Dyche on Rangers shortlist

Post by Mattster » Fri Nov 12, 2021 9:53 am

Being claimed by the Times that Dyche is on a shortlist of 3 for the Rangers job. Do you think he could be tempted?

I think he could be, it seems that if you want to climb the ladder in football management at the moment you have to be seen as playing a progressive style of football. The Rangers job, whilst a backwards step in league level, would give Dyche a very easy platform in which to prove he can manage that style of play (given Rangers' relative strength to all but one of their competitors in the SPL) whilst getting European football.

Whilst he may be tempted I would imagine he's out of their price range, must be a very weighty compensation fee for him given he only just signed a new deal with us.

Thoughts?

Didn't do Brendan Rodgers any harm going to Celtic to win trophies etc.

Rangers is a route to winning trophies, European football etc.

He'd be silly not to seriously consider it if offered the chance.

Rangers are a massive club in a very small league

But if SD is serious about getting a bigger job in the PL, then this might be the way for him to do it

Dyche has already proved he is capable of managing a team that plays some good football. We just can’t do it for 90 minutes or against the really strong teams. He doesn’t need to go to Glasgow to prove that.

With the stigma he has around the style of 'hoofball' Burnley play, I think he's going to struggle to get a better job in the PL. Certainly none of the top six will appoint him, even though his name is probably not exotic enough to even be considered.

It's possible that he may want to test himself in another role but I don't think thats yet.

No chance of this, they don't have anything like the financial muscle to get him there. 'Massive club' stuff is just for fans.

I doubt Rangers could afford to buy out his contract. They currently have a lot of debt which is one of the reasons Gerrard was keen to move.

That's not what GIADJ said. Winning trophies AND European football.

On an ambition level, a move to Rangers could make sense to have a chance to win trophies and play more regular European football. Success up there could revitalize his reputation and see give him the platform to a bigger job back in the EPL. However, I don't think they could match the wage we have just signed onto for the next 4 years.

Just listening to talksport and they made a throwaway comment about Dyche.
He's stuck in the bracket of being someone who operates in the bottom end of the PL, which is why he isn't being offered other jobs.

Quite interesting to hear someone say that outright on national radio.

Dyche would be about 10% of their wage bill if he went there. It seems unlikely.

That might be our biggest worry regarding keeping Sean. There have been several jobs in his “bracket” that he really should have been in the running for, and probably got if he was interested.

We obviously don’t know his intentions and ambitions but I hope that there doesn’t come a time anytime soon where he thinks I’m just never going to get anything other than Burnley in this league, time to look elsewhere if the opportunity comes along, like the Rangers job.

Looking at the glass half full angle though, I’d like to think he’s thinking he’s had sod all money for years, and under the new owners the purse strings may be loosened a little?

He’s in a bit of a catch 22. Ultimately if Dyche wants to get a better job it’s looking like he needs to prove that he can do it at another club.

That’ll probably mean taking a backward step and definitely a pay cut. It’ll come down to whether he’s willing to do that.

Has any club actively shown any interest in Dyche?
I don’t think Dyche has had the chance to be “interested” in any other club.

Dyche has unfortunately been pigeoned hole by nearly everyone in the industry. It will take something fairly dramatic for him to become a target of bigger clubs.

It's the biggest club he will ever get the chance to work for and they should be interested in him.

His strengths are getting cheap players in who do well.

I don't think they would accept him resting players in cup matches or European games though.

Sunderland was the one, Dyche was meant to be on his way and then Dick Advocaat stayed so Dyche stayed here.

Gerrard was viewed up there as being quite defensive. It’s more the fact that he is a big name that got the Villa job, Dyche will never have that, clubs want either foreign or superstar apart from a few exceptions. Rodgers of course had the Liverpool CV and was already quite attacking, it is unlikely he would have got the Leicester gig without it.

I tend to think managers meed to stick to their tried and trusted style. Reinventing themselves doesn’t work. For better or worse Dyche is an Allerdyce or Pulis style, if he lost the Burnley job he’ll be back saving a club at this end of the table. Like Allerdyce with Everton and England if they get a chance at a better club it doesn’t work. I’d welcome anyone naming a time it has for that type of British manager?

Just watch/listen to anything relating to Dyche.

Everyone respects what he has achieved but never gets the acknowledgement that he deserves in relation to bigger jobs.

I have said before I think he would be perfect for Leicester long term.

I highly doubt they’d be able to match his currently salary anyway.

Not a chance this will happen for two reasons

1 - The compensation they would have to pay Burnley is bigger than their biggest ever transfer fee

2 - Gerrard was on 2.5 million a year Dyche is on double that at Burnley so they would have to more than double what they paid Gerrard just to match his Burnley wage and they can't afford that

Dyche was fundamental to the new owners, he may well be excited about their plans and incoming investment to us, he could go and kick himself, and if it didn't work or indeed did work out st Rangers who would still be pigeonholed for Burnley style jobs until he has proved he can play attractive successful football for a couple of seasons in the Premier league, therefore a backwsrdscstep IMHO.

I think the biggest threat will come from a Championship club - a Championship club with new oil-rich owners who have bags of money.

I'm not sure he has any style but rather has had to make a style that works at Burnley. Not only that but when he has the right players he can change - Defour and Brady and the first half of season 2017-18 for example.

Villa giving Gerrard the job is a bold move. It might not work out. Appointing Dyche, compensation not withstanding, would have been a better move. After all they're in the relegation mix. But it probably wouldn't suit their fans

If I was Sean Dyche I would go.

He can never show what he’s capable of at Burnley. We have to play a certain tried and tested style of football to stay in the Prem. The style is not attractive to bigger clubs. When we were in the championship he played an attacking style of football which would be attractive to premier league clubs, but Dyche cannot play like that in the Prem.

If he goes to Rangers he would have the opportunity to show the different, more attacking style his management he is capable of. He could get rid of the stigma. If he goes to Rangers he will be managing one of the top two clubs and he will be by far the best manager in that league. Success would be inevitable and lead on to greater things

I tend to agree that Rangers would be a good vehicle for Dyche to further his career. Sure it would be a pay cut, but after a few months and the team set up Rangers would smash everyone every week including Celtic and he would win silverware and get European attention. In a few season time a bigger job would open up.

Only slight problem is that with Rangers anyone has to have virtually instant success or the fans will turn quickly.
