None of it will end well there are war crimes on both sides all of which could end up in the Hague when it all unravels at the end.

Re: Russia Invades
I've just been listening to a BBC correspondent from Kyiv, he said the shelters there are emptying out very quickly with people choosing to leave - hence the quick rise in refugee numbers over the last few days. I just can't see a way here where it doesn't escalate to such a degree that the option of watching from afar becomes increasingly difficult to justify. Look at the last 2 or 3 years and now thisLancasterclaret wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:25 pmAll this is doing is turning 45 million Ukrainians into absolutely hating Russia

They've mentioned on the radio the other day what the ratio of soldiers to civilians needs too be, I've just forgotten it, I just know the expert said even before the invasion began the army wasn't big enough.

Not necessarily. Biden is under pressure to sanction the opening of closed oil fields and several new ones he’s been sitting on - on the back of his Buy America First Address speech. Re: Russia Invades
Why doesn’t Ukraine join NATO immediately? As soon as they are members then NATO can demand that Russia withdraw from Ukraine or they will be removed by the combined military power of Europe and the U.S.
Putin would be furious and threaten all sorts of Armageddon like scenarios including nuclear war but (imo) the reality ‘on the ground’ is Russia will have to either fight a non-nuclear ‘traditional’ war or withdraw.

The strange thing about this war, is I've never felt, and still don't, feel like we are at war with Russia. The Russian people aren't to blame for this, and I don't believe ordinary Ukrainians will blame ordinary Russians. This is one despots last throw of the dice, to hold on to an outdated ideology.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 4:25 pmAll this is doing is turning 45 million Ukrainians into absolutely hating Russia

All this is doing is guaranteeing hatred for Russia from Ukraine, and reawakening that hatred in the old Eastern European states

Then let them drastically escalate in the short term until Russia is thrown out of Ukraine. This is 2022 not 1922, if we carry on standing by wringing our hands in fear of nuclear war then tens of thousands of innocent civilians and innocent soldiers will die.

Weapons that are so much more devastating than 1922.
Putin is stark raving mad, as shown by his comments in the last few hours.
You might be willing to sacrifice millions, but the rest of us aren't.
Re: Russia Invades
I was always ambivalent towards nuclear weapons, however when you have a cowardly bully with them it would be insane for us not to have them.
Regarding the US buying Russian oil I read a report earlier that the big US importers have stopped, the Russians are discounting the oil, there is a glut of it but no takers.

I was all for calling Putin’s bluff at the start, but the sanctions are proving far more effective than I would have previously believed. So long as we get on with supplying quietly and ramp up the pressure again soon or the signs coming out of Russia are that Russians are increasingly unhappy as realisation spreads.Mala591 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 03, 2022 5:46 pmThen let them drastically escalate in the short term until Russia is thrown out of Ukraine. Not so good news, Putin is telling Russians that Russia and Ukrainians are one people
The fact that 45 million Ukrainians don't want that is complicating that a tad
Oh, and apparently the operation is all going according to plan
Lots and lots of videos from various parts of the front suggest that is about as far from the truth as its possible to be
(not posting a lot of them because there are very clearly bodies of dead Russian soldiers in them)

I think any civilian men remaining in Ukraine need to take up arms, civilian areas are being targeted and cities being bombed to the ground while we keep seeing stories like ''civilian roadblocks stopping tanks'', it's about time the civilians weren't stopping the tanks but decimating them and the people inside.
