Interesting game. Looked very much like a game between 2 teams one of whom have one flip flop on ready for the beach. Undoubtedly, a re-invigorated squad - can't deny that .

Pope 8 - some great saves again
Roberts 8 - best game so far - great goal
Collins 8 - as above
Tarkowski 8 - solid
Taylor 7 - up and down like a clockwork mouse
McNeil 7 - seems to be unshackled to some extent
Brownhill 7 - some good moment - some not so good
Cork 8 - really makes a difference
Cornet 5 - strange game - carries a threat but too often ran into blind alleys
Rodriguez 7 - clever player lacks a yard perhaps
Weghorst 6 - 6 foot 6, scores 1 in 2 in the Bundesliga but seems to do his best work as a kind of number 10. No co-incidence two defenders scored.

It would be churlish not to say that the gamblers throw of the dice seems to be paying off so far, albeit, we have had a number of false dawns this season.

Always try and leave it until the next day before doing my ratings to try and take the emotion out of it. However, on reflection, were excellent all over the pitch last night. Played some really good football. Makes you wonder where we’d be if we’d played this ‘style’ all season….because these players can play.

The last two performances have been very very good. I found Roberts postmatch comments regarding having more freedom and not being coached everyday interesting.

Little bits and bobs will start to surface over the next few weeks I feel which will show the direction of travel between Pace and Dyche

Superb effort and teamwork. Players really helping and encouraging each other. Galvanised by the situation. no one else to blame after manager goes.

Pope 8 - Good when called upon. Relieved pressure with the classic high ball collections

Roberts 9 - Really looked to play more freely than permitted previously. what we need at home against team like this.
Collins 8 - Thought the goal was a foul but glad it wasn't.
Tarkowski 8 - Looked a real leader tonight.
Taylor 8 - Superb block. not quite sure how he got back to make it.

McNeill 8 - Revitalised. Similar to Robert, played with more freedom.
Brownhill 7 - Solid
Cork 8 - Excellent at keeping it all ticking, moving the ball around, breaking up play when required. Led the midfield.
Cornet 7 - Always a threat and worked hard.

Rodriguez 7 - Another leader. Playing with a point to prove perhaps?
Weghorst 6 - Some nice link up play but quiet overall.

Pope 8 Good distribution with his throws. Great and vital save just after we thought we'd gone three up
Roberts 8 Very good going forward as epitomised straight from the kick off 2nd half. Excellent goal. Would he have had a 'pop' in previous games?
Collins 9 Has a lot going for him. Solid in defence and a threat in the air on set pieces.
Tarkowski 9 A classic showing of leadership. CerInly putting himself in the shop window for his future.
Taylor 8 Incredible level of fitness. A real honest pro. Just got caught once or twice.with careless.passes.
McNeil 9 Not a right winger, I said. What do I know? Grew into the game and teased and tormented the left side of their defence with close ball skills and 'drops' of the shoulder
Cork 9 Unsung hero last night. Passed the ball well and gave protection to the back line.
Brownhill 8 Thought he might be a little subdued being on nine bookings. Wrong again! Worked hard all over the pitch and combined well with Roberts and McNeil.
Cornet 7 Becoming an enigma but another who enjoyed seeing the ball being passed around. Would always be in my starting eleven because his goals so far have warned the opposition what he is capable of.
Weghorst 8 Ran himself into the ground. Should have scored at least one but again far more effective with the ball near his feet.
J Rod 8 Put in a big shift last night. A good footballer in the true sense of the word and giving the impression that his own team are not going down without a scrap
Lennon 6 and Vydra 6 Both came on with a particular job to do and that was close down any threat from the visitors
Lowton Was he on long enough to score? Some sloppy passes down his side of the pitch

Still not convinced which situation is more favourable to the players. Four points in front or four behind. Suppose four points in front is the obvious answer but I'm wondering if that encourages playing ' safe football' which can frustrate the supporters at times and lead to nervy performances. Huge pressure on the players shoulders last night with what they are facing and they came through it commendably.

Not going to post any ratings just yet other than for Brownhill. He was really poor when he came on at West Ham and I gave him a 5. Last night he had a really decent game and I would rate him 8 or 9 out of 10.

Pope 9 great hands, a really important stop, and that pass from a goal kick was Edison esc

Roberts 9 really well taken goal, and 1st half had some great interplay with McNeil and Brownhill
Collins 9 solid, this guy is class and should go to the very top, he will be a Rools Royce of a defender
Tarkowski 8
Taylor 9 some great last man headers, snd that block/tackle! Certainly could've been a game changer if it'd have gone in

McNeil 9 wowzers, MOM display from Dwight, best game in ages, I often call him for choosing the wrong option too often, I'm think he chose the right one every time tonight, passing, dribbling, linking uo and shooting, looked like a new player. Hopefully the Dwight of old is back.
Brownhill 8 he does give it away, and often has a silly pass or cross thst hit the stands, but 2 assists, lots of creativity, and his corners caused a lot of issues too. He looks a lot better with Corn next to him.
Cork 8 did a lot of the ugly stuff, and went about his business well, even after the early booking. Adds some composure and the ability to find a claret shirt in the CM area
Cornet 7 a quiet one for him, took too long too often or his plan got telegraphed

JayRod 7 worked hard, unlucky not to score with the Forster wonder save , always gives 110%
Wout 8 so many nearly, the guy could have had a couple himself, think he's still adapting to the PL pace, and the lack of time in the 18 yard box, but a lot of good things he was involved with tonight, linked very well.

Not with those scores you didn’t.
If you thought that was a 7/10 performance you must have thought most matches we’ve played this season had noone over a 5

Well thats how i saw it buddy. 8-)

If Romeu would have popped them 2 headers in and it finished 2-2 everyone would mark players 2 points less and the usual throbbers and sulkers would dish out 3s n 4s as they usually do when its not a good result.

I mark the performance not the result.

Claretmov marked Collins 10 - out of this world really? OUT OF THIS WORLD?

And if Forster didn't have the game of his life and the post kept one out it would of been 6-0 and they all would of got 10

Pope 9

Roberts 9
Collins 9
Tarkowski 9
Taylor 9

McNeil 9 (-1 for whoever thought it was a good idea to have him marking Romeu at corners)
Brownhill 8
Cork 8
Cornet 8 (+1 for the level of fear he gives defenders, even when things aren’t going for him)

Rodriguez 7 - looked bright but needs to relax a bit more in the box, still trying too hard to deliver
Weghorst 7 - We need to learn how to play to his strengths
[/quote]

Vydra - would love to see him alongside WW when he’s fully fit, I think they could be dynamite together.

EXTRA BONUS POINTS - for the number of smiles on players faces, even before we scored.
A smile on your face, and a smile in your boots as a great man once said.

Pope - 8 - made a couple of excellent saves and handled well throughout.

Roberts - 9 - that's the best I've seen him play. Committee defensively and tidy going forwards and of course scored a splendid goal.

Taylor - 7 - nice and dynamic and used the ball fairly well, although he got caught in possession rather more than he would like.

Collins - 9 - showed his pace a number of times and dominant in the air in both boxes. Calmer in possession then he was been.

Tarkowski- 8 - solid and dependable.

Cork - 9 - showed once again why Dyche's refusal to play him was so inexplicable. Unfussy, efficient and precise in possession allowed us to play to feet far more.

Brownhill- 8 - full of energy, and his running off the ball into forward areas was integral to creating the space for McNeil and Weghorst to flourish - and he used the ball smartly too.

McNeil - 9 - i don't think he's been playing that badly and much of his possession play simply continued the work hes been doing but but given the ball to feet, and given runners off him to create space and options, he looked happier and you could see the confidence returning. The team performance allowed him to get that ball to feet higher, which inevitably means he's more dangerous.

Cornet- 7 - a bit hit and miss and his possession play will always be a bit erratic but he carried a threat and his direct running complimented the prompting of Weghorst and McNeil.

Rodriguez- 8 - unlucky not to score, but involved plenty and did a lot of selfless work getting back into midfield and covering Cornet in particular.

Weghorst- 8 - really should have scored and we need him to be more clinical but given smoother possession his link up game was a joy.

Lennon - 6 - busy and got up and down.

Vydra - 6 - got stuck in for the cause even if by that time our attacking ambitions were more limited.

Well whatever has gone on in the past 10 days, this was undoubtedly a marked departure from the increasingly percentage football that marked the last months of Dyche's reign. Our achilles heel all season has been a lack of respect for retaining and using the ball precisely, yet particularly in the first half we did that with a poise not seen since they heyday of Defour.

It wasn't perfect - the first 6 or 7 minutes were a bit hairy, and Taylor in particular was guilty of overplaying in the wrong areas at times, whilst then organisation at set plays needs work before Sunday. But it does provide a template for the remaining games and whilst its still a long shot, if we replicate it we will stand a far better chance of surviving than we would replicating the style and level of performance shown against either Everton or Norwich.
