Only thing I would say about that is the Russians are already making huge efforts not to repatriate their fallen. I suspect that when that becomes common knowledge (if it does) then it will be even more damaging than returning loads of body bags.

I do wonder if the reason not to give Ukraine jets is the strong belief that they don't actually need them

I would imagine that the Russians cannot count on the fighting effectiveness of too many of their troops, and the ones they can rely on will have to lead the attacks, with the rather obvious conclusion that they will have less and less of them each attack
I read some where today , perhaps a link on here that they had taken mobile crematorium facilities.

So they've taken out maternity and childrens wards at a hospital in Mariupol with air strikes. Nothing random about that and the lowest of the low. How long can the West in all honesty stand by and let his happen, at least give them the damn planes the Poles are offering and give them a fighting chance.

I have to admit I've been in tears a few times watching some of the reports and stories on TV with a feeling of helplessness yet complete admiration for the brave Ukranians. I really don't know why I feel this way and am bothered about something happening so far away when I'm cocooned in my nice warm home retired and financially comfortable. Maybe because it shouldn't happen in this day and age and seems totally pointless.

Because you have a heart. Like I mentioned on the previous page, it's bad enough killing/injuring adults, but children, and children who are in hospital - not sure there's anything possibly worse a human can do.

More signs that sanctions are having an effect - after digging into reserves once today, Putin is to meet Government to talk over further steps that can be taken… ( doubt anyone will be brave enough to tell him to resign)

I think we have said the same, so this is not me having a go. It not irrational, it just very difficult.

The EU uses around 45% of it gas and oil from Russia. Now what I do know is when mankind is faced with a major issue can do extraordinary things quickly.

Its very easy to say "Stop Russian oil right now"

Its not easy to carry it out

Long term, they are reducing their reliance on Russian oil and gas, and that is a good thing

And they are helping Ukraine in other ways too

Wonder if think like I do Saudi has scored a long term own goal here, it has refused to increase production. The west has suddenly woken up to the fact that supplies cannot be relied on.

This conflict which is horrible, might just have done more for renewables than 26 COP’s.

Short term this conflict is bad for climate change.

Long term it's not so clear. Repairs to Ukraine will require lots of cement (bad). Many people may now feel that climate change is not so important as security, and of course fuel security. Finances will also be further damaged after Covid leaving us less flexibility to deal with the costs of changing the economy.

When/if the dust settles our governments are going to have a lot of tough and painful decisions to make which could lead to riots and the like.

As for the Saudis et al, surely they will be trying to get as much out of their oil while they can. What do they offer when we no longer need it?

And yes I still think there will be need for oil for plastics - another thing we have to wean ourselves off if we can.

Short term maybe but I think it is likely the long term result will be a massive move to sustainable energy and self reliance. I should image less landfill and more recycling of plastic will quickly be on the agenda.

Not strictly true, OPEC have ruled it out twice at least after official approaches. Which is why Biden is moving to open/re-open America’s own production (in a about face policy turn).

Just to add it has even been speculated that Iran may see this as a way to get their own sanctions removed, but those who discuss these issues think it unlikely, as it would suit Putin to see Iran back on the international stage.

Talk from Biden about domestic production is cheap. I'll believe it when I see it. His policy the entire time he ran for office and since his inauguration has been to hamper domestic production. Yesterday his press secretary tried to blame producers for not drilling on 9000 approved leases. Which have been explored and don't have cost effective, drillable oil. But I hope to be proven wrong.

The one step I've seen him take that I believe is making friends with Venezuela to get some oil from there. That's also hard to believe considering who their government is, but beggar's can't be choosers I guess.

Russia allowing civilians to leave major Ukraine cities before they flatten them and murder all the remaining innocent Ukrainians.

Europe and U.S. stand by wringing their hands in despair.

Admit Ukraine into NATO immediately and stop this genocide before it’s too late!
It must be difficult banging the same drum over and over knowing full well what the reply is going to be. Give it a rest, it’s been discussed at length.

Russia admitting there are conscripts that have been sent to Ukraine, but that they are all back in Russia, apart from a logistics unit that got ambushed

Laying the ground work for trying to explain the losses?

Pretty clear as well that Russia isn't being able to control the information getting through to the general population

Not good

Russia has massive previous for using chemical weapons in Syria (which people were more than happy to blame on the Israelis) but if they do this then that is a massive escalation which NATO would have to react to

Russia admitting there are conscripts that have been sent to Ukraine, but that they are all back in Russia, apart from a logistics unit that got ambushed

Laying the ground work for trying to explain the losses?

Pretty clear as well that Russia isn't being able to control the information getting through to the general population
Couple of days ago I watched CNN, they did a piece on the Ukrainians opening a phone line for Russians concerned about loved ones. They played several accounts of Mums, dads etc played on TV asking for info about loved ones they could no longer get hold off.
This whole thing is sad for both sides.

He signed his ‘fist’ deal with Exxon a couple of days ago, others are under review, I believe.
That sounds promising, but I don't know what a fist deal is. I've tried looking it up since your post and can't find anything, but I'm sure that's my error. Can you elaborate a bit or be kind enough to provide a link.

Sorry, I know a lot of times that's a bit of a passive aggressive move, but I am sincere. I have looked without any luck. All I see is where Exxon pulled out of Sakhalin Island on March 1st.

Thanks.

It is mentioned I think on this thread (in fact I know it is, I posted it). It was announced after the fuel Trucker protest, but agreed before… one commentator dryly commented words to the effect that was just enough to mitigate the protest.

I WILL ALSO APOLOGISE AGAIN FOR ANY TYPOES, besides trying to keep the thread up to date, I am also decorating and talking to clients regarding work and sifting University prospectus’s with a view to doing my masters/doctorate… so I may not be as on the ball re-reading my own posts as I normally am.

Is this true re: starstreak ? Very serious kit indeed ,though these are not “ plug n play “ like a stinger . You’d need a lot of trained up soldiers but boy do these beauties lock on .

Re: US sanctions , they need neither gas or oil , though corporate America totally pulling its ops may cause problems after a couple of months
They are considering it alarge when I left they were looking at introducing an auto track facility but I don’t know if it was ever introduced. I’m sure it would not have been introduced on Shoulder Launched or LML versions which I suspect Ukraine will get if we decide to send. Anyway it isn’t I throw away thing but you guide the missile on it is actually fairly simple when you take away the safety side of it.
