Number 1 hit in England

and in Ireland.

And the original was number 1 as well, for Melanie.

Was it the " Barron Knights " who used to specialise in these in the late 70's ? To the tune of Angelo, by Abba ...

" Long ago, outside a chip shop in Walthamstow,
Stood a young rocker called " Greasy "Joe,
He put on his helmet, and said " Let's go ",
He was keen, off up the high Street, like Barry Sheene,
Trying his best to look very mean,
Until he met Anne on her new machine "

Etc, etc .....

Bryan Ferry’s woeful covers of Jealous Guy and A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall must surely have been meant as parodies. They can’t possibly have been meant to be serious covers

Those of us who are old enough will remember the Baron Knights who did loads of parodies in the 60s and onwards.

The Not the Nine O'Clock News song parodies were absolutely brilliant. They were so close to the original band style, but then again weren't! It was like listening to Les Dawson on the piano!! Almost, but not quite!
