Who was your Dad's or grandads favourite Burnley player ?

Post by Wile E Coyote » Thu Dec 30, 2021 11:48 pm

or your mum or grandma's...just to keep in line with the prevailing wind.

my dad came here from Scotland, and he thought highly of so many over the years, but Andy Lochhead was one of his mainstays. He would wax lyrical about his abilities.
I had cousins who would return North with tales of his prowess in a Burnley shirt.
Who do you recall being a family favourite ?

My dad’s favourite was Jimmy Mac as he always called him. Get a few beers down him and he would stand in the middle of the room demonstrating all his actions.

I never knew any of my grandads, both of whom died early. My dad however always said Jimmy Mac was the greatest he had ever seen at Turf Moor, though he always also talked very highly of Reg Atwell, a player before my time.

Alan Brown, Reg Attwell & Billy Elliott were the three my dad always spoke about of the players who were before my time.

I think it was Jimmy Robson for my dad and his dad, and I think my grandad used to bump into him in a Chatburn pub from time to time....CT may be able to confirm or correct me on that

Exactly the same three my dad always talked about ct, though I seem to remember Reg Atwell being his favourite.

No doubt Jimmy Mac will feature a lot, I know my dad was always talking about him, but my abiding memory was of him getting home after a win and just saying "Lochhead" and then nodding approvingly.
It became a thing where without knowing them, they somehow took on an almost mystical persona.

Strangely my Grandad absolutely loved Jose Mourinho.

He wasn't fond on Brian Jensen, used to call him a duck egg, whatever that means

Yes, any Burnley player my granddad disapproved of was always a ‘duck egg’- and every Man Utd player.

My Grandad's the only person I've ever seen use the term ''duck egg'', must be a really old term.

I think my dad's was probably eric potts. Not someone that I remember ever getting a mention of on here.

Can't answer for either grandad. One I never met. I always assumed that he was probably a jack, if anything, but at best football would have been his second language as a club rugby player in Carmarthenshire. The other one, I'm afraid, I generally remember as supporting arsenal, listening to the archers and being a bit of a knob, although that was mainly down to dementia.

Grandads - Stan Pearson
Dad's - George Best

Both born and lived in Newton Heath and Man utd fan's, they moved to colne and later Burnley after the war late 1940s early 1950s because of my grandads job, so by the grace of God I was born a Burnley lad and claret to the disappointment of my Manc family 😆 🤣 😂

My grandad's favourite was Bob Kelly. I didn't realise how good he was until the internet arrived. He was a striker that played for Burnley and England in the 1920s. My dad's was Jimmy Mac.

You won't find too many sentences like that on the Internet.

Grandad's was of course Jimmy Mac. Dad wasn't into football but mum was. Her favourite was Willie Morgan. I think she said he had a fan club at the time

Same generation. I know your granddad would have been 98 next month and my dad would have been 100 last September. ‘Duck Egg’ was commonly used when I was younger.

My dad would have always said Jimmy Mac. Not far behind him would have been Irvine & O'Neil.
But has a kid he always rated Atwell.
My mum, along with Jimmy Mac would have picked Pointer.

Dad first took me on the Turf when Jimmy Mac was in his prime, but he always maintained that Bob Kelly was an even better player than Mac. All I can say is that Bob Kelly must have been one hell of a player.
