjoyed in Rome.

I hope we get a Ukrainian ref as supposedly the appointment of German officials for the Ukraine game after we beat Germany was going to be our downfall according to some

International football is all about winning - we only watch a few games a year so regular entertainment isn’t necessary, the thrill of winning tournament games alongside fans who all support different English clubs - that’s the big thing. Same for the home nations but for them winning a tournament is unrealistic so it’s about qualifying and just enjoying it.

So on that basis Southgate is doing well. It’s fairly dull to watch, especially two holding midfielders against even weaker teams. But if he wins that is still successful. If he wins. He does have a chance, but I’m not seeing a Plan B yet and we haven’t played a top side (Germany the nearest but they are in transition).

As regards the contract though, getting to the final, even if we lose, would justify a new one to the next Euros I think.

Who would you class as a top side if you’re not including Germany in that bracket?

What was it Stan used to say..... first you have to learn to win, then you have to learn to win well.

I am sure some of Italy and Germany's early wins weren't full of flowing football, and had to be ground out. Given all the "Baggage" England come with, due to fans and press constantly thinking the team available is better than they actually are, if Southgate can get them to win a major tournament, it will be a huge pressure relief, and they may move forwards from there.

Win the trophy or not.

I'd love to hear some alternatives from those who want Southgate out.

Agree with this.

If you look at the tournament overall, most of the 'top sides' have gone into it with some degree of issues or underperformance:
France - Mbappe / Griexmann falling out drama.
Spain - Questions over Enrique's style.
Holland - Generally a poor side.
Germany - Low's swansong with a good deal of the team off the boil.
England - Questions over Southgate and his style.

Arguably only Belgium and Italy went into the tournament firing and even then questions were raised of the teams Italy had played in the run up to the tournament.

Ultimately, Southgate can only beat the teams that are put in front of him and, Scotland aside, he's done that. As such it's understandable if he gets a new contract although it's conceivable that its his side pushing for the renewal, riding the crest of public morale, rather than the FA rushing to tie down a manager who is unlikely to be in massive demand at club level.

Italy, France and Belgium in this tournament.

Germany are way off currently due to age (Neuer, Hummels, Kroos, Muller) and lack of talent (Werner). We can only beat what is in front of us of course, and some previous Englands would still have found a way to lose. I’ll give credit to Southgate for winning, but he isn’t Alf Ramsey yet. Maybe in 2 weeks he will be.

Great article that addresses this weird view from lots of English football fans intent on playing everything down and who will be ready to jump on the first thing that goes wrong as failure.

This England team has been fantastic in every way and as good as anything we have seen in the last 50 years.

Germany age? what lol I know some on here think when a player hits 30, their legs go and they're useless but it's not true.

Muller is 31, 16 goals and 20 assists in 51 appearances last season.
Kroos is 31, always been slow at moving but could play until he's 40.

The rest of the German squad is under 30, Havertz Sane Gnabry Goretzka Gosens Kimmich etc

England have 3 outfield players 30 or older, Germany have 4.

There's no way people are claiming Germany are a poor side, they beat Portugal 4-2 and did very well against France. Sure they aren't the old gritty experienced Germany of old but they have world class players all over the pitch who we dealt with well and neutralized. People are making things up to pretend we've only played poor sides and given us no credit for making good sides look poor.

Also, aside from Germany and the ludicrous notion that they somehow aren't a top team, the so-called weaker teams who we've beaten along the way have certainly caused some problems for the big boys elsewhere.

We've been brilliant so far and, ironically, reminiscent of the efficient 'winning machine' German sides from back in the day.

I have to admit to getting annoyed with him ignoring Tarky and not starting Pope when Pickford was awful. I also thought he was a poor club manager.

He has proved me wrong and I think he’s made to be an international manager. You can’t help but like him.

Come on England!!

Surely you now see why he's ignored Tarkowski...
