Surely though, a psychological boost to Ukrainian troops and massive morale-destroying blow to Russians fighting elsewhere to hear their 64 mile convoy had been destroyed?Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 9:22 amThey don't have to
That equipment is useless sitting there
It might as well be destroyed
That link further up the thread explains it all
As the author says, its not going to be combat effective now for some time, and I bet the Ukrainians are targeting the rear of the convoy (the only bit that can move) so it can't move
Wheeled transport can't operate off road in Russia in March. It is completely bizarre that the actual Russian army has forgotten that.

I would guess the Ukrainians have limited resources and would prefer to use them in better ways - defending Kviv for example.

Presumably though, by destroying that major offensive from the North, you prevent an attack on Kviv?
And also I’d have thought it would only take a couple of planes worth of missiles to do the whole lot?

The Ukraines will know best as they will have a better idea of what is going on then we will. Their judgement may be that that convoy presents no immediate risk to the capital - perhaps it really has run out of fuel and there is no other way for the Russians to move it or its contents.
Maybe the Ukraines don't have 'a couple of planes worth of missiles' in the vicinity, or anywhere.

Re: Russia Invades
Daft as it sounds they may opt to attack it when it's been refueled to hopefully destroy even more resources. Who knows.

The convoy is obviously not a threat at the moment, it just seems like an open goal and one Ukraine may regret not taking if they somehow get it moving. Only reason I can think of is that it’s destroying morale/confidence and causing such tensions, that it’s better to sit watching them score own goals before putting the boot in. Could also provoke a reaction from Putin to mercilessly take them all out so possibly better to watch them all starve as a result of their own incompetence than swoop in and put them out of their misery.
Re: Russia Invades
Russia won't honour the agreement of a ceasefire for the second time, they've flattened a civilian airport with rockets, they've blown up a bridge killing 3 people trying to escape and they are now bombing schools, hospitals and civilian buildings. This isn't a just a war, it's obscene in this day and age. How long can the west watch on and wait for sanctions to have an affect, even then there are some sanctions they won't impose because it will affect the west's economy.
I just hope Poland give Ukraine aircraft to at least give them a fighting chance. Poland want to be less dependent on eastern weapons so let Ukraine have the MIG's and let the US replace them with western planes.

Re: Russia Invades
On the convoy, bear in mind there may be a sound reason why its destruction might not be possible at the moment. But let's assume it's actually possible. I think that deciding you want a convoy destroyed then concocting a military justification for its destruction is bad strategy. The strategic value of committing resources to destroying it should always precede the desire to wipe it out. My thoughts on it are that a convoy debilitated by the logistical ineptitude of Russian military leadership (or rather, military leadership only ever saying "yes, sir" to Putin, in spite of the flaws in his command and grasp of logistics) lands a greater psychological blow to the Russians than does the convoy being destroyed by the Ukrainians. Destruction represents a battlefield setback from which the Russians would seek to recover. Ineptitude brings into question how well planned the invasion actually is, damaging the trust Russian soldiers have in the leadership and the invasion plan. Indeed, many soldiers already have had that trust abused by being told they were taking part in military exercises, only to be sent to a battlefield!
There's also the fact that, should the convoy be abandoned rather than annihilated, there's the possibility for Ukrainian civilians to 'liberate' these Russian vehicles. Some top banter — Ukrainians have been told by the govt they don't have to declare these captures on their taxes. No import taxes payable. Consider the possibility that this war eventually cools down and the Russians are pushed back, even for a time being; the Russians planned for a fight with the Ukrainian military and armed civilians. If you let civilians tow away the entire convoy at their pleasure and supply them with fuel and tyres, now many of those civilians have access to armoured vehicles. Putting the Ukrainian military aside, Ukraine now has a militia armed close to matching that of the Russian army. If the invasion turns out to be a blunder, it'll be nothing short of madness to do it again in the future when the farmers have tanks. They'll be the most tooled up militia in Europe.

Analysis from the British about that convoy

Ukrainian troops taking out one, possibly two T-72s, location unknown

I have absolutely no idea why Russian tanks are just sitting there, without an infantry screen, and they are essentially sitting ducks to groups of infantry with anti-tank weapons

Re: Russia Invades
Think one or two may be over thinking the convoy - it is sitting there like a great big lump of cheese. Suggestions it’s commander was taken out by a Ukrainian sniper before they got any orders and no attempt to move it suggests the Russians are hoping to sucker some attempt from the resistance.
