I get your point regarding Palace but the money they spent is still far beyond our means. They spent upwards of 80 million before this season got underway, coupled with the 20 million the season before on Eze, that's 100 million. Can you see us ever being able to spend like that?
They had the summer we needed.

Signed players that they needed in positions that needed strengthening. As much as our window was a positive one it didn’t resolve any of our key issues. Olise for 8m was a big one we missed out on, would have been perfect for us.

Why would Olise, a creative flair player, want to join a rigid 4-4-2 to have it sucked out of him? No chance. Hence why we got rejected by Ryan Christie in favour of Bournemouth.

If the board are not getting the targets they want Carrol would be sensible signing. Hes a player who can ‘hold fort’ in that position.

That said, if we are selling first team players (albeit via release clauses) without having any decent, long term replacements in mind, then we’re in trouble.

Fair comment but these are the type of player we desperately need

And yet the “experts” on here I remember were dooming CP because they were losing all their players, had a “rookie” manager like they’d been watching Ted Lasso and whoever they signed would never “gel”

Agree, would love to see those types here - firstly to play some good football and excite fans, secondly to have genuine sell on value to keep this club running sustainably. We’ve done it with Cornet under ALK so far, let’s see if they can deliver on a few more this window. That’s why I’m against another journeyman (Carroll) signing despite the situation we are in, not only does it mean a continuation of the crap football we are seeing but he’s scored like 2 goals in the past 2 seasons.

Probably the same "experts" that think we don't play long ball or direct football, and probably the ones that still don't think we are on a terrible run of form as our results have just been unlucky or down to poor refereeing.

Some lose sight of football and what it really is watching Burnley and listening to all the clichés.
They start to believe the excuses week after week, and nodding along.

I suspect Carroll will be a 6 month contract, if that’s allows us to sign someone like Fofana then I think it’s a fair trade. We have got to address midfield this window.

I’m not expecting Carroll to do anything other than to give knockdowns for Cornet.

Or more likely ‘the least worst option available’. Conversely you’ve got the galaxy brains convinced we’ll magic the next Mbappe out of nowhere when for all their millions Newcastle came up with Chris Wood.
Never understood this point.

If the logic of this was correct every club would be trying to sign every player.

Clues identify different players that fit their requirements all the time. Because Newcastle haven’t found anybody doesn’t mean to say no other clubs can.

After this week, if we could get a 33 year old Costa and a 33 year old Carroll on a short term with a view, AND have 20m in the bank, I would literally **** myself to sleep as I know their experience would be enough. Plus, Mardy arse Woods gone and cash to spend in the summer!

Surely Newcastle fans wouldn't sleep for laughing if they nicked Wood off us and then unloaded the hapless Carroll and his huge ego, wages and elbows onto us. I was never Wood's biggest fan and right now I'm thinking we COULD turn the situation to our advantage with Toon having paid well over the odds for a very pedestrian striker and us being in a position to use that money to freshen things up and kick start our season, but Andy (bloody) Carroll!!!?? Crumbs. 😕

Andy Carroll is currently at Reading but his contract finishes on Saturday I believe. He was on a two month contract to prove his fitness

I really hope we don’t try and sign him. I would say he his mid table championship level but even that might be a stretch. I can only assume it’s to come in to replace Pieters leaving in the summer.
Or Ben Mee!

If we’re looking at extending our run of prem games without a sending off, then signing Andy Carroll is not the player we should be signing🤔

No it doesn’t but time is a key factor here and we don’t have it. It may be that we do have players identified, but are they available now? Maybe we planned for the summer, we obviously didn’t expect to lose Wood like we have so we’re in a position where we need something now, not 6 months time.

Newcastle had the advantage with how much money they can throw at a situation. £25m for Chris Wood is an extraordinary amount to pay, if you just look at the player in isolation. The wider context obviously changes that somewhat.

I’m not saying what applies for one club applies to all. Far from it. Newcastle had a limited amount of time to identify a target and a much bigger budget to do so. And they signed Chris Wood. We now have even less time, a smaller budget, and everyone now knows we’re desperate. Whatever recruitment plans we had for forward department clearly don’t apply now. Otherwise we wouldn’t be getting linked with Carroll.

We managed to get Andre Gray on quite quick notice if I remember correctly. We should just be throwing whatever we can afford at someone we know will score goals.

Andy Carroll is not the answer.

Andy Carroll yes from me, remember Joey Barton being rumored? this board went into meltdown,
He's a d***h***
I'll never go on again if we sign him blah blah blah
By the time he left us people would have given him their wife's for an hour.
Carroll maybe just maybe might have the same impact, he will certainly give us something different (and he is different than Wood) remember its January not the summer.

If we are looking at a striker who can upset the opposition defence, then I hate to say it but we could get Keiffer Moore of Cardiff for around £6m. Not my first choice, but we need someone yesterday. The thought of playing Leicester & Watford with just Rodriguez available as a genuine striker is more depressing than losing Wood without a replacement

Counted has goals no but he still put them in the net, first one offside yes, second one he wasn't offside, the keeper didn't know they were going to be chalked off and he couldn't do anything about the ball hitting the back of the net, allowed or not these are technically good strikes

We can't suddenly change our whole squad's ability and way of playing in January. No point bringing in a technical small striker, if our whole game plan is built around being direct. The rest of our players are able to play direct, they aren't suddenly going to turn into Man City.

Summer is the time to change the game plan
Totally agree with you. We will have to bring in a similar player to Wood for the rest of the season, not sure who but to try and change our system of play now would definitely end in relegation.

With a good target man you can still play some decent football. They just need to be able to hold up the ball and bring others into play.

Carroll certainly has the ability but you just can't rely on his fitness. From what I've read he just doesn't look after himself enough to keep fit.

Sorry but with these player's and possibly Dyche in charge this team only knows hoof football, we can't change that with half a season to play, the club needs a reset possibly over the summer, new players (about 6), new formation and possibly a new manager this is not an over night fix and if you think it is and we can do this before the season ends then you're going to be disappointed

I agree but we appear desperate-who do you think we could/should get within the next 4 days (the Wood move broke news Tuesday night and he had signed first thing Thursday). Bear in mind the need for a striker has been there for some months-so no time for any foreplay at this point

I might be alone but I think Jay Rod will do the business for us now he’ll have a run of games.

I couldn't give a shinny shite about extending our run of prem games without a sending off, I'm more interested in extending our run in the premier league full stop.
Exactly. After people complaining there’s no fight in the last 3 games, and 2 wins in 2021, if we signed those 2 and ended up with 9 men and won, I’d be happy af.

Not an earthly that Newcastle would allow him to come to us on those terms!!!
Newcastle can do alot but they can't dictate a free agents wage.

He’s not at newcastle?
I wonder why Newcastle didn’t resign him rather than wasting £25 million on Wood? Emmm…

Totally agree with you. We will have to bring in a similar player to Wood for the rest of the season, not sure who but to try and change our system of play now would definitely end in relegation.
Sure, because what we are doing this season has been working really well for us?

Because they have money to burn and can dent a relegation rival in a fight to stay up

Carroll is an upgrade on Driftwood, at least he’s got a bit of fight in him. Just ask his Mrs.
