Fergies thoughts on old players.

Post by ebby » Sat Jan 08, 2022 5:16 pm

Just reading Fergie’s book where he is critical about clubs that allow their players average age to become to high, along with having players contracts all coming to the end at virtually the same time. Very poor planning he argues.

Remind you of any team at the moment?

Plenty of us called this 2 or 3 years ago, while most people on here were busy celebrating the contract extensions for old lags like Barnes and Bardsley.

Bringing a player back to the club who was released and who is 34, smacks of desperation. Doesn’t say much for the manager’s ability to coach and give the youth players a chance.
Todays game could and should have been an opportunity to give youth a try, rather than playing older players and other player’s who don’t want to be at our club.

Go see Mr Moneybags Garlick. He might let you count with him.

I think most fans would be glad to see some youth now as the experienced players either are not good enough or too old or couldn’t give one. Everyone is bored with the likes of Wood, Tarkowski and a few more who are underperforming. Give some new blood a run of games and who cares if we go down it should and will be more entertaining. 90 odd million in wages paid out it’s a joke.

I’m a big fan of Wood but admit he’s been very much out of form for much of this season. I’m still not bored with him.

As for Tarkowski, he’s had two very poor games this week but overall he’s been as good as anyone this season.

I haven't read his book, but I'm well aware that he knew when to move players on, and he usually knew when they'd lost their hunger to win, hence why he managed to build 4/5 great Utd teams in his tenure at OT.

He’s probably been our best player this season but he has put himself in the firing line due to running his contract down (nothing wrong with that in my eyes). I fear It’s only going to get worse now until he leaves

Was it the Liverpool saying to let players legs go on someone else's field?

That's what players do unfortunately and that's no reason for fans to turn on them. I do think he had an absolute stinker at Leeds and I'm told he has today. But prior to that I can find no reason to be critical of his performances.

Alex Ferguson, Managing my Life. It's been out a good while, got it from a charity shop.

It should be on every football managers bedside table as required reading.

Well quite a few normal football watching folk off here could see these current things happening 2 or 3 years a back, so I'm not surprised the Premier Leagues most decorated manager did as well.

It doesn't take a mechanic to work out if you drive an ageing car at peak performance for several years it will need parts upgrading and repairs..

Tarks seems to be the newest target of wrath from the terraces. He’s had 2 bad games on the spin, no doubt, but over the course of the season he’s been one of our better performers. Whether his head is currently elsewhere only he knows
