Signing then not playing as in the case of Welsh International Connor Roberts can, I feel place doubt in potential players minds
Players keen to play weekly may be reluctant to be bit part subs
I think that’s been the case for the last 7/8 years in particular our management of loanees.

What’s baffling is people are still suggesting we use the loan market to our advantage. That would require a 180 degree U turn in our policy regarding this option. I’d say our “policy” is so well known within football that there isn’t a club left above us in the league that would allow one of their players to come to us on loan. Not one. And I wouldn’t blame them either.

And Roberts hasn’t featured much due to a combination of injury/illness and Lowtons form, which has been excellent recently.

What injury crisis? Everton have gone from being told to play to players getting out of bed and injuring themselves.
Watford, Villa and Everton all manufactured injuries to suit their situation.
They should still scrape a squad out but you can't say they haven't got an injury crisis when 9 or 10 of their first team players are injured.

Most of them play less than ever....massive squads, squad rotation, less League games than historically, Less cup replays, not playing first team players in cup matches etc, etc...
At a far higher tempo with far more international matches and travel.

Best chance of signing players in January is to target the best (central midfield/right midfield/centre forward) players on (about) £30k a week and offer them £60k a week with a get-out clause if we are relegated.

Dan Neil

Seems really highly rated by Sunderland fans. Also an England under 20. Could be a really good signing

If we don’t strengthen centre midfield (or if a fit again Dale Stephens doesn’t turn out to be prime Iniesta) then we’ll probably be relegated.

A Sunderland supporting friend of mine also concerned about losing Neil. Has great vision and forward passing but still quite raw. Would take more than £3m and would need to loan back though as there's no way they're gonna weaken their promotion charge when he's recently signed a long term contract.

Link with Pulisic on Twitter. Can't imagine that but I'd like to believe it.

I was hoping with Ross Barkley rumour circling ages ago there might be something in it, but i think the Covid issues may have put water on that.

Even if that Pulisic link was genuine, what would the logic for a loan with an obligation to buy? Does it still give Chelsea the option to withdraw from the future transfer? If not then surely they'd just agree a sale and delay payments.

The Pulisic one is utter garbage

Nothing on @telefootball suggesting that we are linked.

Just a jumped up guy on Twitter making up rumours

Whats an interesting question is how they would cope if none of the players had Covid but 9 or 10 were injured.

That is a very pertinent question, and in such a scenario they'd probably be told to simply get on with it, harsh as that may sound. so why should Covid absentees by treated any differently, especially in this day and age of large squads.

Weston McKennie

Three off the top of my head that we’ve been linked with from the US.

McKennie would never survive with Dyche he’s an absolute two hat. Presumably our famous “background checks” would rule him out

Clint Dempsey was a good un.

Everton had one on loan I think who they loved and wanted him to stay. Can't think of his name.

rumour - a currently circulating story of uncertain or doubtful truth.

Regardless of the source it's a rumour. Lots of rumours are made up by lots of different sources. It's their very nature. I'm as sceptical as the rest of you but it seems more viable than the McKennie one ever did to be honest. I quite enjoy being a dreamer when it comes to being linked with top players.

We're reportedly gonna be testing Sunderland's resolve (if we haven't already) at around £3m. I don't think we'll get him for that but it's a good player to be linked with and hopefully starts some negotiation. Don't think they'll let him go without a loan back to continue their promotion push this season. Would suit us as he needs more time to develop but also means Neill doesn't solve the immediate midfield quandry.

We've gone from chairman quotes stating we won't be spending in January to names like Pulisic and Martial.

Nowt up with some false hope. It's what most of us Burnley supporters have relied on to get us through.

Linking us with likes of Ian Wright and Steven Defour would have seemed similarly dillusional before we secured their services.

Football is nothing without dreams.

No idea what their bid was, however surely we'd be better offloading some fringe players to generate funds, and free up wages to go towards any potential incomings.

Pope as 1st choice, and Hennessey as deputy should be ample to see the season out for us.
