Re: There was no release clause
I don't think it's accepting the amount that is the problem, it's having nothing in place when we have two very big games coming up for our Premier League survival, which is worth far more to the club than Wood's transfer fee.

Re: There was no release clause
I have just read a few reports.
Why would you have a release clause that starts in the last 12 months, as within 6 months you can do a deal when leaving on a free. Then pocket the 25 million in wages yourself. It just does not make sense.

Re: There was no release clause
Get a grip, would be ludicrous to turn down £25m for Wood. He’s 31 this year and out of contract next summer. We should have took the £35m for Tark when we could, who is now going for nothing.

End of hoof ball?
Now with no big striker perhaps it's time to actually play pass and move

They are paying 5 million upfront and the clause in the summer according to other sources. No brainer for me, If we have a replacement then it’s too good of a deal to turn down for an ageing player.

He's a month into 30, lets not pretend he's ready for the knackers yard.
As I understand it, there is a release clause for £20m that can be activated in the summer. Newcastle have agreed to pay £25m to have the offer accepted now. They are paying £5m extra to get him 6 months early.

It was in a mess before Wood went. The squad is stale as he'll, complacency seems to ooze from the players, as if resigned to a fate that is far from certain.PadihamThickNeck wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 12:19 pmVarious media outlets including TalkSPORT now reporting the release clause didn’t come into effect until the summer and Alan Pace accepted the deal voluntarily.![]()

This is going to cause an uproar if we don’t have a replacement ready right away I wouldn’t put it past or blame Dyche for walking.
The club is a mess a really big one.
We need new faces, and if the 25million is used wisely, it could be cracking business.
We need the man, or machine, that found Max, to come up with another gem or two.

Re: Chris Wood having medical at Newcastle
They dont need to be an elite unit, just gain more points than the other three at the bottom which they should quite comfortably. Not nailed on, of course, but they have just improved their chances considerably.
Re: Serious Question RE: Newcastle ££££
I think everyone knew that Newcastle would be splashing out
on a number of players but nobody really expected then to come in for Wood.
We've got good money for him and there's little point in keeping someone
who wants to go and better his lot.
What happens now for us?
I'm sure we'll try and bring someone in that's for sure given we've only
got one fit forward and possibly also a midfielder.
Will the shock of losing Wood galvanise Dyche and the team or
will it have the reverse affect?
We'll soon know after our next two games.

Re: There was no release clause
If we're getting 25 million, it's good business.
We got a few great years from him, made 10 million profit from his sale (obv not including wages), and he's in really bad form.
We have to play him because he's all we've got, but playing him dictates we play a particular style.
Wood leaving, for however much, and being replaced by something else could be a good move for us.

If he did that would be a monumental piece of business.
£20-25m for Chris Wood and a saving of circa £10-12m on having to pot Dyche. That’s the stuff of dreams!
As it happens, I expect Dyche is fully onboard and couldn’t believe that Newcastle wanted him and were prepared to pay so much.
Selling Wood isn’t the issue, that makes sense, the issue and challenge is replacing him.

Re: There was no release clause
It make perfect sense if the clause is in place through the summer, as this is the window we tend to deal in. The reason it's not in place during the season is we struggle to do deals then. This is protecting the club. It's not just for the summer coming up it would have been active for last summer too and all summers since he signed a new deal.Lowbankclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 12:23 pmI have just read a few reports.

3 goals in 17 games this season.
Let’s hope we can buy a younger striker who can get 4 or more over the rest of the season.

£25m for a non scoring striker.
One who can't net an open goal or hit a barn door most of the time.
If he's still looking for a lift, I'll drive him to Newcastle tonight!

The defour era we certainly played a better style of football. He’s got it in him to play football. Everton away last season, few other games here and there where we look brilliant but then back to our usual one dimensional long ball stuff.
excited now wood has gone. Cornet back with a fast younger striker and new midfielder we will be fine….I hope

It really doesn't matter if there was a release clause or not. If the player wants to go and the money is right for us, it's best he goes.
As soon as Wood's agent told him of the interest from the uber-rich, he'll have wanted to go.

Our whole play is built around crosses and long balls over the top. It's not going to change overnight. For this season at least we need a striker who can win the ball and hold play up.

Re: There was no release clause
I wonder if this is the start of the new business model.
We've brought in young players in the summer.
We are offloading older players for money now.
If we replace with younger and cheaper and develop them for later, then maybe this is exactly what Pace had in mind?
I'm concerned to an extent, but I'm not devastated about this by any means

It’s not the strikers who hoof the ball, it’s our weak midfield and often our defenders who do so. I sincerely hope that, in this window, we bring in by buying or on loan, at least two new midfielders who know how to pass the ball forward, move forward with the ball and create chances. If we had Defour and Barton at their best in midfield, I honestly believe we would be comfortably placed in mid table.

To me that is the business model we should operate.
Said it before. We moved away from it after Pope, Tarks etc but we really need to get back to it.

Re: Chris Wood having medical at Newcastle
Based on what? There is no evidence that would support the contention that he will get more crosses. Why does anyone think he will get 7 goals before Wilson is back in the team? He’s gone to a struggling team that have scored 3 more goals than we have, having played two more games. 31 year old Trippier who is just coming back from injury isn’t the golden ticket that people think he is.Dodobdobodobo wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 12:03 pmHe’ll get plenty of crosses too from Saint-Maximin and Almiron on top of Trippier. He will get his 10 goals in the Premiership for the 5th consecutive time and keep Newcastle up.

Re: End of hoof ball?
I agree that this is our style of play but if we spend millions on a striker to continue that style of play - I feel that we will just be making the same mistakes with short term thinking.SalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 12:43 pmOur whole play is built around crosses and long balls over the top. You want pace to stretch teams and make them less comfortable holding a high line for those over the top balls to ease pressure on the defence.
You want pace to run on to those over the top/through balls and get on the end of crosses from the counter.
To buy someone to hold the ball up- May as well keep the money and play Barnes there and have McNeil and Cornet trying to feed off him as well as continuing to try and supply him as we have tried to do for wood.
Don’t get me wrong- if we had the ability to get balls into a big man to hold up- we wouldn’t be selling Wood.
Re: Chris Wood having medical at Newcastle
Wood isn’t going to hit 10 goals by the end of the season. Not a chance.
Good business by us. Hope Pace signs the replacement and not Dyche as if It’s up to Dyche we will end up with Dykes or Moore.

Aside from the fact that Wood had only scored 3 times this season people are overlooking the ZERO Assists.
So, he had hardly struck up a fantastic partnership with Cornet, whatever the "experts" on the Sky Transfer Show want people to believe.

Pretty sure he wanted to go
Pretty sure that the right thing to do is let him go for a decent price
Course, the key here is replacing him before the end of the window

Going to get bombarded with abuse for this but Wood has been that poor this season I’d rather take the cash now and play a U23 who ok might not be premier league level but I’d bet he’d show more energy and desire and aid his development.
That said I do feel they have a proper ready to go replacement in mind.

Re: Chris Wood having medical at Newcastle
Regardless of his form this season losing Wood in isolation is a massive blow and is almost like waving a white flag to staying up this season. However with the money received we need to wait and see what Mr Pace and Dyche do with it.
If they pull off a couple of Cornet level signings in this transfer window including a goal scorer then the fight is back on and it could be a really positive sign of how Mr Pace plans to transform the club. If signings aren't made then regardless of the money received we've pretty much sealed our fate and given up.
On another point around selling to a rival and strengthening them I dont see this as a big problem as such is Newcastle's financially position. Im sure they will have multiple targets lined up (some probably better than Wood) and they were not going to struggle to get someone in sharpish with the money they can throw about.

Burnley, Dyche, Pace . Not even the Queen could prevent this deal going forward. A release clause is just that, the only thing that could stop this is Wood not agreeing personal terms.

Transfer fees
I think the most worrying thing about the Chris Wood transfer is the fee because if he's worth 20-25 million imagine what a decent striker will cost

It took a long time to convince people like yourself that we didn't score enough goals and needed a shake-up in the striker department.
Sunk in now has it??

No. Until the first half of this season our strikers have scored enough goals. It has always been goals from midfield we were lacking.kentonclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 1:56 pmIt took a long time to convince people like yourself that we didn't score enough goals and needed a shake-up in the striker department.
