Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
He would have scored the penalty against West Ham and buried the sitters at Villa and Watford.

He would have got sent off in the second minute against Everton and we would have gone on to lose the game 7-0 and ultimately been relegated.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Impossible to say-I can see both sides. However we may not have got the goal that drew with Man Utd, and we may not have beaten Brighton away.At the time I thought VW was a master stroke, towards the end I felt a Chris Wood, under Mike Jackson and us playing freer football, could have got us more goals and points. What has turned me against VW was his instant response to relegation, virtually immediately after the Newcastle game. He could have lobbied to go, behind the scene.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Impossible to prove or disprove, and let's not forget Wood missed plenty of sitters prior to his January move to Newcastle.
What can't be denied is that we didn't recruit well with his replacement.
Also worth mentioning we did actually win at Watford.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
So would Danny Ings, so would Paul Fletcher, so would Andy Lochead...sadly all had moved on, just like Chris Wood.

Pretty sure we'd of stayed up had Wood scored his chances prior to leaving too, they was a hell of a lot

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
I don’t know about Fletcher. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he didn’t look as mobile as he used to be.
Impossible to say whether Wood would have kept us up but I’d have been more confident with him up front rather than Weghorst.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
All if's, buts and maybe's.
Penalties we should have been given but we didn't get, marginal and disputable offside VAR decisions taking goals off of us, injuries, missed chances etc.
Wood had been good for us previously but last season wasn't the same but then the same can be said for all the strikers except Cornet. Wood didn't exactly pull up trees at Newcastle either.

What was the sitter at Watford?
We were rock bottom of the league with that lummox upfront, he was absolutely useless last season and a big reason we got relegated.

Sadly, Chris Wood had moved on LONG before he went to Newcastle.

Wood missed a sitter against Leeds hitting it straight at the keeper.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Not based on his form this season he wouldn't.
Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Can’t disagree with this too much.
A super signing, made a profit on him, but you can’t get away from the fact he was terrible in his final 6 months with us.
He wasn’t just out of form either, he was completely disinterested by the end of it. Right decision to sell.

I agree with the sentiment. Jay Rodriguez would and should have scored it too.Loyal Supporter wrote: ↑Sat Jun 18, 2022 4:27 pmHe would have scored the penalty against West Ham and buried the sitters at Villa and Watford.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Always makes me laugh when you get threads like this. If Wood was playing for us in those games, the passages of play would have been totally different and we wouldn’t have won that penalty or created that sitter.
Utterly pointless thread.

Was a big fan of Chris Wood, he did very well for us.
Let's not change history though, he was a massive part of the reason we went down

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Who said he'd even be in that position to score? it was Cornet who missed. Pretending results didn't improve once Wood left is hilarious, he was one of the main reasons we were so poor.

A player earning north of £50K pw and every game this season seemed like a chore to him.
That to me speaks volumes of him as a person.
"Comfort zone" indeed.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
A good number of people, whether wilfully or not, seem to be conveniently forgetting how godawful Wood was for us this season just gone.
Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
Wood had half a season, we were bottom of the league and absolutely awful.
When he left, results improved dramatically.
He absolutely wouldn't have kept us up, when he was here we were heading for a very very early relegation.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
That’s not accurate. When he left we were 16th in the league, above Leeds and 5 points above the drop zone. Our points per game reduced very slightly after Wood left.

The last league game he played was at Leeds. We were two points away from safety after that game

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
You’re quite right, my bad. I had looked at the table by game week but that table included the points we accrued in our 4 games in hand. Must admit it surprised me when I saw that!matttheclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 18, 2022 6:48 pmThe last league game he played was at Leeds. We were two points away from safety after that game
Turns out we won 0.65 points per game before selling Wood and 0.92 after selling him.

It’s irrelevant, Wood had a buyout clause, Newcastle met it so off he goes, nothing Burnley could do about it. Move on.

We’ll never know. Had he still been with us under Jackson I’m confident his mindset would have been rejuvenated and as such I think he would have made the difference and kept us up.

Re: Chris Wood Would Have Kept Us Up.
I explained in my earlier post. I was interested to see how much better/worse we were after Wood left so searched for the league table for match week 21, which is when he left. But the table displayed was engineered to show the league table after every team had played exactly 21 games - whereas we had only played 17 games at that stage of the season. So it wasn’t a true reflection of how the league table looked after the Leeds game.
We were 18th when he left, and we were 18th at the end of the season, although clearly our points per game increased quite significantly after he left. How much of that was down to Wood leaving we’ll never know.
