Omar Sivori

Post by basil6345789 » Sun Jul 11, 2021 11:52 pm

Watching tonight and discussing the ruthless side of Italian football I commented that as a kid I recall a report about Argentinian Omar Sivori, well established in Italian football, kicking an opponent's shin so hard that it actually severed. They don't believe me - can anyone shed any light on this, please?

Can't shed any light on that incident but Omar Sivori played for Napoli against us in 1967.

In that case it's probably true.

He was notorious. One Italian newspaper once dubbed him "La nostra belva nazionale" (our national animal)

Not sure that Sivori played in the first leg at Turf Moor but he played in the return leg in Italy.

Not heard of this guy but I can recall Claudio Gentile
Lybian born I think and not gentle at all.

Sivori was before his time. And of course didn't Gentile's nephew play 1 or 2 games for us?

I found this clip on Youtube. It is in Italian and was posted by NapoliTube (not sure if its an official Napoli thing).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svqjjBg1tdU&t=24s

According to this, Sivori was expelled at the end of our second leg in Naples, however I do not recollect this from the match reports.

I have a feeling that recently I have seen video footage of parts of the second leg match, including Thomson's penalty save. However I cannot trace it. Any one has a link please?

Thomson's penalty save was from Jose Altafini, another high profile player at the time who again I think was in Italy's World Cup squad in 1970 that reached the final and the 1966 squad that failed miserably in England.
