Barnes and Jay scored a total of 3 goals between them last season, and even in the Champ I wouldn't rely on either being prolific.

However if the funds aren't there to buy newbies, I guess we're limited as to how many older pro's we can afford to let go, and in Ashley's case if he's triggered his extension clause, then the club are duty bound to honour it.

At least both these guys know what the Championship entails, and as much as I'd like us to blood some youth, we can't simply jettison all our senior players, particularly without the required funds to replace them all.

Like a new signing

He'll get firing on all cylinders in the Champ. Just the kind of player we need!

I think people are getting wrapped up in stats. All of our strikers were starved of goal scoring opportunities last season. If we create more, they’ll score more. I think Jay will star next season.

I think Barnes is a very decent finisher but as with all our strikers has little to no service. If Kompany can sort that out he could easily hit 15 in the Championship

Wonder where he's going to get a better deal?

He'll do very well to get a Prem move.
Two year deal and a signing on fee from a Championship club would be better than a one year with us

He also, along with Mee, has inside knowledge of what is happening throughout the club

Maybe he just doesn't fancy it ?

If he knew where he was then he must be like one of my old schoolteachers who always said he had eyes in the back of his head.
Anyone playing football at a decent level doesn't need 'to have eyes in the back of their head' to know where an opponent is. You know that and to infer he didn't is discrediting the professional ability of the player in question. He plays 'on the edge', no problem for me but in this instance he got away with a nasty foul. Anyway, all water under the bridge ....... until.the next time.

Disappointing news is this. We need to do better. Our 2 strikers are not at all prolific.

Surprised some Clarets are upset that Barnes is staying?
Why??
He is a great forceful character in the dressing room and a good example to the new young players who will be coming in.
Still has Premiership qualities and very adaptable.
Good squad player who will cause mayhem in championship defences.
Must be in Kompany's plans if we are led to believe he is imminently coming.
So why the doubt??

Barnes had fitness issues for a long while, as a bench player there is a chance he could put that behind him, not too taxing 20 mins here and there.

Also, apart from possibly Tarky, he showed more desire than anyone to keep us up. That goes a long way with me. He would have set up the critical goal if Weghorst had grown 1 inch, Barnes dod it all right in that move, as with the penalty he scored. Leeds weren’t coming back to win in that eventuality, their fans would have been having kittens with 10 mins to go.

Barnes is a club legend and I’m happy he’s staying.

He’s a good plan B. We need some players to stay after it’s seemingly appears everyone else is leaving.

He's 33 in October, increasingly injury prone and been poor for about 2 years now.

If we'd stayed up then I'd have been unhappy, but given the clubs relegation and reported/alleged financial position, then keeping Barnes, Rodrigues and Cork too at sensible salaries - I'm presuming they were all contracted with a 'significant pay cut' on relegation? - seems a good, or at least acceptable move.

There is a massive gulf in class between the Prem and Championship, which anybody who watches enough of the Championship will already know. I think Barnes will be very useful, even as an impact sub. Some fans want a total clear-out and rebuild - that's fine if you have £100 million lying around. It has to be done in stages.

I assumed he'd be playing in the Championship next season but had hoped we'd had moved him on for a younger, fresher player.
The Weghorst replacement better be good because one striker slot/wage is taken up by Vydra who will be in the treatment room until January.

That leaves ????, JayRod & Barnes. And until we know who ??? is I only really have confidence in JayRod to consistently/stay fit.

With the way things are going we're going to need bodies and I for one feel Barnes will be a shrewd extension given his know how and experience in the Championship. That said I don't see him as a regular starter, more of an impact sub.

The quality of the championship must've really deteriorated, if you're expecting him to come on and turn a game in our favour

Can't wait for next season to see Westwoody, Stephensy, Lenno, Corky knocking balls forward for Barnsey and Jayo to chase.
Barnes has been crap for two years and should be long gone from Turf Moor for ages, as should many other of our money draining pensioners. I just hope it's true that Kompany is on his way with new, younger players and new ideas.

With the size of the squad reaching desperate levels by the looks of it, I am not hugely against keeping Barnes as a back up. We certainly need an Andre Gray type headline signing up front now, as if we didn't before though as we clearly haven't got that 20 goal a season striker we'll need to have a decent season. We wanted, and needed a rebuild, no time like the present....

Considering 3 of the first 4 you funnily re-named won't be here and the other is injured you may be disappointed

I never accepted we just played hoofball, but either way, Barnes is a very limited footballer, regardless of the style of play and not getting any younger. I think it's extremely optimistic to expect him to be a big hit in the championship, whether that's as a regular starter or an impact sub.

You mean the one when he never looked and didn't know the player was behind him. Never, ever a red card. Seems some want to label him now sadly.
The idea that Barnes went up for the ball thinking he was unchallenged is a bit far fetched

We need to make room for a rebuild, I'd have kept Barnes and let Rodriguez and Vydra go. Seems we're keeping all 3 and just clogging up the squad with useless shite.

We had 5 strikers last season who couldn't hit a barn door to save their life, Rodriguez Barnes and Vydra haven't shown any signs of scoring goals on a regular basis for years. A total reset and clearout was desperately needed in the forward areas.

Whilst there is some logic in rebuilding steadily, we are at a point where it probably needs a little more than a steady change. That can being kicked must be knackered by now.

I’m not entirely against Barnes for another year, but by heck, do I want something a bit exciting to look forward to. The same midfield and attack, as it stands, isn’t really going to set the pulse racing.

You would like to think we will get two good strikers in, as I would have thought VK would not feel that we are promotion contenders with Jay, Barnes and Vydra (hopefully by early part of 2023).Suspect the owners feel Barnes is a cheaper option than getting a new player in. Suspect if we had stayed in the PL Barnes would have left

It’s very good point, however I think Barnes would be the most sensible one to stay he’s got that experience of promotion and would be an alright option off the bench

You are likely right about Barnes, he wouldn't have played much in the PL.
We need to bring on Richardson, Costelloe and possibly Thompson.
Can't see us spending much on strkers.

Problem is we've already signed Rodriguez on a 2 year deal and offered Vydra a deal too. Further blocking Richardson' progress and blocking incomings we desperately need in the front line.

I’d expect VK sees playing youth players very differently and his path won’t be blocked. Didn’t you praise how well VK progressed youth at Anderlecht?

This is assuming he is our next manager.

I can’t tell you how pleased I am about this news.
He will get us promoted back to the Premier League.
Championship defences will be troubled already.
My second favourite player of all time ( after Leighton James).

At the end of the day this isn’t our problem it’s the new managers. He will pick the right player for him, be it a younger player or a more experienced one. If that’s Barnes so be it if it’s not good (imo). I wouldn’t have resigned him, but then I’d have got shut long ago, as I’ve never been much of a fan and don’t think his movement is good enough. I also don’t think his battling antics work the lower down you go where the defenders tend be much more up for a battle and less keen on clever movement (our cup failures often show this). But the facts are experience is important in the champ, Barnes does know the champ and ultimately we may not have any choice in the resigning. So relax folks and enjoy what’s to come, he might end up being sold before the end of the window or he might end up being a shrewd resigning.

Based on what exactly? Won't see him again until well after the World Cup and then he'll need the usual 'time' to get back on track. That'll be the best part of a season. We just can't seem to see off players that in general have been a flop.

It's a slight misconception, Barnes has spent a lot more seasons and games as a PL player than in the Championship.

I've certainly been a fan of Barnes pretty much throughout his stay with us, but I'd sadly reached the conclusion that whether PL or Championship, he really had reached the end at Burnley and freeing up his wages and everyone moving on seemed the best option. I understand from what CT has posted that the club has no choice and Ash has actually triggered the extra year as per contract, but I'm rather disappointed and hoped we'd have been in a position to shop for a younger model.

Barnes was by far my favourite player from the Dyche era, Mr 100 %. Obviously played to a style dictated by the manager.
I don't think he will be VK first choice striker but who knows, he may be capable of varying his game.
As for keeping our younger players out of the team that is clearly nonsense, if the younger players are better then they will have their chances.
As shown many times, if we have a lead he can hold / disrupt the game to our advantage.

I’d expect VK sees playing youth players very differently and his path won’t be blocked. Didn’t you praise how well VK progressed youth at Anderlecht?
Absolutely but I have zero confidence VK decided to keep Barnes, Rodriguez and Vydra.

I was hoping we'd bring in Zirkzee and Vrioni from Bayern and Juve for small fees. Vrioni was on absolute fire in the Austrian League, big future.

As has been suggested by CT, Barnes is an auto renewal as per his contract. Jay Rod, possibly, but I think he’ll be fine in the Champ, is technically decent and good to have for continuity in the squad. Vydra, shame he’s injured as I can see him suiting VK’s system, but we don’t know if he will definitely sign.
