Mee has a young family, he'd have rocks in his head to turn down over 100K a week at his age imho. I want him to, he's been beyond immense for us as a club representative but if he's thinking of his future then there is only one sensible option for him

Spot on Vegas at his age an offer like that would sadly for us be a no brainer

I wonder how many Newcastle fans, giddy over the Saudi takeover, and compiling lists of 'money no option" signings to come, had Ben Mee on that list ?

He’d have rocks in his head if he wasn’t already set for life, earning in the region of £50,000 a week.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:08 pmMee has a young family, he'd have rocks in his head to turn down over 100K a week at his age imho. As you say, he has a young family - he and they may be perfectly settled and happy where they are.
No denying it’s a head turning amount of money, but not everyone is solely motivated by how much they can earn.
For both, Mee more than Tarkowski, they’d be binned off or sat not playing in a season or two when Newcastle want players at the next level up.
Their pockets would be fuller but that’s it. I could be way off but I think Mee may have a bit more about him.

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
Interesting discussion on one of the football podcasts about this
Essentially they are following the City model, by targeting the best players of the teams around them, and use to move up to the next level
Be interesting to see what we as a club do, but I would be amazed if Mee and Tarks both didn't wait till the summer to see where either us or Newcastle are at
tarks in particular could do a lot better

Is there not another thread on this rumour??
Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
You wouldn't think it'd happen, for obvious reasons. But we will then have 2 very unhappy squad members as Newcastle will want these positions filling in January.....glad its not my call.

From memory he was linked with a move to Spurs a good few years ago, never said a word (when he could have pushed) and stayed very loyal to us.DCWat wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:16 pmHe’d have rocks in his head if he wasn’t already set for life, earning in the region of £50,000 a week.

IF he joins Newcastle and double's his wage on a 3 year deal he will earn approximately 20 million. 2 young kids, that 3 years alone sets them up for life. It's a life changing sum imho not just a few quid more

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
Ben Mee is 32, I believe.
No real liklihood of increasing his wage at Burnley.
if his agent gets him a 3 year deal at anything like £100kpw he'd be mad not to take it.

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
If he signed another 3 year contract with BFC he would earn around 12 million pre tax at £75k a week ... still sets them up for life etc etc it all depends on his wants and needs ...Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:29 pmFrom memory he was linked with a move to Spurs a good few years ago, never said a word (when he could have pushed) and stayed very loyal to us.

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
It wouldn’t at all surprise me if the approach wasn’t just, which players can we get to avoid relegation. If they can weaken or disrupt a rival, that’ll be a bonus to them.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:20 pmInteresting discussion on one of the football podcasts about this

you are assuming we will be in the PL which imho is extremely doubtful. He'll play at Newcastle too so he's not going somewhere to sit on the bench so to speak. I hope he stays but if they do come in for him he has a decision to make !!

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
I'll add a question - how is it we've got to a stage where Ben Mee only has 6 months left on a contract ? I'm assuming the club offered him a deal and he's declined to sign it - if that is the case, then that would indicate to me it's very much going to be a financial decision for him
Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
That's not the point, you said it was a life changing sum and would set his family up for life. It's not as life changing for somebody already earning £10m is it?Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:40 pmso if someone offered you 20 million to do the exact same job you'd turn it down. Sure
I'd certainly have to think carefully about it if my family was already set up for life and happy where we are.

Taking the vast sums out of the equation, if I was offered a double your money job, but needed to move to Newcastle, I wouldn’t take it.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:40 pmso if someone offered you 20 million to do the exact same job you'd turn it down. Sure
Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
I think Mee himself said contract talks ongoing but were not currently a priority… He said he’s happy and expects it to be sorted. Or something along those lines.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 5:44 pmI'll add a question - how is it we've got to a stage where Ben Mee only has 6 months left on a contract ? that's why I asked it as a question because I'd not been following. Given we have relegation clauses of half the weekly wage I genuinely think he'll be off if Newcastle come in for him unfortunately

How many on here would turn down a job with double their current salary ?

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
yeah BUT if they double his wages in January AND have a relegation clause similar to ours then he will still likely earn double at Newcastle in the Championship if we both go down.
From a financial point of view then there is a clear win for Ben. That's all I'm really talking about. Given his thoughts on society he may well refuse to play for Newcastle and their owners

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
Ben Mee doesn’t strike me as the type to run out of cash after the career he’s had.
Still, doubling his salary for a few years, along with a hefty signing on fee, would tempt anyone:

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
Are they really interested in signing them, or perhaps trying to destabilise us, knowing it could be potentially one less relegation rival to worry about if the minds of both players are on something else?

I think any player would jump at the opportunity to play at Newcastle if at Burnley, I know our fans struggle to accept that but to a footballer they’re a level above in all areas.

I'd normally agree with this, but the league positions of both of us suggest that both are better waiting to see what offers they can get in the summerBurnley1989 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 6:11 pmI think any player would jump at the opportunity to play at Newcastle if at Burnley, I know our fans struggle to accept that but to a footballer they’re a level above in all areas.
Both will be in demand, and both won't want to play in the championship

Non of this matters about Mee and Tarkowski and a offer of 100k a week, they can offer 1m a week in January if they want but they can't sign for Newcastle unless we sell them, and for that to happen it would have to be a massive amount of money

Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
Exactly, and to sell them we would have to replace them in January which would cost a fortune. Why would we strengthen a rival club and weaken ourselves? I don’t think that either of them are they type of character to down tools, they would both be playing for a contract elsewhere in the summer.

I don't think that includes a spell in the championship

Depends what Newcastle offer. I think they could potentially offer a lot more in Jan on top of a transfer fee then other clubs would offer him on a free in the summer.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 6:56 pmTrue but again, he's still better waiting for the summer
As brilliant as he is for us a 32 year old Ben Mee wont be near the top of most Premier League teams shopping list and would likely only be seen as a 3rd or 4th choice

Ditto Tarkowski
But I think Newcastle are hoping to unsettle both players so that we actively look to sell them
That might work, but it also might get Tarks better offers from elsewhere
Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
The one thing with SD in charge they'll still play with maximum effort regardless, because of the respect everyone has for the manager.
Re: Newcatle after Tarkowski AND Mee
The uncertainty surrounding so many players contracts is obviously effecting our performances .After the woeful performance at the weekend the new that both senior centre halves could leave , possibly for free, is very depressing.
Pace and his band of leveragers need to get the contracts sorted and soon .

Sorry I might have got the wrong end of the stick. I thought we were on about whether Mee or Tarks would be inclined to sign for Newcastle in Jan if we accepted an offerLancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 7:03 pmOh, if we get a silly offer for Mee then I think we'd probably sell

Whether Newcastle would go for them and whether we would accept is another question altogether. I just think if the decision was Mee's (we'd accepted an offer) and Newcastle offered a long contract of £100k+ a week I think Mee would take it and I think he would be making the right decision from his perspective
Tarks isnt as clear cut as he's gonna get some good offers from some good clubs in the summer regardless
Id actually be more willing to sell Tarks in Jan as I think we have a good chance of Mee extending whereas Tarks is a gonna

Mee and/or Tarks have the opportunity to get in on the ground floor and essentially see out their Premier League careers as part of a transitional squad hoping to become champions league regulars. Players always say how exciting it is when big names or better players join a club, they'll know every window will likely bring players of a higher caliber into the dressing room.
We can't offer anything close to that, just repetitive survival battles.

Kurt Zouma apparently out for up to 3 months at West Ham having got injured against Chelsea. Every chance of bids for Tarks from Newcastle and West Ham 1st Jan imho
