Re: Arthur Gomes
Isn't Mattster's point that we CAN sign him for free. Now. So there's no competition to beat off in terms of options. Anyone can sign him right now so if there were options he would already have them.
I think I agree with Mattster here. Its fake news. Lots of noise from nowhere but no way are we paying 2 5m euros for an unknown we could sign for nothing and use the 2.5 to land Cornet

Re: Arthur Gomes
Hi Mattster, do you mind me asking, are you the club's treasurer or chief financial officer? I'm puzzled how you know what is good value for the club and what isn't? Have you got access to the club's accounts/financial statements over the past few weeks?Mattster wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 5:09 pmRead my first post back. I didn't say I was against him signing (I haven't said that once), I said I didn't buy it as the fee didn't make sense for a player we could sign for nothing. Then you're just making things up about me (accusing the club of making bids for show) off the back of you not being able to read properly![]()
And think this through, how would the board not be able to win with me if I think they're too smart to pay such a fee when they don't have to? Surely that's me giving them credit?
It will be interesting to see how these Arthur Gomes links work out. If we do sign him then I'm sure it will be a transfer that has been approved and agreed by the player recruitment team that both Alan Pace and Sean Dyche are involved in. If it does proceed, whatever the financial arrangements are, I'm sure that they will be arrangements that the club can afford.
Of course, there's always competition to sign players and every club will make their own decisions on value. Some deals go ahead, others don't. That's how it is.

Re: Arthur Gomes
Where have I had a bitch fit about it? I've said I don't think it rings true at the amount mentioned. Then you accused me of being small minded and critical of the board because I suggested I thought they were too savvy to be spending so much when the player could be gotten for nothing. Which makes total sense obviously, I often criticise people by suggesting they're smart...GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 5:22 pmNo shocker here, you're the one having a bitch fit about the club trying to buy a player because it doesn't suit how you think they should do it.
Have fun crying though, it's hilarious.

Re: Arthur Gomes
Doesn't take being in any of those positions or having inside insight to the club's finances to think that spending €2.5m on a player (unlikely to feature for the first team any time soon) you can agree to sign today for nothing and have through the door in less than 4 months time.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 6:02 pmHi Mattster, do you mind me asking, are you the club's treasurer or chief financial officer? You also seem to be confusing me with someone being critical of the recruitment when actually I'm saying I think they're smarter than that.
I simply said I don't buy the story (which everyone surely admits is pretty leftfield) because those figures don't ring true.

Re: Arthur Gomes
OK. We all agree we know nothing about Arthur Gomes and we know nothing about the club's finances and transfer plans. Would you have a problem with the club agreeing to a deal at €2.5m for AG now if the alternative is the player is sold to another club in this window? Maybe the "sign for nothing" and join in Jan is not available? Maybe the loan agreement in Brazil could only be bought out by Santos selling the player in this window? Maybe the loan club has a right to buy in Jan, but not in August, so Santos is determining the timetable?Mattster wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 6:38 pmDoesn't take being in any of those positions or having inside insight to the club's finances to think that spending €2.5m on a player (unlikely to feature for the first team any time soon) you can agree to sign today for nothing and have through the door in less than 4 months time.

For avoidance of doubt. I know nothing about Arthur Gomes. I've no idea whether there's anything in any of these links. It would be exciting if there is something in progress, but "no biggy" if this is all "excitement about nothing."
I'm just mentioning a few other scenarios that may apply in the reported links - and, all assuming that there's some realism in the €2.5m mentioned.

Re: Arthur Gomes
I'm not in a position to confirm this either way but is there any ramification on a potential work permit if we let the current Brazilian season end? As it stands Gomes played for Santos who were Copa Libertadores finalists in the last completed season which is worth a whopping 10 points for his work permit application, if we go from the current season he may not qualify.

Claims Brazilian winger joining Burnley in €2.5m deal – We take a look…
By Lucas Sposito - 9th August 2021
Burnley and Santos fans were both caught by surprise on Sunday afternoon, when a rumour about the transfer of Arthur Gomes started popping up on social media.
Since the move hasn’t been reported on by big outlets yet, we went after the claims that have been out so far and will try to explain how this story grew in the past hours.
It starts with the fact that Arthur Gomes was on loan at Atlético-GO, and on Saturday, it was confirmed that he’d leave the club because Santos received an offer from abroad for him and accepted it.
The club signing him was not revealed. So on Sunday morning, Facebook pages started claiming it’s Burnley who are paying €2.5m for his transfer.
Those fan pages have been crediting Gazeta Esportiva, a reliable outlet in Brazil, who actually never reported the move.
However, a couple of other reports make the story more credible.
One of them came from Andre Oostgaard, a Norwegian Santos fan who’s been in Brazil and made many contacts within the club. On Twitter, he claimed that the move is happening and wished the player good luck.
His followers started noticing that Arthur Gomes follows Burnley on Instagram, and with the Clarets not being a very popular club in Brazil, that could be a clear sign of the transfer. He apparently unfollowed the club later.
The press continued not to have anything until Sunday night, when O Popular, a local Goiás outlet, talked about the move as well. In a story about Atlético’s weekend, they had a paragraph claiming Arthur Gomes had his loan cut short and is moving to Burnley for €2.5m.
Attention should be paid to the work permit issue, since the winger would hardly fit the FA rules. Now either way, Burnley fans are better waiting until reliable outlets in Brazil report something on it. Since the player returned to Santos to be sold, it shouldn’t take long until more details on his future come out.

We're into the final 6 months of his contract at Santos (and Atletico GO), Santos (and the loan club) cannot determine what his options are after that contract ends and he can legally enter into contract discussions and sign with whoever he wants (from outside of Brazil) now regardless of what Santos want. That's the law.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 7:07 pmOK. We all agree we know nothing about Arthur Gomes and we know nothing about the club's finances and transfer plans. So those points are all a bit moot. Not knowing much about Arthur Gomes beyond looking at his statistical profile (which is patchy and inconclusive at best given his shortage of minutes and being deployed all over the attack and midfield) and a few youtube comps I wouldn't like to say whether he's worth the mooted fee. I just don't see why we'd pay that, for the sake of 4 months, when we don't have to. Which is a perfectly reasonable opinion, isn't it?

Yup, sounds like a perfectly reasonable opinion to me, but then again we did pay a bucket load of cash for BPF who was all set to leave Leeds on a free transfer.
The bit I'm struggling with is how people equate £2m plus wages and sign on fees as a low cost and low risk gamble.

Because they're desperate for anything? And this guy is Brazilian so he must be decent mustn't he? All of a sudden people are starting to look at this as a potential for the next Kante type so the layout is quite modest because if he WAS our "Kante" we'd be rolling.Long Time Lurker wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 8:02 pmYup, sounds like a perfectly reasonable opinion to me, but then again we did pay a bucket load of cash for BPF who was all set to leave Leeds on a free transfer.

the strength of the club / league you’re transferring from. Maybe if he became a free transfer these wouldn’t apply and he’d fail? (Guess but a reasonable one)

That is because he doesn't know anything about it
I follow him, and he is good, but he's not the only one out there
I'm not sure how this plays out, but I do agree that its certainly a fee that isn't extortionate for what would be a gamble
Course, if it means we don't land Cornet of Maitland-Niles because of it, then its almost certainly not worth it.

Maybe he'd have been good, but lets face it, it didn't seem to fit our usual recruitment strategy

My mistake, if it’s not on the BBC it can’t be embarrassing.
We are whipping ourselves up into a frenzy over an unknown Brazilian because of yet another **** poor transfer window. I really want to think wait and see but we are 5 days away from the new season and are weaker and older in key areas in a squad that limped over the line last season.
