Re: Russia Invades
some extracts from an old colleague, it really is heartbreaking:
It is heartbreaking to see the terrible toll the war in the Ukraine has on the people in the major cities. The attack on the theater in Mariupol is a horrible example how innocent women and children suffer the most.
This week I was able to visit our Damen Shipyard in Galati Rumania which is located right at the Ukrainian border. This is from where we coordinate the escape and receive the refugees from our Damen engineering office MDEM in Mykolaiv. So far over 300 employees and family members, mostly women and children, have been able to make the long journey to safety. A specially formed team at the yard is monitoring and coordinating each individual car journey, advising routes, receiving them at the border, arranging housing and all other immediate needs such as healthcare.
I was able to visit them at various locations in Galati and listening to their emotional stories of fear, stress and uncertainty. The spouse of one of our colleagues told me how she is worried sick about the well-being of her husband. She hadn’t heard from him for several hours, the windows were blown out of their house and last she knew is that he had struggles to find a good place to stay. I spoke to a mother of three who explained she and her kids had slept in the concrete basement for days, clothes on, cold and humid, poor ventilation, miserable, so tired. Another colleague worried about an aging mother who didn’t want to leave. Fighting in Mykolaiv is already happening but what the refugees feared most is that the fate of civilians will be similar to that of the current civilian population in Mariupol.
The journey from Mykolaiv to Galati takes normally about 7 hours. It is now 36 hours with many roadblocks, armed soldiers, long lines at the border and that under the constant threat of attack.
Let me finish this post with a positive story. When the first bombs started to come down on Mykolaiv the heavily pregnant wife of one of our employees decided she had to be evacuated, she told me how she made the entire journey and only 2 days after arrival to safety gave birth to a beautiful daughter. She is now safe and staying in the welcoming home of a Rumanian young family. May this last story be a glimmer of hope to all.

Whilst Ukraine firing into Russia to give them a taste of it seems like something I'd do if I was them, it would possibly turn public opinion in the rest of the world against them and make them appear as bad as the Russians. Atm they have the high moral ground and the indignation of basically (almost) the entirel planet on their side.

Thing is, you can conduct defence with a lot less capability than offence, so they could perhaps hang on, but I just don't know
But like yourself I am reading just about every Twitter thread posted on here.
The towns they say they have captured, they are leaving a very minimal force in those towns as they don’t have number of troops to do anything else.
Look at the video of Kharkiv, the protesters were fronted up by about 30-40 armed troops. It’s an opinion, but I think that’s about all the troops they will have left there. I read a troop report that Russian troops were taking villages and then moving on without leaving holding troops and were then being attacked from the rear. So they leave either none or few troops.
They are way over stretched here.
As Elwa just posted Sweden sending more anti tank missiles, they must have 4 for each tank in Ukraine.
If as being reported many troops are getting frost bite, that’s going dent moral even further.
I am hoping this the week is the week that the Russia held territory maps start to shrink slightly.

Re: Russia Invades
I think we know that the west are providing up to date satellite intelligence.
Plus they are apparently texting Russian troops about how to surrender.
There are loads of commas being released , so I think they will have up to date info.
Then there is video footage from captured towns.
I also think people in captured towns still have mobile phones so can be calling in with intelligence.
I get the feeling Russia is trying to fight a 40’s war. But is finding the modern information outlets mean it’s no where to hide.
I made this up as a for instance, Russia states it taken X town. In the 40’s no one would know how many troops are holding that town and would not attack.
Today one person with a mobile can let troops know it’s only 20 troops holding the town and exactly where they are. Hence towns easily retaken.
Remember Russia when it invaded had 1 troop for every 144 Ukrainians, that’s probably now 1 to every 190-200 Ukrainians.
In 4 weeks time that will be 1 to 400 Ukrainians and Russia lost Afghanistan with 1 to 9 Afghans.

But Russia is an artillery heavy army, with lots of tanks and a pretty good tech recon level
If they can be adequately supplied, and if they are dug in, they will be hard to shift, and a stalemate might be the best they can now hope for
I'm not saying we in the West don't get distracted easily, but this thread has more than one example of a successful Russian disinformation campaign on it, and they will desperately hoping for that amplifying the longer this goes on.

My son returned from a short break in Poland two days ago. He stayed in Krakow and visited Auschwitz. He was staggered by the number of American soldiers walking the streets (and at Auschwitz).
Not sure if this footage has already been posted. It's like looking at pictures of Berlin in 1945. There are no civilians shown.

For me that’s where switchblade drones come in. They fly in and deliver targeted strikes on dig in armour. From what I have read the 300 can do minor damage to armourments will kill or injure anyone near by. The 600 wil take out armoured vehicles or artillery guns. I am just hoping they are sending more than they said. Interestingly the switchblade manufacturer has a statement on its website saying they stand with Ukraine.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 8:01 pmGet all that

The Russians digging in will certainly help the Ukrainian military ,as they, the Ukrainian military, will be well supplied, one way or another. It will not help the Ukrainian civilians as they appear to be Russia's main target.

Re: Russia Invades
Unbelievable front and pisstake from Russia....just trying to stall things again for whatever reason they can make up....unless they are asking for humanitarian aid for their troops. When all the dust settles I so hope there is some way of bringing all these murderers to book.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 9:15 pmHey up, someone desperately needs to buy some time to reorganise….

Re: Russia Invades
Russia stalling for time, they've already lost more troops in one month than they did in just over nine years during the Afghanistan conflict, Russia aren't the army they try and pretend to the rest of the world they are, captured Russian soldiers have been found badly equipped and with food rations from 2016 and medical supplies dated 1979, poorly maintained vehicle's just being left behind, tactics from the 1940's and troops suffering from frost bite because of inadequate clothing.

Re: Russia Invades
Defending is defending I agree but defending in an enemy country unfamiliar to you with long logistic lines and a local enemy, and perhaps low moral, is something else.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 3:11 pmI don't know what Russia is going to do when its army hits the stage where it is operational incapacitated
Thing is, you can conduct defence with a lot less capability than offence, so they could perhaps hang on, but I just don't know

Berlin 1945:ecc wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 8:14 pmMy son returned from a short break in Poland two days ago. He stayed in Krakow and visited Auschwitz. He was staggered by the number of American soldiers walking the streets (and at Auschwitz).
Not sure if this footage has already been posted. It's like looking at pictures of Berlin in 1945. There are no civilians shown.
